Peter Coconis was raised a SoCal boy like me (by way of Kentucky) we came to bethel together and eventually roomed together. After I left Brooklyn, he married a girl from NJ. Then a few years went by and they got pregnant (they know what causes that now too!) so they headed to North Carolina where his family ended up waiting for the paradise to come. The last I heard, he was, what else, doing janitorial work.

I started out on 2/7 working on a Smyth sig stitcher back in 76', me and a guy named Dave Straud from Tennessee used to have production battles to see who could sew the most sigs in a day. Then I inspected books for about a year. Floor overseer was Dave Ersland. Other names on that floor were Phil Harding from PA, Richard Chambers who worked in cardcutting, and Dave Ashley who thought he was the best basketball player on the floor until I took him to the proverbial hoop one day!
We played basketball down at the Squibb bldg. on most Wednesday nights, the floor of course was not wood but thick concrete and most of us paid for that later in life with bad knees, but whatever, the world was coming to an end anytime soon, right everybody?!
Then I was assigned to the Ink Room on 1/5 and spent the rest of my days at bethel there working with guys like John Parham, Peter Coconis (best man at my wedding), Gilbert Cyriacs from Marysville, KS, and of course our floor overseer Norman Brekke.
We would see alot of tours come through the Ink Room, most really thought it smelled bad, but we were so use to it. I remember one day a bucket of pastel blue ink fell from a top shelf right on my head.....it took weeks to get it all out. For those of you who worked the presses it was the color code 14P.
Before I came to Brooklyn I worked at Mammoth Onyx Cave in Kentucky as a tour guide, so I was assigned once a week as a factory tour guide and got to meet many witnesses from around the world. Most were very friendly and just wanted to "know" somebody at bethel. So, many of the tours would offer to take the tour guides out to dinner or give tips, it was great!
Many tours were made up of parents trying to marry off their daughters. I met many young beautiful pioneer girls this way. The only problem was, I was too stupid to know what was going on, really! Being a born-and-raised dub I was sooo naive! Gymbob

Hey everyone!
I've been away for awhile but this thread is great and I just had to post something!
First, Jim Petrie was a good friend, and we were in the same cong. in Brooklyn for 4+ years back in the mid-late 70's. I saw him several years ago at a DC in central Calif., didn't have too much time to speak but he looked good. He should be here now......
Judy Martin was also in that same cong., a sweet, humble, prettier young single bethel sister you would not have found back then. Also in our Bay Ridge Cong. was another single bethel girl named Anita Berazza, she and Judy hung around together alot (safety in numbers!) she was also a sweetie but had a few more pounds than Judy and didn't get the same attention her way. Anita had a younger brother at bethel named Rueben (pressroom I think?), also in the same Bay Ridge Congregation in Brooklyn
One of my favorite bethel stories involved the lunchtime softball games next to the factory...anyone here play on one of those teams? Back in the 70's almost every factory dept. had a softball team and we would skip lunch and play fastpitch softball on the blacktop baseball fields next to the factory bldgs. I played for the Ink room team, also Dispatch and also umpired a game or two a week (Hey, I liked softball!).
Anyway, one game I was umpiring behind the plate and Dan Sydlik was pitching. Yes the GB Sydlik! He was a pretty good pitcher but let others bat for him, he wouldn't do any running.
So the count is 3 balls and 1 strike, Dan's pitch comes in high and inside and I yell out, "ball 4, take your base!" About that time I get a look from Sydlik that to this day I will never forget! He looks at me and says (in that deep Jehovah drama voice)....."BROTHER??!!"
What could I do? so without even hesitating I yell out, "STRIKE TWO!!" Made the batter mad as hell.... Gymbob
terry's recent thread about god's love made me start wondering the above question.
normally a ransom is done as a swap, the payment is made on exchange.
2000 years ago jesus made payment by dieing.
You can have whatever perspective you want, but it's still based on nothing but NOTHING....feelings....thoughts....wonders and HOPES!
Ancient Jewish writings are not something to base your LIFE on. Bye!
i can not describe the sadness of hearing him tell me, i asked him to think about what a great part time job he has, with free schooling.
he says they will probably take him back.
his abilities are suitable for closing down brooklyn, so at least he will be there (i love nyc).
Oompa,
Both of us being former bethelites, I agree with New boy....it's probably the best thing you could hope for at this point (if he really wants to stay a JW that is).
It's important to plant some seeds.....tell him that when he gets there he will see some things that are not suppose to be at bethel....drinking, girls, partying, etc.(Hey why did I leave exactly? Just kidding). So every time he sees stuff like that going on, he will be reminded of what YOU told him.
I've seen ALOT of guys show up at bethel thinking that bethelites are nearly perfect and poop out little pink twinkies when they go....when he sees what the real bethel is like, his whole view of the organization will change....MAKE SURE HE HAS SOMEONE TO TURN TO AND TALK ABOUT THIS WITH. Gymbob
he said he was just checking addresses because my house was on the "do not call" list, and he was checking to see if the same people lived here or had moved away.
so i told him that nobody that lives in this house has asked jw's not to call, and that it was probably at the request of my ex-wife who knows i don't attend anymore.. so he gives me that ookaaayy look..... i'm out working in the yard and so we sit down in the garage to have a chat..... he doesn't know me, but i remember him from a different cong., and he doesn't know i da'd myself over 5 years ago.
he also doesn't know how much i've learned and how long i've been waiting for this day!.

We actually had a great conversation, I remained very calm and cool, and I'm sure he expected me to be different, and i'm sure he felt like a guy who brought a knife to a gunfight. We spoke about the society's involvement in the U.N., child ped. cases settled out of court, the WTB&TS never getting one thing right in over 100 years, etc. He tried to make me look like I didn't know about the organization, so I told him that I remember when the bible and the songbooks were green, and of the many years I served as a BETHELITE, or VACATION, TEMPORARY, AUG., REGULAR and SPECIAL PIONEER.
He never had one answer. This guy has been a elder for 20+ years......amazing these people just don't get it. A few times in our little chat I could actually see his eyes just glaze over, like he's not heard a thing I've said.
In the end, he said he would keep my address on the "do not call" list, but I told him he didn't need to do that..... I don't mind talking to witnesses at all!
lovely lil started a thread that said it had external evidence of jesus' which i think proved rather useless and ultimately ended in debate about god's existence.
she said she wanted to start another thread about proof that god exists so i figured i would.
so this thread would be for actual proof of god.
Lil,
If they all worship the same god, and scripture interpretation isn't that important for people of "faith", then....WHAT DIFFERANCE DOES IT MAKE??
for anyone that looks at this thread, could you write something either profound or simply interesting so as to make the reader see the truth about "the truth"?
?
When I was leaving "The Truth", I asked my dad (the elder) this question: Is there any way possible that the witnesses might not be who they claim to be? He didn't even have to think about it, but answered, NO WAY. So I said, "Is it POSSIBLE for you to be wrong about that?", and he said, "no, it's impossible for them not to be who they claim to be".
This is how JW's believe. I believe any JW would answer the same way.
To say it's IMPOSSIBLE that you're wrong is the definition of being CLOSED-MINDED.
Since leaving the witnesses I have asked this same couple of questions to Mormons, Christian fundamentalists, Jews, etc about their own beliefs, and get the same response......
Everybody has the truth, just ask them and they will tell you!
so i sent them this email:.
you might like to see this site: http://www.watchtowerletters.com.
it has a lot of correspondence with the brothers at bethel and gives a lot of great information.. thanks!.
Good reply Lt.CmdLore!!
