historically, the bible is a secondary support for christians and jews.
i was raised roman catholic, and our tradition and practices included the bible, but it was not a key centerpiece of our faith.
the jewish side of my family likewise have a rich history of tradition and faith that is lived, and not pinned down to every word in the bible.
Amazing,
I just saw your comment on the last thread. I agree with what you are saying. I also believe that while Holy Spirit guided the early bible writers, but like you said, it is not the same as God holding someones hand and writing down his thoughts. Every man, including the bible writers will because they are human, write from the perspective of their own personal views and beliefs. So we have to take it for what it is worth. Like you said, not every coma, was added by God.

I posted these thoughts on the last thread that addressed this issue, but wanted to re-post here becasue I think it is important to have a balanced view of our Bible. And Jim, I am getting confused as to your point.
Jim,
That was a great point about the statement "all scripture is inspired" because most people do not understand that this applies to the Hebrew text. That is all they had at that time.
I do feel, like a lot of others that the Early Christians knew what they were talking about also. A lot of information they wrote was based on what they were taught by Jesus himself. But I can understand why people don't agree with everything too. Because there was a long time period between Christ's death and the writing down of the Greek scriptures. And also, it is all second or third hand information and different people have different writing styles. So I get ALL that, but still feel that the Greek scriptures are just a valuable as the Hebrew ones. And that the majority of the information was passed on fairly accurately. This is because of the NT complete harmony with the OT.
In Genesis we have the fall of man, kicked out of Eden, and the tree of life being taking away. This is just the beginning of the story in the Bible. All the texts in between that and Revelation shows how Jehovah planned on reconciling this event and restoring everything. All of it is really a story about Jesus you could say. Because HE is the key to it all.
In between Genesis and Revelation we have the lives of others of like faith and their experiences, and encouragement for the future, prophecies fulfilled to boost our faith, some very basic instructions for Christians and what the future will bring. Which eventually brings us back to man being ransomed and restored in his relationship with God, death done away with, the restoring of the earth back to an Eden, and the trees of life being available again. (Revelation 21:1-5, and chapter 22). So, you see it is one, whole, complete story. And you cannot have an accurate story with just the beginning and not the ending. But you have to take it, as you will. Each person needs to decide for himself what he believes.
I hope this post makes sense, I really don't see how or why anyone that claims to be Christian would try to prove in some way that the Greek scriptures are not really accurate? Didn't you not prove on the past post that the early church fathers (as you call them) were in agreement with the bible? Am I misunderstanding your point here?
[note: i am not promoting a religion, a church system, nor a set of beliefs.
i am merely reporting history as i find it.
the early, ante-nicene church fathers spent much time fighting heresies.

Hi tea for two,
I read that link before as well as all of Rusell's Studies in the Scriptures books. I still have them as a matter of fact because there is really good information in them. But as far as Russell's chronology, none of it has proven true. Because if it did, we should have been in the new order already. He said the complete overthrow of Satan and his system would be in 1914. We really will not know the date when Christ will come. We have signs given as a marker to know when he may be near but only Jehovah knows the date. Here is a scripture I'd like to share, it is something Christ said about his coming:
Acts 1:7
He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.
In Russell's book, he goes on to add to that above scripture by saying that Christ must have been told the date by Jehovah upond his ascending to heaven. And therefore reasons that Christ must have somehow communicated this to his true followers. He gives the date of this communication to be sometime in the 1800s and of course the followers were Russell's own bible student movement. While Christ may know know the date, it does not really matter. Because nowhere in scripture is their evidence to support what Russell believed about his group being the only chosen ones to know that infomation. His reading into that above text, which is clear and was told the the Apostles, is just merely conjecture. The Lord could not be any clearer than saying "it is not for you to know". If you read Matthew 24 and 25 you will see that the signs he gives were as markers only to know when the time is near. He even compares the signs to a fig tree and knowing when it will sprout and then says just like we see the evidence of the fig tree ready to sprout, we will likewise see evidence that Christ is ready to come. Nowhere does he say the evidence points to his already arriving. Russell taught he already arrive, invisibly and that is how he got his figures. Russell actually got them from the measurments of the Pyramids in Egypt, but that is another story.
Russell should have stopped after his first book the Divine Plan of the Ages. When he continued writting books, he began adding more and more of his own ideas into what was actually written in the bible. His biggest mistake was the chronologies and the invisible presence of Christ. These are not supported by scripture. And these ideas helped to spawn the evil empire we today know as the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.
from towerwatcher:the increasing degradation of women in the watchtower society.
the lifestyle of a woman as one of jehovah's witnesses is certainly not an easy job.
it is a well known fact that most of the work that takes place within the watchtower society contributing to its success, is due to the backbone of the watchtower which can be described as the women in the congregation.
Randy,
thanks for the information. Hope you are feeling well.
Jim,
Nice post. I agree with you. I used to be totally furious at how women in our congregation were treated and you know what, we WOMEN were out in field service much more often as the "brothers" and had to conduct our own service meetings and at one time held 95% of all the bible studies that were done. I remember one pioneer sister who had about 10 studies and asked several elders to take a few off her hands that were with men, they all turned her down because they were too busy to do it? Yeah right, more like not interested, not spiritual, or just lazy.
i urge you to disregard any personal opinions voiced by anyone, including myself regarding watchtower society publications.
but i would like to ask you to meditate on why god is so puny and ineffective.
he must be the epitome of helplessness.
Honesty,
I am only going to respond to one statement you made because frankly, most of it is complete RUBBISH.
You said "God finally had the courage to stand up to Satan?" Are you out of your cotton-picking mind? Enough said.

greendawn,
one last thing in reference to your last post, you are right the End will come suddenly. We were not given a day and time only signs to know we are close. The Man of Lawlessness is something that has to happen first but still we will not know the exact time. Christ clearly says we will not know because after all, what type of test of faithfulness is it if we know when our Master will arrive? we are to be faithful in paying attention to his words to know when he is near, but will NOT know the exact time. It is pointless to even speculate we just have to pay attention to what was written in the past to understand the events as they unfold. We will not totally understand everything UNTIL it has already passed.

I am back from the dentist.
greendawn,
I agree with you on the statue in Daniel. That is one thing I think, for the most part, the WT got right.
As far as the man of lawlessness, he has not been revealed yet so it is just conjecture as far as who it will be. This is not Satan and not merely a political or military man but something different because he will EXALT himself above every God and claim worship for himself. Note what Paul says here:
This has not happened yet. The temple I believe refers to God's temple in Jeruselem which would have to be re established prior to this day. That is why many believe the Jews have to all return to their land and take control again and rebuild this temple. Then, this man of lawlessness will set himself up in it and claim to be God. There are many scriptures which I will share at another time showing the Jews WILL rebuild the temple in Jeruselem and rededicate it to Jehovah.
In 2 Thesslonians 2:5-12 Paul explains some of the signs and miracles that this "Man" will perform to mislead the inhabitants of the earth to worship HIM instead of God. What he is describing is very similiar and possibly the same event mentioned in Revelation chapters 13 and 14, which speak about a beast (remember beast is a symbol) who sets up an image of worship and performs miracles to mislead all the nations into worshipping it. Thos who appose it (Christ's Saints) will be killed.
I am still in the process of really studying this "man of lawlessness" but if the WT is saying that the time is maybe days away, or a short time, and Paul says this man must be revealed prior, then who are they saying is the man of lawlessness and how to they explain these miracles and most of the earth being decieved? It obviously has not happend and we don't know who it is. I have some opinions on it but don't want to share publicly yet, but as I said, it is just speculation at this time. But clealy, the end is not days away because this prophecy has not been fulfilled yet and this revealing has not taken place.

there is something that MUST take place first. Paul spoke about this in 2Thessalonians 2:3.
Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for (that day will not come) until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.
The time for Christ to return is not UNTIL this man is revealed. this has not happened yet. The bible also calls him the Last Antichrist and apparently he is the cause for much of the world being led to worshipping him. I have to go out to dentist. Will give more scriptures when I come back.
