I'll bet you thought JWs would be a hardliner on gambling...
by ezekiel3 in...then you thought wrong.
richard wolf, an elder in the north salt lake congregation of the jehovah's witnesses, enjoys an occasional visit to the strip.. wolf joins other salt lake valley religious leaders in saying it's possible to stay true to one's principles in sin city ?
and be prepared to be vigilant.. "i think they need to protect their spiritual life," said the rev.

Going to Vegas may be a personal matter, but gambling, come on, we all know that is wrong in the eyes of the WTS. That elder has some explaining to do when he gets home.

My mother in law is visiting from across the States, but, she had to attend this "special talk!"
Isn't the only thing "special" about this talk is the fact it is usually given to everyone across the world the same weekend? I remember them getting so excited about the unity about how everyone will hear the same message at the same time.
I think it is funny as hell that I have a copy (thanks to this site) of this talk. My underage son, who sadly is still involved with his mother, was shocked that I found out what the "special announcement" was a couple of weeks ago before anyone from the hall knew. He still can't figure it out!

For those of you who are "sure" Michael Jackson is innocent. Would you.....
by avishai inwould you let your kids stay over at his house?
in his bed?

One problem I think the prosecution has here, is that by bringing the past accusers to the witness stand, may show that maybe he was a molester before, but it doesn't prove a damn thing about this kid on the current charges.
I am nervous to think that maybe Jackson is guilty, at least of past wrongdoings. However, I still think the current case lacks any proof so far, and the family are a bunch of greedy liars. That part, at least has been proven.
So far, most of the people taking the stand have been shown to not be very trustworthy. Many sides to each story.
That being said, I would not allow my children to be in any adults bed, I don't care who it is, except for me and my wife. Period.

New Light on Higher Education
by seeitallclearlynow inmy son made a point to tell me that they had what was to him a very interesting, different talk on the service meeting this week.
the presiding overseer gave a talk on the society's changed view of getting a college education.. he used the scripture which admonishes the reader to "acquire a heart of wisdom" and applied it to getting a 4 year college education for the sake of being able to support oneself at double the rate of pay with one's degree upon graduation.
this of course is only for the purpose of being able to then pioneer, only having to work a few days a week, thereby having the time for the field ministry.. such an annoying change - finally!

Maybe this is the first time it has been discussed from the stage, but I remember talk about this about 10 years ago, and how it might be ok to go to college, if only for the reason of being able to be paid more, and then work part time so you can devote more time to service.
Problem is, I would think that most employers that were excited about hiring a graduate, wants one to work full time. I don't know of too many people who run off to get a great education then just to work part time.

One of the signs of a cult is the specific language they use, special words that are used only by them.

It's funny. The things I participate in, are not bad things. Though, the WTS would like to say they are. I just live life. What happens, happens.

the real purpose of field service
by what_Truth? ini've been racking this around my brain for a minute now.
you've got people puttin in an average of 10 hours a month, giving away countless publications, and still only converting one or two families every 20 years or so.
this raises an obvious question, "if the door to door ministry doesn't bring in converts why do it?
-
freedom96
The real purpose covers two things: One, money from "contributions" and second, it keeps witnesses active in the religion. If there were not 5 meetings a week, and at least 10 hours of service in, they would lose many by just fading away. Being so active keeps it real, and so easy for others to keep track of.

The New World Translation and Honesty
by Little Bo Peep inafter having researched my beliefs of 45+ years, finding so much was really different than what the bible context really taught, i decided to "read" the bible for for the first time to see what it really was saying, taking off the "blinders" of the wt.
i began reading the greek scriptures first.
i used the new world translation, knowing if we were to ever reach our grown children, i would need to use that translation to prove anything.

I think it is very interesting to read the bible without WTS stuff telling you which verses to read, and then telling us what they mean.
I remember reading some in Revelations, and, when taken all together, it totally sounds like heaven is where we are going, not eternity on a paradise earth.
