I think a lot of people want to believe their JW upbringing was miserable.
Why would people do that? What is their motivation?
25 years ago i lived in an apartment overlooking the grounds of the local high school.. at the time i still totally believed the lie.
a lot of the dub students went to my hell.. i noticed looking out my window, that the witless kids always looked miserable and isolated.
yet in the kingdumb hell they would behave almost euphorically.. what was going on?.

my mother told me of the co giving a talk and telling everyone to get their hankies out because they would be sure to cry, which evidently some did.. a 5 year old boy was dying in the hospital and his parents were by his bedside.
he was drifting in and out of consciousness and then he opened up his eyes and asked his mother if he was a catholic.
the mom told her son he was not.
The CO praised the mom for teaching her baby boy from infancy the truth of God's Word.
so the truth of gods word is dont' be a Catholic? Where is that scripture?

So Minny, what was your Moms opinion of the experience?
i was talking with a witness the other day (mistake number 1) and i brought up a quote from the 80's.
the friggin 1980's and he said "that was old light we don't believe that anymore...".
i mean at what point can they start throwing out these quotes?
Is there a thread anywhere in here that lists absurd beliefs that have never been discarded (in other words, still current light)?
Ithink that would be a great thread to start Madsweeny!

It's not old light until they update it with new info.
If they taught something 20 years ago, and don't say another word about it, then that is what they are teaching.
they met me as i was getting out of my car at my apts.. after stating a few of my newfound beliefs in possibilities, the one lady kept quoting the bible to me after i said that i had no respect for it and didn't believe in it.. i told them both that i thought it was simply a book with interesting stories rewritten over and over again from mythology.. i mentioned epona taking elish(j)a to heaven in a flaming chariot.. i told them that the jesus story has been rewritten many times before the supposed event even happened (egyptian god horus).. every time she brought up something new, i countered it with why i thought it was not believable.. the best one was when i got to tell them of my relatives who passed away at an old age and did die.
i told them that truth doesn't change.. that truth should never have been taught as a fact to be counted on.
when it did change, i said that you have to take a step back and say come on!
One thing I've noticed is JW's have nothing to say when you say you do not believe the bible is the word of God, it jut stumps them.
They have to change the subject, or they scrounge up some scripture that "proves" it's the word of God.

Oh, and she said something about others using their imaginations and coming up with stuff out of thin air like I was.
Where do they think that the GB get all that crap from?

7/10.. sylvia.
5/10 here
But I don't work in a office setting, so I'm pretty clueless.
i just ordered "combating mind control" from an online book seller, but i am having a difficult time finding "releasing the bonds".. i have found it on a few sites, but it is usually going for $40 or more.
(i assume it is now out of print?).
is it worth paying extra for "releasing the bonds" or is most of the material from "combating mind control" enough?.
I have read both books and In my opinion "Releasing the Bonds" is the best.
so in an argument we get to the point that the wts has problems.
so what, says her, if you got a meter (or yardstick if you prefer) and one centimeter is missing, are you going to throw it all away?
the same, if from the truth are missing only some pieces, is it not the truth?
I use to have a one yard cloth tape measure that I used for sewing. One day I accidentaly cut off the first inch. No problem i thought, its easy just to mentally add an inch when I measure something.
So I kept that damn tape measure, for years. It caused me no end of trouble and mistakes and wasted materials because I would forget about the missing inch.
I eventually threw the damn thing away and spent $1.99 on a new one, problems solved.
This story is a good analgy about how long it took me to toss the JW religion and how dumb it was to hang on to something that was completely useless and was costing me so dearly.
Excellant comeback Teel!
