Attending meetings while on Holidays
by Nosferatu inso how many of you actually attended meetings when you went away on holidays?
remember, you shouldn't take a holiday from jehovah!.
when me and my mother went to visit my uncle in 1987, we attended every stinkin' meeting, including a congregation baseball game.

I guess I'll have to go a bit against the grain on this one. Many years ago I went to Cancun and visited a local congregation. It was fun mixing with the locals. One of them was fluent in English, a good thing since I wasn't fluent in Spanish at that time. He and his wife helped me to arrange a day trip with another brother who was a taxi driver to Chichen Itza. I had lots of fun with them.
A few years after that I went to Japan. I got in touch with the local congregation. I had a blast. I was always being invited over to someone's home for dinner. If only I could speak Japanese! Still, I have very fond memories of that trip.
Now, of course, I can understand attending meetings in the United States while on vacation is the equivalent of going to the dentist.

I used to. But now I live in Puerto Rico. No federal taxes for residents. Yes, I've watched the Freedom to Fascism documentary. No matter whether you are technically within the law or not, they can make life difficult for you if they ever decide to come after you. You'd better keep a low profile. Best of luck.

meditation: your thoughts? :)
by DeusMauzzim inthe wtbts always has meditation as a topic on conventions.
they always state that eastern meditation makes the mind "blank", so this is a no no.. of course we know that it is actually the convention that makes the mind blank :).
so what are your thoughts on meditation now?.

Biblical chronology
by Anti-Christ ini found an article on internet infidels about the 430 years the israelites spent in egypt, very interesting.
i would like to have some of your comments on it.. .
future articles will examine in detail specific examples of textual errors in the bible, so for now i will review only briefly a few of the ones that cast serious doubts on the doctrine of bible inerrancy.

Not only is the chronology whacked, but also the fact that a mere 70 people could multiply to over a million in the space of four generations is ludicrous.
The first generation, the offspring of Jacob's sons that came into Egypt, numbered 55 males. If each one married and had five sons on average, besides daughters, the second generation would number 275 males. The third generation would number 1375 males. Finally, the fourth generation, that of Moses and the Exodus, would number a mere 6875 males, somewhat short of the 600,000 able bodied men, besides women and children, mentioned in the Biblical record, a figure that didn't even include the 22,000 Levite males from a month old and up.

Does evolution destroy the fall and by consequence sin and the cross?
by Qcmbr inif we postulate that creation in the six day magic rendition of genesis is tosh and replace it with evolution how does that effect the concept of the fall?

Evolution, the scientific theory that best explains the common lineage of living things on this planet, is just one way to prove that the creation account of Genesis is a myth.
Archeology is another way to prove that the creation account of Genesis is a myth.
The textual examination of the Bible using the Documentary Hypothesis, aided by modern archeology, shows that multiple authors with differing agendas had a hand in the writing of Genesis, thereby discounting the belief that it was a product of divine inspiration.
Granted that there may be some history found within its pages but only after the account of the Tower of Babel. Grave internal inconsistencies exist, and it must be noted that modern standards of historical accuracy were unknown to Biblical writers. They were story tellers.
All that brings me to my point: If one doesn't have to believe in sin and redemption, why would one want to? Science, while not a religion, is a liberation from darkness and superstition. Further, the belief that we somehow need these myths to "keep people in line" doesn't speak well for anyone who thinks that way in my opinion. I've known atheists, agnostics, and members of non-Christian religions who were good people, as good and as loving as any good and loving Christian. This is how normal humans act, regardless of culture.

As usual, the Watchtower is full of "it" when it comes to their distorted view on meditation. Real meditation has nothing to do with "meditating on God's Word and the publications" as they like to say. It is a mental exercise that helps improve one's mental focus and awareness. Want to meditate? Try this:
Sit upright comfortably in a chair preferably in a quiet room with no distractions. Breath in and out calmly. Focus on your breathing by counting each breath. Count 1 to 10 and repeat for ten minutes. If you become aware that your thoughts have wandered, gently bring your awareness back to your breath and your mental counting.
That's all it takes for a simple meditation. Of course, there are many variations. One can meditate while walking, for instance. One can repeat a mantra during meditation. There are books that go into lots of detail and also talk about the physical health benefits to be enjoyed by those who regularly practice meditation, such as lowering blood pressure. One can tie it in to one's spirituality, but it is not necessary if one doesn't feel so inclined.
Take that Watchtower writing department!

Over the past decade, I went through periods when I missed meetings and barely went in service. I pretty much thought it was the truth, though I had my doubts. I got extremely bored with the meetings. It was the same ol' leftovers all the time.
There never seemed to be any real community spirit in the congregations outside the usual arrangements. Certainly, a sense of community was never really encouraged by the organization. It's strange. I actually envied the brothers in poor countries because they seemed to pull together as a community because of their difficulties.
I realize now that it is just a matter of cultural differences. For all the Watchtower talk about "putting on new personalities," they are just as much a part of this "world" as any other group out there.
The Watchtower is a child of the industrial revolution and a product of empire culture. As such it is about control and business. It has taken me a long time to be able to look outside the box, and the internet was the key for me to do it.
Thanks to Talk Origins and Timothy Campbell's Beyond Jehovah's Witnesses website, which appears to be discontinued now, I got started on the road to recovery. I read Ray Franz's Crisis of Conscience. I finally saw the Bible for what it really is after reading Who Wrote the Bible? by Richard Friedman. And, of course, I got support from JWD.
