Mom is gone
by Katheryn ini'm not much of a poster here, but the passing of my mom on friday is as good a reason as any.. she was in deep, no doubt will be refered to as "faithful to the end" by those who eulogize her.
this new chapter in my life of course has me is a reflecive mood.
i'm sure when she was diagnosed with cancer 4 years ago that her hope was that the "new system" would come before she succumbed.

???Do you spank your kids???

I spanked my two oldest, in retrospect, it was completely unnessesary. But the society stressed training your kids from infancy. And training included spanking.
I am extremely ashamed of how young I began spanking my oldest child.
I have another young one now. She has never been spanked and never will be. I'll let you know in twenty years or so how she turns out
There are so many more effective ways of getting your child to behave that does not include srtiking them.
You get really fast results with spanking, I think thats why it appeals to so many people.

Allstate Commercials freaking me out
by dinah inthey give a statistic about how many teen drivers go out for a drive and never come home.. my daughter will be 15 in october and will get a learner's permit.
i had dreaded the day they started driving since they were about 10.. .

When my older girls got their license, I hoped they would soon have a mild fender bender. I did soon after i got my license and it quickly woke me up to the seriousness of driving.
I got my wish and it had the same effect on them too. It changed their whole attitude about it.
But yeah, those commercials are scary,

How Were You Treated as a Jehovah's Witness if You Had Depression ?
by flipper inmost of us who were in the jehovah's witnesses for some time realize that for years the watchtower society had always discouraged it's rank and file members from going to see therapists, or professional counselors if they had depression, or serious chemical depression.
the watchtower society always told us to go out in service more, do more personal study, be more regular at meetings - and essentially we would lose our depression , and everything would fall right back into place.
the old, " don't worry, be happy " cliche.

In the White Salmon Washington area i was visiting some friends years ago. One person announced that sister soandso had attempted suicide the previous day and was now in the hospital. One guy, an elder , immediately said rather loudly "well that's an automatic disfellowshipping!" Someone asked why and he said that this sister had gone to the eldersr in the past saying that she was depressed and suicidal, and the bros had made it clear to her that suicide was a sin. So she was willfully sinning!
Fortunatly this sister now belonged to another hall and I don't believe the df'd her.
However she was successful at suicide a few years later.

Long list= Brothers who have ripped you off! $$$ has this happened to you?
by Witness 007 in1. the elder i was in a bissness with decided a hand shake was not a contract, and paid me $500 dollars instead of the $3,000 he should have....i felt so stupid, but quit with him and treated him like a disfellowshiped person since....also he would pay me half a days wage when i worked from 8am till 3pm ???????
when told about this he said sorry but "couldn't work out how to re-emburse the lost hours.".
2. my elderly mum sold some furniture when moving, to a sister who promised to pay from her single parent pension in small installments........nope!

Oh wow, I have dozens of stories, but suffice it to say, that even as a true believer, there came a time when my hubby and I swore we would neither hire, not be employed by a JW ever again. We made it a hard and fast rule.
OK, one story. We had a bro in our hall that was an extremely hard worker. He went from being a penniless missionary to very successfully owning and managing real estate. He would buy absolute dumps, and he would fix them up doing every bit of work himself. Over the years it was rumered that he was quite wealthy even though he and his family lived very modestly. Well he had the great misfortune to sell something to a JW, the JW didn't pay up to the tune of around $20,000.00. The elders got involved and they told brother hard-worker that he needed to forgive the debt because bro flaky could not afford to pay him.
Bro hard-worker said hell no and took the other brother to court and got a judgement against him. After that the elders in our hall would warn the r&f not to do business with bro hardworker cause he would find a way to squeeze every last dime out of you. Two elders even took time out of their busy schedule to come to our home and warn my husband and I about this man, including telling us all the details about the JC's concerning the matter. (yeah, the elders in our circuit were the worst gossips you can imagine)
What's really interesting is that years later I heard the story from bro hardworkers familys side. And they told me the same story that the elders did. How those elders felt justified in what they did just amazes me.
