i hadn't been aware of national governments being interested in such things, but here's a news item today from 'downunder' showing what the australian federal government is concerned about.

I agree with Simon.
There is way too much pressure of a sexual nature on girls of inappropriate ages.
I applaude the government for speaking up. The more people who speak up, the more 'back-up' parents have when trying to impose reasonable bounds on their kids.
Schools too, can provide back-up by just banning certain types of clothing. The good ones do.
i have small children.
i was raised a witness, so i never celebrated holidays.
now, i don't go to meetings, don't agree that the watchtower is jehovahs sole channel of communication.
We are passing through the darkest time of the year (in the northern hemisphere).
What a wonderful time to fill our homes with lights and tokens of festivity and faith.
This darkness too, shall pass. We know and we believe that sunlight and spring, and summer will come again. Despite all the evidence that surrounds us.
What a wonderful thing that, as we celebrate the birth of Christ, it coincides with the lengthening of days.
Used to be a traditional (gasp - "pagan") time of celebrating the Sun? Perhaps.
Is it not so very right that we should now celebrate the light of OUR lives on that occasion? Not just sunlight, but the birth of our spiritual lives. The birth of Christ.
It's not all hokey commercialism. (tho that's definitely out there)
There is something more to this.
Perhaps you can find some music which really touches you.
Give yourself some time. But try to see the real meaning of Christmas.
Yes, it's WONDERFUL fun.
But so much more, too.
Whatever you decide to do, save little momentos from the occasion. As a parent, you and your children will want to look back on these one day.

i am interested in hearing comments from you regarding whether you feel the child abuse problem is greater within the jw 'religion' moreso than other religions or identifiable groups.. i know some have made the comment that it is and others say there is no difference.

Yes, greater.
Because they are a 'secret society'. Because they hold to a strict, unforgiving and ridiculous 'standard' of behavior. Because they openly encourage or allow the battering of small children.
Because they are not outraged at what has happened or been in the media this year. Because these problems are at the top and all things come from the top, down.
Because they readily put themselves 'outside the law' (they would say 'above' the law) in many things. They have no sense of accountability or responsibility to their fellow man.
Because they are very willing to have their sex lives intruded upon in unhealthy ways. Because they are willing to have their 'natural instincts' of love and nurturing be usurped and overriden by the rules of people they don't even know.
Because they are very concerned with their image. Because, as a religion, it is very out of touch with God.
Because they parade their innocence and superiority.
I could go on...(maybe I will)....

Probably the one I just read on WT roots (Blackguard) which lays out how the WT was formed as part of an effort to destroy Christianity.

something that has been alarming to my jw family is the amount of teens ("young ones") that have bailed out of the organisation, never to return.. they use the excuse, as would most jw's that "satan is getting them - he knows young ones are vulnerable.".
if you want my opinion, young people are getting far more educated - they are becoming far more broad minded than they were say 10 or 20 years ago.
because of the slow yet sturdy slackening of the "no college" rule, many more young jw's are attending university or college than ever before, and with further education comes more knowledge, more interaction with reasonable and intelligent conversations with educated people and most importantly -use of the internet ("satans latest tool, as put by a jw i talked to recently).
I think the amount of assistance, guidance, social interaction and nurturing is JUST PERFECT as is - IF their main goal is population control.
How better to produce a mass of f'd up, lonely, family-less teens whom, if they do marry, probably won't stay that way for long. Or at least not long enough to have many (if any) kids of their own.

But life is not over.
Everybody has SOMETHING they have to deal with or 'get over'. And many, many people have something really, really enormous to cope with and to grow past.
Knowing where you are is a very good place to start.

Translated version? (Not being impatient, just asking)
having now read some other people's accounts of their life with jw, i thought i would be able to share my recollections, albeit blurred with the passage of time.. i wasn't always a jw, i celebrated xmas at the age of 4 in 1975. in 1976 my mum had joined the truth so we didn't have xmas that year.
mind you it didn't really seem that big a deal, my parents had divorced when i was 3 and mum didn't have wads of cash to buy presents with anyway.
we (mum, my brother and i) found shelter and comfort in a new "extended" family of brothers and sisters and life was good.. until my mother remarried when i was 10. a series of life-changing events rocked our world, but through those events the jw were still our "rock".
A truly beautiful story. What a brave woman you are (and were).
Hope you find many good things to fill all those empty places JWs have long provided in your life.
