It's a shame your mom can't take things like this in stride. If your experience was an isolated incident, she should have been a little more forgiving.
When my son was in college (and of legal drinking age), one weekend when he came home and stayed up late after my husband and I had gone to bed. Unbeknownst to us, he started nipping at the hazelnut schnapps bottle I kept for baking. The next morning, he came down very late with a dreadful headache and upset stomach and an empty schnapps bottle. We tsked tsked him for a minute, then laughed. Kids will do this; sometimes it's even a good lesson for them.

What Did You LOVE About Being a Jehovah's Witness?
by Seeker4 inok. minimus had his 'what did you hate about being a jw' thread, so i want to take a different tack on this.
i'll even start it.
i loved some of the get-togethers we had.

I loved when the final prayer was said at the meeting because it meant I could finally go home.
I loved when bad weather meant I didn't have to go out in FS.
I loved when I knocked on someone's door in FS and no one was home.
But the thing I loved most of all -- LEAVING JWS FOR GOOD -

Mennonite article on JW site
by undercover inthe article about the mennonite family becoming jws is on the main page of the wts website.. http://watchtower.org/library/w/2005/9/1/article_01.htm.
in the course of the article they give a little history of the sect but the juicy parts that would interest most of us here in "apostate land" are in the second half of the article.
some snippets:.

If that story is true, I'll eat my hat. I live in Pennsylvania Mennonite country and know a little about the Mennonites. The day a group of them stands outside the local KH and asks to come in for bible study is the day I'll eat my other hat.

Interesting developments
by SickofLies inhello everyone, remember me?
for those of you who are new i produced a documentary on disfellowshiping in the kingdom hall.
the interesting thing is that i was df'ed not for committing and 'gross' sin, as you might think, but i was df'ed of litterally asking to many questions.. anyway, i've heard the following news co's and do's in the us are talking about my case, i have been barred from ever entering a kingdom hall again (police notice was enfocred on me) and for some reason i have been getting calls from elders from the hall i was booted out of lately (i have not returned or answered the calls as of yet).

Hi, Sick of Lies. You took your break from this site just after I starting lurking on it. Your video was one of the first things I saw. That elder with his sick, phony smile gave me chills. If you decide to follow up on any of the elders' phone calls, bring your recorder!

Uninvited--A Wonderful "Witness"

Merry,
Again, my condolences on your mother's death and now the heartless treatment of you by the JWs. I've already decided not to attend my JW parents' funerals when they happen. Your story and others' here have convinced me that putting myself at their mercy at such a terrible personal time will only increase my pain. I respect your decision to get away from them and commemorate your mother's life in your own way.
Your uncle sounds like a champ! It must be very difficult for decent JWs like him to reconcile their own loving natures with the WTS's soulless policies. -

Have you heard this one-the end is very close, maybe 2 years
by sspo inmy good witness friend was trying to encourage me spiritually and this is what's being speculated among the witnesses.
how long was adam alone before eve was created, well at least 31 years so far.
1975 was the end of 6000 years of man's existence.. from 1975 to 2006, it is 31 years.. when was jesus ministry over?

sspo:
***1975 was the end of 6000 years of man's existence. From 1975 to 2006, it is 31 years.***
So that means the 1000-year creative "day" is actually 1031 years long? Then how do we know if the other 1000-year creative "days" weren't more than a thousand years, which would throw off their calculations even more? And if the 1000-year "days" aren't a thousand years, would that mean the scripture is either wrong or referring to something else?
Blondie:
***1935 plus 70 years = 2005 = the end came last year...............invisibly***
That's the solution! We should have realized that whenever something doesn't happen on the WT timetable, they make it happen invisibly! Jesus didn't arrive in 1914, so he arrived ..... invisibly! If the big-A has already invisibly happened, then we apostates must be invisibly dead along with the rest of the world's population. And the surviving JWs' health is already improving, invisibly. The entire earth is being transformed into an invisible paradise. Invisible lions are munching on invisible straw right now.
Wow, the JWs were right all along. -

JWs can celebrate the new moon..............the bible says so.
by vitty ini spent an evening in a hotel last week and while waiting for dh to get ready, i found a gidion bible in the draw, so started flicking through it.
i was reading colossians, when i came across a scripture i hadnt noticed before.
in chapter 2 v 16. it really stunned me.

It's always made sense to me to celebrate the seasons and beauties of the earth. Unlike elusive, invisible deities, nature's amazing variety is right in front of our eyes. Japanese holidays often revolve around nature -- cherry blossom viewing, spring equinox, star festival, ocean day, etc.
Because I'm not christian, celebrating Christmas without its religious elements is for me a celebration of winter, of family, and the return of the sun after the winter solstice. And it's every bit as warm and precious a holiday to me and my family as it is to christians.
Enjoy your new moon celebrations. -

Is a "Pure" religion an oxymoron?
by free2beme init seems that everyone i know who claims to be in the right religion, has the idea that their religion is some how more pure or perfect then all others.
whether is a christian faith as a whole, or an individual sect of christianity.
yet, no one seems to be willing to see that their religion, has, does and will do the same.

Did you forget how to make friends?
by AK - Jeff insimon raised an interesting point in my last thread about so many leaving the forum - his point was that the ideal situation would be to move on and leave forums like this one in the past at some point.
agreed.
seems as though cult victims in general - and witnesses in particular - have been taught to divest oneself of the social tangibles needed to make friends and move on.

***How does one divest from the principle indoctrination that makes this rudimentary human skill so hard to develop later in life, post-cult.***
ExJWs have several barriers to push aside before they can trust again. They must work through their anger at the JWs' betrayal of their trust, and they must overcome their ingrained perception of the outside world as evil. That's a big double-whammy when trying to make new friends.
I don't think you can divest JW indoctrination like taking off a coat. Time and an open mind are the only cure.
