They fear the psychiatrist will see (and rightly so) that the JW's problems are often being caused or exacerbated by their beliefs. What JWs don't understand is that psychiatrists are not interested in forcing them to give up their beliefs. Psychiatrists are simply trying to help the patient overcome their emotional problems.

You might be a JW if you pray joyfully every day for god to destroy your nonbelieving family and neighbors and the rest of the world's 6 billion nonbelievers.

***people that have lost someone to death, had a family member with a serious illness, had a serious illness themselves, lost a job, gone through marriage problems even divorce, had family problems, people who are stressed or lonely, people going through changes like leaving school, people with low self-esteem***
As blondie pointed out, almost everyone faces these situations at one time or another. I think two additional personality traits are needed for susceptibility to JW belief -- a strong sense of justice and a strong desire for order. Adults who attracted to JWs want the world to make sense. They believe the good should always be rewarded and the evil always punished. They cannot tolerate the thought that the world is not always fair. For them, reality is unacceptable. There "must" be something better.
The JWs offer a plausible-sounding reason for the world's ambiguousness and a hope that god will correct all injustices quickly. They are good at finding people who NEED to believe that there must be a solution for the world's wrongs.
The emotional reward for these beliefs (security, certainty, hope) wraps the convert in a self-sufficient cocoon. They don't want to examine the religion's beliefs closely because that would tear apart their cocoons and leave them outside without hope in a seemingly cold world.
I believe emotional security so important to them that they become unable to defend their beliefs logically and they refuse to acknowledge the evil inside the organization. Emotionally, they can't afford to lose the only thing that allows them to make sense of everything. -

***My brother went on and on about why we cannot rely on psychology/therapists because they are constantly changing their ideas/tecniques. He spent a whole lot of time bad mouthing psychology***
sandy, this answers a question I've had for a while--whether the WTS has changed at all regarding its stance on psychiatric treatment. Like everything else that has the potential for litigation, they say "go ahead" with one side of their mouth and "you'll be sorry if you do" on the other side.
I know a long-time JW whose wife, after a long, miserable struggle with mental illness, now lives 24/7 in almost total darkness on the second floor of their house. The windows are covered with aluminum foil, and she lives in constant fear, believing everything she breathes, drinks or eats is poisonous.
Yet this brother has never, not even in earlier years when she might have been helped, taken her for psychiatric evaluation and treatment. Now they're both miserable, she from the illness, he from the onerous task of caring for her.
Because of the WTS and Jehovah's "loving arrangement," they are trapped in a living hell.
The songs may be pretty (I never thought so), but everything said in that talk was pure poison. -

Death and Ex-JWs
by Mysterious init's a long weekend so it's time to bring out a big issue, death.
i know it's something most ex-jws (at least for a while) struggle with when they exit the organization.
i think a weird moment for me was yesterday when my boyfriend's parents called.

***he said he couldn't cry for something that had lived a good life and fulfilled it's lifespan, it was only natural for the old to die.***
I wish I could be that dispassionate about death. I'm a basket case whenever a pet or someone close to me dies, but I don't think the JWs have anything to do with that. I've been reconciled (somewhat) to the idea of death for many years now. My pity goes to sick, elderly JWs, who believed all their lives that they wouldn't die. It must be a terrible thing to have to face death for the first time at an advanced age. -

What an awful day, Hambeak. Would it be possible for you to take a leave of absence from your job until you get through the worst of the chemo? Sounds like you need time to rest and give your body a chance to heal.

exb, you're not looking for a woman; you're looking for a bimbo. Save some money, fly to Nevada, and spend a few days with a hooker. That seems like the kind of relationship you're looking for anyway.
If and when you ever grow up, you'll be able to choose a woman by using your brain instead of your ****. -

***As a former Jehovah's Witness have you been enticed to consider another religion***
The only influence JWs had on my beliefs afterwards was to toss out the bible and god. I became an atheist and remained one for many years.
In the past few years, I've been doing some intensive reading about other religions, so my current beliefs are a derivation of Buddhism, pagan/wicca, and atheism. -

The Clergy vs. Jehovah's Witnesses?
by Outaservice inafter i left the organization, one of the things that surprised me the most, was the clergy of christendom and their view of jehovah's witnesses.
i thought as a jw, we were the 'center' of their attention, and they not only hated us, but were afraid of all the things we published about them.. nothing could have been farther from the truth!
most ministers hardly knew anything about witnesses.

Some of the JW in-your-face preaching tactics in the early days were designed to provoke antagonism, however mild. That's the only way they could claim they were being persecuted and that god was on their side. "Persecution" they can handle. What they can't handle is being ignored.
