Thanks truthseeker. We do owe a huge debt of gratitude to Simon, but also to people like you for posting. Your account of the drama and their wacknut attempts at mind control just reaffirms my decision.

Sunday notes at the District Convention: Avoid an independent spirit!
by truthseeker infinally i am free.
i wandered outside the convention around mid-afternoon, returning for the concluding song, so i didn't get to hear "summary of the botchtower" nor the final talk (which gets all the seals clapping).. .
know that the kingdom of god is near .

What did you say to your teachers?
by Fleshybirdfodder inremember the first school year your parents passed the torch on to you and you had to talk to your teachers about opening exercises and holidays and such?
did you just give them the school brochure?
did you have a speech prepared?

Did you use to shun family members or friends?
by M.J. in.
have you since re-established contact with them?
i wonder if the act of shunning someone you love actually strengthens your resolve that you're following the "right" course.

Sad to say, yes. I was terrified of those evil people. Now I feel so ashamed.

Let cut JWs some slack on Christ's status. They might be right.
by Spectrum inthe alternative light i have received regarding early christianity has made me wonder whether jws have unwittingly got it right regarding the status of jesus.
a lot of strong criticism is made on this forum about jws sidelining of jesus in preference for jehovah the jewish god.
they have been equated with judaism because of their lack of inclusion of christ in their worship as well as their draconian code of expected conduct.

I agree Hellrider,
It's really a pandora's box. Christianity as an independant religion could not have existed without Paul's hellenistic interpretation (all sanctimonious "scales over the eyes" aside). Paul was the one who kept Jesus from being just another nuisance/social reformer/little prophet. Without Paul in all probability Christianity would just be assimilated into the annals of Judaic history. This is the dilemma that religions like the JW's find themselves in. How do we reconcile a schizophrenic monotheistic genocidal God with the teachings of Jesus? I maintain that if the JW's are right about anything, it is a complete fluke.

Absolute truths have been admitted....
by Shining One ini had to wade through a lot of muck to find anyone with any reasonable arguments in my last post.
most were just the usual personal attacks from the fringe and their flock of followers.
instead of dealing with them, i have decided to post one response to those who made some valid points.

Oh jeepers.... It's called utilitarianism (as in, I feel sympathy for a sick person because when I am sick I want to be taken care of. Or, "do unto others"...) If you need to put a face to the BIG question "WHY", that is fine. All I see is you scrambling to validate your belief that god exists, which I don't have a problem with; whatever gets you out of bed in morning... However, please be open and honest about your motives.

I started my "double life" in the second grade. My parents had the obligatory chat with the teacher about "my" beliefs but she was nearing retirement and somewhat clueless (or so I remember) so she never took the initiative (I suppose that was my 7 year old responsibility) of telling me what I should or should not participate in. I did the whole gamut of arts and crafts... halloween, christmas, easter... you name it. I just knew I couldn't take it home to my parents so I stuffed it in one of the school yard garbage bins. I thought I'd got away cleanly but one of the conscientious kids in my class noticed all my work in the garbage and brought it to the attention of the teacher. How does a seven year old explain that to his classmates or a teacher? "I threw out all my drawings and work because....." I honestly can't remember what I said. Perhaps I've blocked it. I'm sure they thought I was odd....
