the dreamer dreaming: "with the advent of monotheism, some notable improvements may be the lumping of all fears together into just the fear of God...which may have helped the human race quite a bit...."
If lumping all fears into just the fear of God had resulted in increased love for our fellow humans, then yes, that would be an improvement. But that's not what happened. Belief in one god to the exclusion of all others breeds intolerence and hate, as is abundantly evident in fundie religions, JWs, extreme Muslim groups, and in mainstream Christian religious history. With the exception of the creation of beautiful works of art, architecture, and music, monotheism in practice has fallen far short of its claims of moral superiority.

Would a Father really destroy His children for disobeying and arrogance?
by Judas I. ineven go so far as to torment them forever?
how could that ever be justified?.
would that be also admitting failure as a father by resorting to that?.

Do you really need a Bible thunked on your head to know murder, hate, and violence are wrong? Four of the seven Christian cardinal virtues (prudence, temperance, fortitude, and justice) are derived from the ethics of the pagan Greeks, as are many current laws and judicial systems of the Western world.
"What you do not want others to do to you, do not do to others." - Chinese sage Confucius [a pagan]. -

"Is there no 'absolute truth'? Do you want to live that one out? You then have no moral basis for any law in any society."
If by "absolute truth" you mean absolute as in "coming from an absolute god," then it should follow that religions and nations that have monotheistic traditions would have morally superior histories than pagan religions, who have to muddle their relativistic way through.
I think it would be hard to argue that possessing "absolute" monotheistic truth and moral values reigned in the worst excesses of their adherents' actions, from the OT genocides, the Crusades, the Inquisition up to modern-day religious terrorists.
Belief that God supposedly chiseled "thou shalt not kill" on a rock doesn't seem to have had much effect on slowing down the killing. Why is that?

Bethel Downsizing - Management Discussions
by core in.
the spin on downsizing is apparently "go out into the field" yet when the gb initially considered this it must have been presented as a practical problem - too much surplus hr capacity/ too expensive to maintain - or whatever and yet they turned it into a positive matter by stressing the return to the field - all those in such discussions are clearly able to deceive themselves as much as they try and deceive the "flock" - what do you think - did a discussion on a practical problem have to have a positive outcome and how did they twist their minds so as to sell it as such - for years they begged people to stay in bethel service (make it your home for life) and now they cast them out into the world with the thin veneer of "speedin g up the preaching work .. etc".
all those at the top must have been involved in turning this huge embarrasment (jehovah will provide etc) into a positive spin - they should try out for a marketing award "downsizing - the only way to grow!

Joe Grunday said, "I realise, of course, that for all its alleged internationalism, JWs is still very much a US-based religion."
You got that right. I always loved those illustrations of JWs in "paradise" -- a bunch of people of different races and nationalities all crowding around what looked like a midwestern (Iowa maybe?) barbecue. -

I left so gradually it was virtually painless. The first to go was the Tues. book study. Then the Thurs. meetings--so boring, so glad to get rid of them. Then the Watchtower study; I'd stay for the talk but leave right afterward. That went on for a few months; then I dropped the talk as well. Never missed 'em and they didn't miss me.
