Solid Non-Biblical Proof That Jesus Existed
by White Dove ini have not heard of one single (non-shroud of turin) piece of evidence that jesus ever walked the earth.
please give me non-biblical and non-shroud of turin evidence that has been found that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the jesus of the bible walked the earth.. is that too much to ask?
the bible says it happened but gives no proof to support its statements.. the shroud of turin has not been established as proof of anything beyond a good wax and dye job.. .

In all seriousness the one thing that makes me believe that he existed is the year. Why would our years be based upon a man that never existed.
For the same reason that our weekdays are named after the gods Saturn, Sunna, Mani, Tyr, Woden, Thunor and Frige.
Would it help if you knew that the Gregorian calander wasn't introduced until the 1500s?

I'm also an atheist. I don't think your emprical study would prove much though, because I doubt many people know what their genuine iq is. I know I don't. Furthermore, you're not going to get an accurate cross sampling of iqs even if they were known, by asking people to post them publicly.
Right, if I had a low IQ I certainly wouldn't post it.
And of course you'd also have to take everyone entirely at their word.

Jesus mentioned it so it MUST be true... ?
by LtCmd.Lore insomething i don't get... when discussing the accuracy of the flood myth, and the story of jonah, bible believers, dubs for example, will claim that it must be true because jesus mentioned it.. here's what i don't get: isn't it possible that jesus was simply refferencing a fictional event that everyone around him would be familiar with?.
i do it all the time!
with my family i will make reference to events in star trek, mash, or whatever as if they actually occurred.. like: "hey i just met someone at work, he was just like frank burns.".

Something I don't get... when discussing the accuracy of the flood myth, and the story of Jonah, Bible believers, Dubs for example, will claim that it MUST be true because Jesus mentioned it.
Here's what I don't get: Isn't it possible that Jesus was simply refferencing a FICTIONAL event that everyone around him would be familiar with?
I do it all the time! With my family I will make reference to events in Star Trek, MASH, or whatever as if they actually occurred.
Like: "Hey I just met someone at work, he was JUST like Frank Burns."
I don't SPECIFICALLY STATE that Frank Burns was a fictional character, I talk about him as if he was real simply because it would be akward to constantly point out his non-existance:
Like: "Hey I just met someone at work, he was JUST like the non-existant character Frank Burns from the MASH fiction would have been if he were real. "
So if Jesus is talking about Jonah as if he REALY existed, isn't it possible that he simply assumed that his audience would realize that Jonah was a character from a story?
I just don't understand why his refferencing a story makes people think that he actually believed it occurred. -

M. C. Escher
Edit: Darn, it's supposed to be fictional...
Jareth, the Goblin King, because he used a crystal ball, AND because Labryinth always reminded me of an Escher illusion.

Evolutionists Creator "Deity" Under Scrutiny
by hooberus inbecause of the complexity of the creaton, everyone believes in a "creator".
creationists believe that this creator is the god of the bible.
like so many in this book, this argument is new.

What's the creationist response to the creation of the eye: "God did it" How? "Magic!"
That just seems like a notable difference to me.
Really?, and I though thought that the creationist response was something like this:
And where in those links does it describe the mechanism by which god created the eye?
I can't find any mention of just HOW god went about creating the eye.

"Natural selection" has even in effect became a "God did it" type phrase for evolutionists [i.e. "Natural selection did it !"], as it is invoked as "the explanation" for every complex thing found in nature,
Big difference, a theist will say "God did it, and we can't know how"
A scientist will say: "Natural selection did it, and here is the mechanism and step by step process in which it happened." Or at the very least: "Let's keep looking."
For example the formation of the eye, it's not like scientists just say: "Natural selection did it." But they detail the individual steps that took place and causes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUOpaFVgKPw

The greek word used in that particular passage is "Aetos" which means Eagle... or Vulture... http://www.searchgodsword.org/lex/grk/view.cgi?number=105
It's the same word used in this verse in Matthew: (24: 26-28) "So if anyone tells you, 'There he is, out in the desert,' do not go out; or, 'Here he is, in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. 27 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
And there is a very similar quote in John.
And lastly, there's the other use of this word in Revelation 4:7: And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.
That's the only four times that the word Aetos is used. It means Eagle, or Vulture, but never Angel.
The word for Angel that is used in the greek scriptures is 'Aggelo'.
