  it seems the entire world feels that americans are not only ignorant of international events but also void of any sense regarding their own politics.

  after reading one spicey thread on the topic of our apparent unwitting density i had a couple things to say.

  As far as the Queen intervening in 1975, it's true to a point. The Judges on the High Court were all old conservatives who despised the elected Labour Gov. who brought in massive sweeping changes like land rights for Aboriginies. They found an ancient law that gave power to the Queen's representative the Governor General to dissolve parliament and appoint an interim Government in times of crisis like when the Senate cannot decide an issue. Guess who they chose? The conservative opposition. There was massive protests and the GG died a despised rambling drunk. That legal loophole has been patched.

  Thanks doofdaddy, i didn't know the details just remember it being mentioned when i was at college many years back.

  Letter From My Elder Brother 2 Years Ago ; My Reply to Him

  as some of you know, me and my wife 2 years ago were accused of " circumstancial fornication" 1 month before we were married because my ex wife ( divorced 1998) and my youngest daughter , both witnesses, drove an hour and a half away from where they lived to find me at my fiances house at 9:30 a.m. in the morning to take my fiance to get her tires fixed.

  both my fiance and me were fully clothed !

  then my ex-wife ran and gossipped to my witness parents and older siblings about it , bringing about them writing condemning letters to me ; without even checking out the accuracy of the false charges.

  When i read things like this i actually feel sorry for your brother. All he believes in is the shit the WT puts out. He obviously isn't like you who can stand up and think for themselves. He is towing the WT line and hasn't got the balls to think for himself. The WTS is so devisive when it comes to families.

  Bottom line, parliaments are better because they have more parties represented...

  The number of parties in a parliament has more to do with the way those parties are elected than anything else. In this country we have the first passed the post system, where an MP is elected for his area, then that MP has his vote in Parliament, once the number of MPs gets past the winning post that party becomes the government. IMO a much fairer system would be proportional representation, where the percentage of vote would reflect the percentage in Parliament. This would mean that coalitions have to be formed, but it would be a much fairer representation.

  The Scottish Parliament, Welsh and NI assemblies favour more towards PR, but even that IMO can go further. I do not really see how more parties are represented in our parliament with the electoral system we have in place at the moment.

  I have read before that the Queen retains the legal power to dissolve Parliament and to appoint the Prime Minister, even if that power has not been used for a very long time, and that such a procedure would be extremely irregular at this time.

  You are right to a point.

  The Queen only has the power to dissolve Parliament at 1) it's request or 2) if it decides to extend it's period of office. The latter i believe happened in Australia in the 70's. The Australian government decided to bring in legislation to extend it's time in power and the Queen stepped in. I cannot remember the details but i'm sure the info is out there.

  She only appoints the Prime Minister at the request of Parliament. It is not her decision.

  Do black Americans claim Obama as one of their own?

  i was watching an interview with a black american recently about barrack obama.

  interestlingly he said that black americans find it hard to claim him as one of their own.

  he said that black people would much prefer to have someone who is from the stereotypical upbringing of a black american to be the presidential candidate.

  Those quotes you have given about John Taylor are representative of a number of people in the tory party. Please don't think that those right wing tory views represent the general population. As for John Taylor, i don't like the guy. But only because he has the attitude of well if he can do it, so can others. He has done little to help those from less priveleged backgrounds. He is one of those guys who when he reaches the top pulls the ladder away in not helping others climb it. A bit like M.Thatcher, you would have thought being the first female prime minister that she would help other women to achieve what she did, when in fact she did nothing.
