Anybody know Wally Gobitis?
by parakeet inwhen i was a kid (long time ago), wally gobitis used to visit our cong occasionally.
for those not familiar with gobitis, here's a quick jw history refresher: .
back in the late 1930s gobitis, a jw, was sued by the minersville board of education when his children refused to salute the flag in school.

For Sh***ing One - Do I represent Christ Properly?
by jgnat inme: s***ing one: where have i complained about scripture?
he: then you have now changed your mind and believe that all scripture is inspired?
me: as others have already helpfully pointed out, questioning and complaining are completely different.

jgnat,
Don't get yourself worked up over what the Scintillating One says. He's lucid only five percent of the time, if that. -

***Man, though perfect, was not as perfect as Jehovah.....***
Isn't that just a classic line? As if there are degrees of perfection. Reminds me of the line in Orwell's "Animal Farm" that the pigs used to justify their oppression: "Some animals are more equal than others." -

Return Offers to Witnesses at the Door!
by Bookey ini want to hear as many ideas as possible for items/gifts of mercy to hand out to witnesses when they knock at the front door.
to be fair, in exchange for their wonderful literature that is the "truth", i think it fair to return the favor with some "truth" items of our own as a gift to them!
any suggestions?

I said this in another thread: Print out a few pages from "the best of" on this forum. Ask to trade your printouts for their current offering of "truth du jour," promise to read theirs if they read yours, and ask them to come back for a discussion about what you've both read.
This will accomplish two things: 1. They may actually read and think about what you've given them (not likely, but who knows); 2. No JW will ever darken your door again. -

Back in the late 1930s Gobitis, a JW, was sued by the Minersville Board of Education when his children refused to salute the flag in school. In 1940, the case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, who ruled 8-1 against Gobitis. This ruling was overturned in 1943 in the case of W. Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette.
Sometime in the 1950s or 60s, I believe, Gobitis moved to Arizona. When he came back to visit our cong, he was treated as a minor celebrity. I didn't know him well, but he seemed like a nice guy.
I was wondering if anyone here knew him or his family and could tell me more about them outside of what is known in the official record. -

Like everything else in life, there's no clear-cut right or wrong, black or white answer to this issue. As medical advances prolong life, sometimes painfully prolonging it, I think there will be the need for some kind of legal determination to specify when and how a patient can choose to die. Unlike animals, human beings sometimes desire death when what they really need is proper medical or psychiatric care to get them through a rough patch. Patients, the medical profession, and the government will have to work out some resolution to this problem.

Re: What do you do for a living?
by MARTINLEYSHON inas many of you are aware being brought up in the organisation, there was a general directive from the wt that secular education was good, but not encouraged as far as university and further education was concerned.
many witnesses left school in the 70s with no formal qualifications.
my question therefore is 2 fold.. 1. what would you have liked to become as far as your career is concerned?.

Don't you know that keeping food past its expiration date is a disfellowshipping offense? Once those tomatoes passed that exp. date, they became apostate tomatoes, and keeping them makes you apostate too. (Doesn't make any less sense than getting kicked out for smoking, growing a beard, etc., etc., etc.)
