I find debating with JWs whether or not they are a cult tends to devolve into a pointless argument on semantics that lets the JW distract from what should be the main point i.e. that the Society try to exercise far too much control over individual JWs lives.

Latest convention brochure on,,, the Governing Body
by cedars ini've finally get my hands on a pdf of one of the two newly released brochures, this one entitled "who are doing jehovah's will today?".
here's a link so you can download your own copy.... http://www66.zippyshare.com/v/98881625/file.html.
predictably, the brochure is extremely vague on key topics.

There was a Watchtower study article a few months ago that criticised the nicene council for not being unanimous so they're clearly trying to create this impression that they are. When Ray first joined the GB it required unanimous voting and changed to the two-thirds majority in 1975/6, so it's possible that they've changed it back?
Cedars, I expect you will be just as unimpressed by the other brochure. The first chapter answers the question, What is the good news? with no mention of Jesus, who does not feature till a few chapters later, which seems a very significant omission for a 'Christian' group.

I knew Dave and Jean Algar well, I was friends with Jean's niece and nephew, and in her sister's book study group. Jean and her family were indeed wonderful, among the nicest Witnesses I know, and Dave definitely did not commit suicide!
I also knew Roy Renouf, he originally came from the same congregation as Jean Algar. Last I'd heard Roy's wife was very ill, I'm not sure how she is now? She was very into homeopathy as the cure for her ills. Roy and Jean Algar were also very close with LittleToe's parents and stayed with them many times. Slim, I wonder if that had an influence on Roy's talk?

FatherlessChild,
I'd heard that the drama has a bit of a Steve and Selma feel to it, obviously no physical abuse, but one of the storylines features a sister married to a brother who doesn't pay much attention to his wife and children, but the blame is put on her for having an acid tongue and ignoring the advice of the elders on how to improve her marriage. Does this sound right?
The GB seem to be pushing this theme of women being to blame for failed marriages...

August 22nd 1947 Awake page 9 - "Women's rights that are Worth-While"
Gulping like a drowning man Homer said there is"no fouler fiend than a woman when her mind is bent on evil." To Alexander Pope woman is "at heart a rake". To Thomas Dekker "woman is, at best, bad". Others going overboard on the other side have repeated the Hindu proverb "One should not strike a woman even with a flower". Sang the poet Herrick: "'Mongst all the rest of creatures, woman is best." But these extremes bear the same stamp of stupidity.

Disfellowshipping in action
by Zico ini have not been around here for a while and have mostly moved on from things related to the watchtower society, i'm pleased to see so many new people who have managed to escape.
i recently heard a story about a brother from my old congregation that i thought demonstrated what an awful religion we had, and decided to come back to share it.. sadly, this brother's mother had died, at the funeral, he was introducing a friend of his mother to various relatives but then came across one man he didn't recognise "sorry" he said to the man "i don't recognise you?
" thankfully, one of his non-believing relatives was on hand to help "that's your son!

Hi all,
I have not been around here for a while and have mostly moved on from things related to the Watchtower Society, I'm pleased to see so many new people who have managed to escape.
I recently heard a story about a brother from my old congregation that I thought demonstrated what an awful religion we had, and decided to come back to share it.
Sadly, this brother's mother had died, at the funeral, he was introducing a friend of his mother to various relatives but then came across one man he didn't recognise "sorry" he said to the man "I don't recognise you?" thankfully, one of his non-believing relatives was on hand to help "That's your son!" he shouted.
Yeah... his son was disfellowshipped about 15 years ago and as his parents have had nothing to do with him since, sticking completely to the Watchtower guidelines, they did not even recognise him when they saw him. I'm sure all the non-believing relatives were very impressed at his stong moral stand .
And that is why I quit... They are horrible.

One-third of Europeans blame the economic crisis on....
by BurnTheShips inda jooooooooooooooooos!.
hitler jr. must be waiting in the wings:.
the organization, which says its aim is "to stop the defamation of jewish people and secure justice and fair treatment to all," says the seven-nation survey confirms that anti-semitism remains strong.. the poll included interviews with 3,500 people - 500 each in austria, britain, france, germany, hungary, poland, spain.. it says that in spain, 74 percent of those asked say they feel it is "probably true" that jews hold too much sway over the global financial markets.

They should do the same poll in America, then we could compare the results.

Tank,
Your problems have nothing to do with religion, lots of non-JWs have happy relationships with JWs, but, just like in any "normal" relationship, both sides have to be willing to compromise in order to make it work. It's completely disrespectful and selfish to ask you to give up your beliefs and the customs in your life (i.e. celebrating christmas/birthdays, associating with worldly people etc...) when she'd refuse to give up any aspect of her life, and it also points to an obvious lack of love on her part.
If you give into her, become a JW and marry her, you WILL end up lonely, sad and resentful anyway. -

Prove That JWs Do Not Act As "True Christians"
by minimus ini have heard witnesses proudly say that are the only true religion following the bible.
they put down anyone else that claim to be christian, stating they are merely "counterfeit christians".
jehovah's witnesses believe they alone can rightfully be called "christian".

I've always thought that JWs act more like fanatical Jews than they do Christians.
You've always thought this?

More interesting is that I've heard of three teenagers in a Congregation near me that have left the Jehovah's Witnesses in the last few weeks because of an e-mail about the Society and the UN. I assume it's the NGO thing.
