I know the issue has passed, but I do find it curious that he admitted to wanting to "hit it and quit it." The real dudes who operate that way usually operate by misdirection.

You shouldn't find that funny.
by HintOfLime ini've tried to generally let go of my jw childhood - ultimately they are a sad people, governed by sad old men, following the poor advice of long-dead and even sadder men, congragating in sad pithy buildings.
tonight however, i've been reminded of something.. growing up as a jw, i ended up seeing several movies in theaters with other witnesses - sometimes just with my friends, but often enough in larger groups that included the more... indoctrinated... variety.
it seemed to me, that whenever the group included more than my immediate friends, there was almost always that one person that managed to find something offensive about every movie.

Ugh, I hated that "conform your conscience to the weakest link's conscience" rule. It made fearful people out of myself and friends. But I do remember when I stopped caring about that. I was giving a ride to a friend in my car, and I happened to let my above average sound system bump a little near the KH.
"You should probably turn that down, Andrew, because *so-and-so* is standing right there outside the hall, and she'll be offended."
"So?" I said. "Let her be offended. I don't care."
He didn't say anything to me after that point. I wonder if he really started treating me differently after that point. Maybe he did. I don't know. But it felt good not to be restrained.
In fact, I'm sure it was all building a frightening case to him. I came in late to a service meeting one time, eating a banana. The same friend was shocked--SHOCKED--that I had the audacity to do that. Mind you, I didn't flippantly toss the peel on the floor or anything. I just didn't feel like finishing the banana in the car. So what? I'm eating. And if my eating is more interesting than the field service meeting, whose fault is that?

Why is there a need for Ministry School presentations?
by RULES & REGULATIONS inwe were told that the preaching work was lead and guided by ''angels'' and the holy spirit.. if that is so,why the need for magazine presentations week after week?
why is a half hour spent showing each member what to say and how to respond to certain questions?
why practice presentations when the angels and holy spirit are there to help?.

If everyone actually read the magazines and gave a crap about the work, then there'd be no reason for it, really. I know I always felt so nervous without a prepared spiel.

"Do not become unevenly yoked"--weird comment at meeting
by sd-7 ini heard a really bizarre comment at one of the recent meetings.
someone, in quoting this scripture, of course went with the usual doctrine of not marrying/dating someone who is not a jw.
but one woman took it even further, by saying that this applied even to people inside the congregation who 'weren't spiritual enough' or didn't have some magnificent spiritual goals in life.

I heard a really bizarre comment at one of the recent meetings. But the scripture says UNBELIEVERS, so how can you apply it to BELIEVERS because they don't happen to want to pioneer or something?
Of course. Like everything else, it applies "in principle". Using that logic, you really could justify anything. Just another example of why I see no need to just go along with this religion.
--Christopher
I'm going to play Idiot's Advocate here and say that this über-dub isn't entirely off base with her comment. She wanted to apply this scripture to believers too, which is not the best application. But I think the concept of "not being unevenly yoked" works itself out anyway. For example, I'm sure you all would tend to notice the cliques that would develop inside the hall: the über-dub pioneer weirdos, the ladder-climbing ass-kissers, the young people who were in it for the social aspect, etc. Do you think the social young people would look for the pioneer weirdos? It most certainly did not happen. There was a major social wall between us (in the brief time that I tried to become the cool dub kid instead of the ladder-climbing ass-kisser), and we were fine with it. What ends up happening is that all the cool kids look amongst the other cool kids for friendship and dating. Whenever I'd hear about a marriage or a proposal, I'd think, "Isn't that funny? That guy just went for his best friend's sister!" It was pretty funny to see how much they stuck rigidly within their social spheres, in defiance of Watchtower logic (namely, that only a "spiritually mature" pioneer weirdo person is worth looking at). But I would never see the pioneer weirdos crossing the aisle to look for a cool kid dub, or vice versa. You might see a pioneer weirdo hook up with a ladder-climber, but the ladder-climbers are smart enough to know when rules can be broken or ignored, which is slightly different from the adoring weirdos' outlook on dubbery.
So really, what she's saying works out in the end. But she didn't need to proclaim this as if it were some sort of new sacred truth.

Song Book changes - the 'real' reason behind them - EYE OPENING
by EndofMysteries init's very interesting comparing things that are removed.
for one, new world order and new world, new order, all being eliminated from everything.
just research nwo, "new world order", etc, to see.

Wow, I'm glad I didn't stick around to sing these new, even more terrible songs. Even the old songs were beginning to really grate on me when I started mentally exiting the group.

"You were a much nicer person when you were in The Truth TM !"
"I'm nice to my real friends--the people who like me due to my character--not just because I attend your meetings. I get a little defensive when people who claim to care about me are only interested in seeing me attend those meetings."

Understanding JW Recruiting Concepts Can Help Others To Leave
by AllTimeJeff inunderstanding jw recruiting concepts can help others to leave.
when i first left jehovah's witnesses (jw's), i was somewhat amused at the sheer amount of anti jw websites out there.
while websites like freeminds.org and jwfacts.com are great, (non hysterical sites that stress fact and presentation over emotional responses), there are at least 5 times as many other sites that act as if you should treat a jw at your door like you would a spreader of the ebola virus.. i don't disagree with the fact that jw's are somewhat dangerous and usually go for the low hanging fruit.

Jeff has a series of articles on his Freeminds blog - well worth the time to read his other musings.....
Capital! I can use that link. And thanks for the permission, Jeff.
