Daniel 9:2.... 70 years question

sorry to rehash an old topic.. in the first year of his reign, i, daniel, understood from the scriptures, according to the word of the lord given to jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of jerusalem would last seventy years.

daniel is clearly speaking of jeremiah 25, but here he speaks of the desolation of jerusalem, rather than a babylonian dominance of jeremiah.. so how does daniel fit in with a 587/6 date for the destruction of jerusalem and the dominance of the babylonian empire refered to in jeremiah?.

alcoholism a clear and present danger for JWs and XJWs?

i was having an interesting discussion with an xjw recently and we both knew of elders who were alcoholic but who were allowed to keep their privileges because their condition was described as a disease.

the elder i knew was also spotted in a drunken state on a couple of occasions.

he kept his privileges.

Alcoholism has no religious boundaries. It has no social boundaries, not status boundaries.....alcoholism isn't bothered about who it effects.

I have met hundreds of recovered alcoholics but know of only two who are ex jw's, one of those being myself. I also know of ex jw's that drink heavily, but then again i know of many heavy drinkers.

I think the effect of being in a controlling religion can be a trigger for an alcoholic, but i don't think being a JW causes someone to be an alcoholic.

I've just been looking them up after i was talking to someone about them. As Christianity took hold in the West, the East developed their own form of Christianity. This was fused with Buddhism and Toaism, mucht he same way as Roman Western Christianity was fused with pagan celebrations (Christmas/Saturnalia. etc). These ancient writings were found in the begining of the 20th century.

The theology presents Jesus as a way to freedom from the inevitable round of reincarnation and suffering which dominated that society. This Christianity is vegetarian, anti-slavery and killing in any way, gives equality to male and female and tells people that they are basically good. And it lives contended alongside other faiths.

Compare this with the Christianity of the same time in England. The original ideas in the life of Jesus are expressed through Greek and Roman culture, Christian symbols fuse with strange beasts and designs of Celtic art as can be seen in the Lindisfarne gospels. This Christianity accepts the warfare, slavery and male dominance of western society. It tells people that they are basically bad because of Adam and Eve and "original sin". And it seeks to be the only religion.

At the time of the Jesus Sutras Christianity was an eastern religion; there were more Christians east of the Holy Land than there were to the west. But there had been a theological argument over the nature of Christ so that the west disconnected itself from the eastern Christians and labelled them Nestorian heretics. There was also the political split between the western idea of Christianity run as the Roman Empire had been and the east where different areas (Indian, Persia, Tibet, China) had always been politically independent.

As somebody who has an interest in Buddhism and Eastern philosophy, i'm definately going to order myself a copy as it looks a good read.

i'll start with john 14:8-10. .

scriptural support for the triune nature of god, and the gradual recognition that jesus christ, the word incarnate (john 1:1), was and is god, can be found throughout the bible.

the evidence is abundant and unfolds like a flower, foreshadowed in the old testament and revealed in the new testament.

For to us a child is born,

i had to admire the parents and how they realised the damage they were doing to their daughter by the amount of control they subjected her to.

Do you belive in UFO's?

as jw's we were meant to say no, but as free thinking people, i wonder what your opionion is?.

I've seen a UFO with my daughter, orange lights suspended in the sky at night. I was driving and when i saw it i couldn't believe an aeroplane was flying so low, banking and turning showing it's underside....but couldn't understand why the lights were orange and i couldn't understand why it appeared to be moving slowly. I couldn't see any shape to it, just the lights. As i continued driving and subsequently turned away from it round a bend in the road and down a hill i didn't give it much after thought apart from me and my daughter saying it looked strange.

The next day in the local paper there were many reported sightings of the same event, but for those who stopped to watch it, it was suspended there for 15 minutes before it went.
