Lurking has its faults

i've been researching prior postings gathering info but mostly reading because i've been 'out' for almost 14 years.

i still have numerous relatives that are still 'in' and when we get together those still in seem to get a sort of kick out of discussing super double secret goings on with 'new light' and changes in the cult.

it's been fun to be able to say, "oh you mean the change in length of the sunday talk?

Wife has disassociated, even being shunned by non-jw dad.

my wife has only been to one meeting in 13 months, and during this past year, she has been quite the little apostate.

she has been warning her work colleague, our neighbours, and anybody who would listen about the witnesses.

mrs iron has been quite a little star in that area.

Welcome! Its good both of you made it out together. You story is so similar to other experiences I have heard. Self righteous jws living off the beast and working besides while not paying taxes. I know a few pioneers doing that. Your father-in-law will get the love bombing once he starts leaning towards the wts and will not see the pressure until much later. Your wife has done the right thing! fts

Shepherding Calls

one thing that i really enjoyed taking part in was shepherding the flock.

i saw this as the perfect opportunity to really encourage others and help play a part in strengthening them.. however...... i started to despise giving shepherding calls.

the elders that i went with seemed to suck out any possible joy that both parties could receive from the visits.

Yes, it really depends upon the manner of the elder and their relationship to the person being visited. The elders who enjoyed the authority (most do) loved to pour guilt onto the member and emphasised the they will be checking on them. I was embarrassed when elders took loads of wt volumes and lead-out different articles in order to impress the member and believe it will be encouraging. fts

Meetings v Field Service

what do/did you see as more important?

there has been so much emphasis of late (for quite a while really) on meeting attendance.

if you miss a meeting, it's a big, big problem, yet if you miss field service for a day, or a week or even a fortnight nothing is said as long as you get that 1 hour in / month.

At the meetings there are more opportunities to keep control over the flock. Who is prepared and commenting during the program. Is the behavior before and after the meetings in line with wts. Not coming to the meetings means more work for the elders. Not going to the meetings get more attention, because the whole cong will notice. You can be going into FS without attending the FS meeting points. A brother not going in FS might be weak, a brother not attending the meetings might be questioning! First the hours go down, then the attendance drops and finally one more lost sheep! fts

Is the World Really More Violent Today?

a quick perusal of the bible reveals an extremely violent world.. any brief study of human history reveals acts of barbarism and bloody atrocities dispersed across millenia .. is the world of today perhaps safer than ever?.

I have not read all the posts, but watching the news may give that impression. But I think that's what makes the difference -the media. I wouldn't want to be living in the dark ages or in bible times. Entertainment has become more violent today in comparison to older movies where you wouldn't even see the one that was murdered. Then again today's movies are nothing like the Colosseum, where people were eaten alive!! fts

Confession, I can read a wt, listen to a jw talk and if I had a good reason I could even attend a meeting. It actually helps me better understand myself and how the manipulation worked so well. Seeing other children at the kh brings back memories of me, but yes, there are many fine places better to be then losing your childhood and youth, "the best years" to the wts. fts
