Not about masturbation: How do you love yourself?
by serendipity inas a jw, i knew the scripture said that "you must love your neighbor as yourself" and struggled with the concept of "loving one self.
" or really, what were appropriate ways to love yourself and to what degree.
i thought on the one hand, the wts was not a 'feel good' religion, and certainly didn't encourage self-actualization, self-esteem or anything approaching self love.

To lovelylil: I've been reading your posts here for a few weeks, and I must say you are one sweet lady. If the JWs had not scoured all religious feeling out of me, I would want to be a Christian like you. Keep up the good work.

The tale of two(x2) sisters and the Around the World Tour
by james_woods inin oklahoma city, back in the buildup to 1975 (lets say about 68 or 69), there were four very special older jw ladies who had a great influence on my life.
i would like to say something nice about each one.. starting with lois & marie...(lois vandoren & marie salyer for those old enough to remember).
lois & marie were probably the most kind and faithful jw ladies i have ever met.

It's great to have some good memories among all the bad memories most have of the JWs. I also knew a few who were genuinely kind, funny, open-hearted people. But I often felt their compassion was wasted by being part of a loveless org. How much good they could have accomplished in the real world!

"If you take the Christian Bible and put it out in the wind and the rain, soon the paper on which the words are printed will disintegrate and the words will be gone. Our bible IS the wind and the rain."

Lots of Bethelites Not Happy With Downsizing
by Seeker4 ini had a long conversation last night with an old jw friend whose sister and brother-in-law are bethelites since the 1970s.
she is an artist, and he runs a small but important department there.. we were talking about the bethel downsizing (my friend was well aware of it), and i told him i figured his sister and b-i-l would be safe due to the fact that they are now in their 60s and have something close to 4 decades seniority.
but he said no, that they were worried that they would be asked to leave as well, sent into the circuit work or as special pioneers sent where the "need is great.".

This downsizing is simply the latest and largest group to be kicked out of Bethel when the gb decides it's inconvenient to let them stay. Here are 2 excerpts from Barbara Grizzuti Harrison's book, Visions of Glory, which describes a few of these "failures of charity" that occurred at Bethel in the 1950s.
"A young woman who had been a full-time field worker (a 'pioneer') came to Bethel headquarters after her husband had died of a sudden heart attack and her son had, accidentally it was supposed, hanged himself. She was perpetually smiling, sweet, singularly unassertive woman who seemed to have put her personal tragedies behind her. One day, her glasses slipped off and were smashed in the press. She began to howl and scream and cry that immemorial cry--'Why me?'... She was given a Greyhound ticket to her parents' home in the Northwest. (I do not know what has become of her.)"
And another example:
"An old man, who had been at Bethel for thirty years, grew senile. His senility took the form of his muttering obscenities at the dining-room table. He was given two 'warnings,' which his hardened arteries obviously couldn't assimilate, and then ordered to leave. He had no resources, financial or emotional. He was last seen begging in downtown Brooklyn."
The only surprise about this latest downsizing is the large number of Bethelites being tossed out. -

JWD forum is another battleground for your souls.

constant shifting sands, one minute the grains are over here then we seek to blow them over there.

The give-and-take nature of this site could not be more different from JW thinking. For the past 6 weeks, I've been enjoying the comments from everybody -- exJWs, JWs, born-agains, atheists, agnostics, don't-give-a-damns, weirdos. The kind of freedom that exists here would never be tolerated by the org. Even the most virulent comments about JW and Christian posters is always moderated with humor and humanity. This is the real world, the "out there" that JWs are afraid to face. All of you guys are great.
