help with parenting ?

for those who are now out and we can't use the 'what would jehovah think' method any more, has anyone struggled with discipline since leaving?.

my parents were so strict and laughter and silliness was frowned upon.

- especially by a militant stepfather.

I raised two boys without the help of Jwism. Yeah, I pulled out my hair many a time, ...spent many an hour yelling about clean up, bad behavior, stupid girlfriends, school.....on an on it went.

My worst moment was when when one of my sons was in football, his grades were failing. The Coach had him go out and sell tickents for a game till midnight.

I Called the football line and started screaming, and swearing that they would want a failing kid out till midnight instead of doing homework.

The next day, one of the coaches said to my son...."I'm praying for you son with the mother you have."

Fast forward: I got to hear what a wonderful coach he was....If I had, had enough gumption, I would have slapped him silly.

One son is now 25 earning over 54K a year at 25, the younger working for the Department of Defense with Security Clearance. Both still working on various degrees.

My husband has been the biggest push and provider in all of this...

Fight like a tiger....no jw background needed.

why are americans so paranoid about the government?.

please understand im in no way trying to be disrespectful to your country im just trying to understand why their seams to be an outcry every time someone mentions the government legislating over something eg healthcare.

although i dont trust our pollies i would never withdraw my support without at least reading the legislation first.

Lucy, this just my personal opinion. Others can object, ignore, or agree. In the previous 8 years before Obama,...we had a president who was very influenced by the religious right.....He felt god was backing him. He was questionably elected the second time. Between himself and his devil of a vice president...they created murder, overseas and in our own country.....ignoring problems here, and profiting from their investments in war.

The American public eventually woke up and were so angry, they elected Obama. I was one of them. I am still waiting for something better, I believe Obama is trying hard and not a weasel like Bush or Cheney. But, our Congress/Senate is bought and sold by special interests.....

Such as the Pharmaceutical Industries, Cigarette producers, The Beef, chicken and Pork industries, Oil, natural gas, coal, and most of all the insurance industries.

Its absolute rape of the the American public and it needs to stop. All these companies promise major funds to congress members if they vote their way....

Those funds are for re-election, and as far as I can tell that's all our congress cares about....Major dollars to advertise their re-election.

The entire system is absolute poison....the average American is never represented

my beard looks good

since my fade, i have decided to do what all jw men and some jw women do.

i have grown a beard.

i have more compliments on it from people i work with and come in contact with than ever before.

There is nothing more gorgeous than a very neat, short trimmed beard and mustache on a man. Soooo nice! So masculine!

All that shaving for a baby face.....a waste of time!

First Christmas until ruined by family Jdubs

we were having a wonderful christmas until some relatives came to see us.

we put away the tree and everything so they wouldnt b stumbled.

i swear they came to see if we were doing anything non jw.

It takes me an entire day to get mine down.

My growing opinion about religion

when i walked away from jw's i thought that i would find other religions more comforting, less controlling.

what i found was more of the same.

religion acting like a 'prophet'.

Jeff, I agree. I have totally given up on religion....any religion. Especially organized religion.

I raised my boys to believe in God, but not needing to belong to a any religious "party"...similar to politics.

I am not an atheist or an agnostic. My MIL is a Unitarian...I don't buy into that either.

Sometimes I think that the true religion, might be in the future....Or it may never exist.

In the end, its up to God who qualifies for whatever..... or not, or nothing at all.

Right to Die Issue Terminally Ill, Hopelessly Paralized, Etc..What Are Your Thoughts?

first off let me say this is not about me, i'm happy and healthy.

it really about all the suffering i see people going thru.

examples in my family over the years have caused me to think very seriously this.. i could give you a couple of examples and i'm sure some of our posters can tell other horror stories they'd witnessed where perhaps it would have been much better for them and their family if they could have passed away painlessly and with much more dignity.. one of my sisters developed breast cancer and died after about a 12month struggle, we saw her waste away to just skin and bones, it was hard on me as well as her two young children and husband.

I watched my father slowly die of bone cancer that went to his brains and lungs. It was horrible. He was a vital, strong man his entire life. 6 foot 3 250 lbs, entire muscle and strength.

"Slowly"....is subjective...it took 3 months, it felt like an eternity.

He was on liquid morphine, and while he was still able to communicate, he kept refusing it because it made him into a babbling idiot, and he knew it.

But the pain became too much, and we suspect that the Hospice nurse....helped him die....we were thankful. He was no longer eating, or drinking.

Liquid morphine is deadly....it will stop the heart.

The entire subject is heartbreaking, but as my mom says, whats wrong with dieing at home surrounded by family without artificial extension of a torturous death.

Makes sense to me.

Does Our Being Former JWs Affect Our Enjoyment of XMas?

i went to 2 parties yesterday.

i actually was invited to 4 this year.. i started out at my daughter's at 7:30 a.m. and my daughter, sil, 2 grandkids and my ex gave presents to one another.

95% of the gifts were for my 2 year old grandaughter because it was really her first xmas to unwrap presents and get into the "spirit".. then i went in the afternoon to my gf's and they had a big spread and we (once again) exchanged gifts.. here's my bottom line: i enjoyed the family and friends getting together.

Every year, I have always been thrilled to decorate....inside....never out. Plan dinner, purchase gifts on the Internet....etc. etc.

This year was the exception.....I dragged in the tree, put up about 20 ornaments, and plugged it in twice. It is now down and back out to the garage.

Its been tough this year keeping up with payroll, insurance, accounting fees, taxes etc, let alone normal bills.

My background as a jw really kicked in, especially after I had received a printout from a Jewish website. It seemed to pull up and confirm everything from the past.

On a positive note, we had a wonderful day as a family, with a delicious dinner, and spent the evening watching the revamped Vertigo movie on a large flat screen TV, munching on plenty of deserts. It was probably one of the best Christmas's we've had.

It was more about being together than gifts or the day.....We all sat together on a huge leather couch, with the dog snuggled in, ....it was like old times as a family! Somehow it had nothing to do with Christmas. It was about our family, our history and reconnecting.

What will the elders think?

a week ago my wife and i ran into a jw nephew and his wife at the supermarket.

despite knowing that my wife and i are no longer jw's, he was very gracious, giving his aunt and i a warm hug and introducing his wife to us.

he casually mentioned meeting with the elders and their decision to disfellowship.

Gregor, that was shocking. I was wondering how he got on the plane with enough stuff to make and light explosives.

It seems just recently they allowed lighters again. I've got to admit, as a smoker, I was always able to get on with lighters in my purse, or front jeans pocket. They were too worried about shoes, and shampoo, perfume, and shaving cream.

They might need to start adding dogs for scent detection. It wouldn't be any more time consuming, considering we stand in those long snaking lines while everyone removes their shoes and jackets.

It sounds more like he was saying it out loud to convince himself. When I was in, (way back in the day), tattoos were forbidden. There were even articles about it, and a scripture used to back it up. I can't imagine they have let up on this.

He sounds like a nice young fellow.
