It turned my stomach. I had to turn it off. Gibson focuses on Christ's physical suffering, that is the entire point of the movie. It's like a slow-motion snuff film, a horror movie.

Door to Door
by I-follow-the-narrow-path injust wondering... what do you think about the jw going door to door?
do you like it or dislike it?
my view is ( weather something is false or not) i think it is great someone shares what they love with someone else.

Look, here's the deal Elizabeth.
Going door to door to share your faith? I think that's fine. If the "spirit moves you," or whatever, and it's what you really want to do, more power to you. There are some Witnesses that really enjoy it and get into lots of good conversations all the time and brighten people's days. Honestly there are.
However, here is what I have a problem with:
* Making people keep track of how much time they spend doing it
* requireing them to report that time
* Sending that report with your name on it to a corporation in New York where it will be put into a file
* Making little kids do it
* Teaching that people who don't do it or who do it less somehow have less standing before God
* Treating those same people worse that other people who do it more
* Requiring people to pass out non-Bible literature instead of working from the Bible alone
* Having a whole heirarchical system of ranks based on it (publisher, auxiliary pioneer, pioneer, special pioneer, missionary)
* Saying that Jesus himself commanded his servants specifically to go door to door for all time, both back then and 2000 years later, and that Witnesses are simply following Jesus' command to go door to door
Does that make sense? It's not the door to door ministry itself that is bad, it's the way the Witnesses do it. -

I just got this
by fullofdoubtnow ini just took my mum home with her shopping, and she gave me a letter from a sister in my old kh.
the sister was one of my best friends for years, and one of the few people outside the elders who i told i was about to da, and why.
she knows i have moved recently, but doesn't know my new address, so she dropped this letter at my mums this morning:.

What would be best for her, in the long run, would be for her to get caught and ratted out to the elders for meeting with you. Then she could see a little of that "brotherly love," "justice," and "mercy" in action in the form of a judicial committee.

I'm not sure what this kind of thing is really supposed to prove. There are sickos everywhere, not just Witnesses. I think you'd have a hard time proving that the rate of pedophilia is any higher among Witnesses than outside.
What we need to do is keep an eye on this and see what happens. If he gets convicted but not DF'd, as blondie hypothesized, well that would be something to latch onto. -

How much persecution did you expect to come when you were a JW?
by JH indid you expect, that one day, you would be persecuted for being a jw?.
how bad did you expect it to get?
do jw's today still expect some kind of persecution to come because of their beliefs and actions?

I was repeatedly told that it would be worse than anything I could imagine. My biggest fear was that they'd do something to my kids, kill or torture them if I didn't sign a statement or something.
Actually that was one of the things that made me start to drift away. I knew that I would sign the statement rather than see my kid tortured or killed, and I didn't believe that God would hold it against me. -

What Used To Bother Your Conscience?
by minimus inmany jws were trained to have "sensitive" consciences.
very little ever bothered my conscience.
-
under_believer
I have always had a defective conscience. I suppose at times people were able to whip it up with a huge guilt trip, but mostly, I was simply worried about getting caught.

I _feel_ rational, so why am I still afraid?
by under_believer ini am at a point in my doubt and recovery process where i feel almost completely agnostic.
i am an empiricist; evidence required, please!

Anger over disfellowshipping
by jambon1 ini have now spoken with a couple of worldly people regarding the practise of disfellowshipping.
having been out of the org for a few months i now feel confident enough to expose the things that i knew were wrong.
d/f was one of the biggest issues i had.

Did your KH have a minimum skirt length, max heel height,
by White Waves inor other stupid rules for women?
ours were contingent on the spirituality of the sister and, if she was married or an elder's wife, etc.
then, she got more leeway.

We had a rule. Slits were okay, but the skirt was actually only as long as the slit. Like if you had a 35" skirt with a 5" slit it was actually a 30" skirt. I always thought that was stupid.
