  When, if ever, did you start caring about POLITICS?

  i've said a few times on here that i'm 99% mentally free of jwism, or something similar.

  but i think i may need to back that number down just a bit.. i now believe that this world is all we've got and that,collectively, it matters what we as a species do on this orb if we want to continue to spread our dna indefinitely.

  (some would argue that human extinction would be a good thing, but i'm not in that camp.

  I started caring about politics straight away, i think it seemed to fill that gap that was left when i faded. I began educating myself on politics and found it really interesting. My first act of crossing the disfellowshipping lane was to vote in the 1997 UK election, it felt so empowering.

  Now though i have become disallusioned with politics. I look back at that scripture (Jeremiah i think?) where it says, "it does not belong to man to direct his own step" ... or something like that. Different political systems have given it a go and nothing has worked.

  But now my disallusionment comes from educating myself, rather than being blindly told "we are no part of the world".

  it seems the entire world feels that americans are not only ignorant of international events but also void of any sense regarding their own politics.

  after reading one spicey thread on the topic of our apparent unwitting density i had a couple things to say.

  It amazes me that people think that by voting once every few years defines democracy.

  HS, those are good definitions of what democracy means. The thought process behind communism in that people setting up some sort of local committees to govern and giving the power back to the workers is more democratic than anyhting we see today. Unfortunately both in the USSR and China mans greed took over and what we see is state captitalism rather than true communism.

  Jeremiah and the 70 years. Jewish exile or Babylonian rule?

  i have never until a few days ago been able to reconcile the 70 year prophecy with the 587/6 bce date for jerusalems destruction.

  although a post was about this in a previous thread by a@g , i would like to explore this more.. when the 70 years are applied to babylonian rule, rather than the jewish exile everything seems to make sense.. to ellaborate for those who haven't come across it, this is how 587/6 does match the 70 year prophecy.. i hope a@g doesn't mind but i have cut and paste his post:-.

  the 587 date does match the bible.... (jeremiah 25:11) 11 and all this land must become a devastated place, an object of astonishment, and these nations will have to serve the king of babylon seventy years.".

  I've always thought that there are two 70 year periods that run somewhat parallel to each other. First one from 609bc to 539bc for Babylonia and the second one from 587/6bc to 517/516bc for Jerusalem. The actual exile would then be about 50 years.
  
  I suppose this has been discussed to death before though...

  Discussed to death? Here, no way. just go to the search facility and type in 70 years

  I find it interesting. When i first set out to look at 587/6 v 607 i didn't realise the subject would be so vast and deep. I am still learning. My next step is to read both Johnson's and Furuli's books.

  How Did YOU Personally Feel About "Keeping The Congregation Clean"?

  did you report others that you either suspected of doing something wrong or knew of that had committed some "wrongdoing"?.

  the elders regularly tried to lay a "guilt trip" on members by telling them they could personally "hinder god's holy spirit" if they didn't come forward to the elders and either fink on themselves or someone else.. did you buy into this crap??

  As far as the Queen intervening in 1975, it's true to a point. The Judges on the High Court were all old conservatives who despised the elected Labour Gov. who brought in massive sweeping changes like land rights for Aboriginies. They found an ancient law that gave power to the Queen's representative the Governor General to dissolve parliament and appoint an interim Government in times of crisis like when the Senate cannot decide an issue. Guess who they chose? The conservative opposition. There was massive protests and the GG died a despised rambling drunk. That legal loophole has been patched.

  Thanks doofdaddy, i didn't know the details just remember it being mentioned when i was at college many years back.
