Wondering why we had to do the hokey-pokey dance with books got me wondering what was up with the "Truth." I wondered why we had to switch from the Knowledge book to the What Does the Bible Really Teach? book, right away.

Was it REALLY a Bible Study?
by fullofdoubtnow ini've just been reading an email that an ex jw sent to dedpoet recently, and he raised an interesting point, so i though i'd post it (dp emailed him back, and he gave permission).
hi trevor.
i came across your website recently, and as an ex witness living in north derbyshire, i thought i'd share a few thoughts i had recently with you.. like yourself, i joined the jehovahs witnesses in the early 90's, being baptised in 1992 at the district convention (the same one as dp).

My father told me the only reason he got baptized was to
by TTS inmake the family happy.. before that conversation ensued, i told him that certain things were not right with the org.
for example: bethel layoffs of older folks, always asking for money like the catholic church.
he said he did not fully agree with 1914 and going to 5 meetings and seeing the pioneers waste their life out in the territory.

I never really understood why we tried to "show concern for the poor" by handing them tracts but...how can we convert them if we don't even give them something to eat?
The justification always went something like this: "There's no sense in painting a sinking ship or putting a chandelier in a building that's about to be demolished."
So that means you can't help somebody out? If times are tough for you, you'd better hope you know somebody in a more loving congregation than most. Otherwise you're SOL. -

Update! The pressure is rising, Elders on my trail!
by drew sagan inhere is yet another update on what is going on in my world.
the elder i talked to a while back just couldn't let it be and now want's to have another discussion.
he now wants to meet with with another elder from the hall.
-
SirNose586
If the elder wants to talk to you again, why not one on one? When Paul straightened Peter out, he didn't say he had any help.
In one instance I am aware of, the elders were to inform a sister of something contained in a letter from another cong. They specifically said they would not answer any questions, yet FOUR elders met with her to read the brief letter.
--blindersoff
Wow, 4 elders? Was she Sister Hulk or something? "If she hulks out while I'm reading the letter, you distract her while I apply the Vulcan Death Grip!!" -

PO said automation and declining contributions reason for Bethel layoffs
by truthseeker inlast week at the meeting, the po, who has very close connections to bethel, said that he never thought he would see the day that bethelites were being sent home.
he said that the biggest two reasons he thought bethel were cutting back, was automation and a massive decline in contributions.
looks like you're right metatron about the contribution aspect being their achilles heel.

Another irony: the WTS discourages higher education, yet expects substantial contributions from members who are often not qualified to earn much more than minimum wage. It's like shooting someone in the foot and then expecting them to dance.

Good observation. Maybe there'll be a "new light" on this? Something like, "Please, go to college. Earn real money. Just so long as you donate to the Society and keep your hours up!" -

Is America one big cult?
by barry indont get me wrong im not a yanky basher like some we know but when visiting my dad the other day got me thinking when he played a dvd he had.. the dvd was of a concert of religious music by the assembly of god and the sdas most of the program was very good with excellent prerformers and uplifting music.
i thought the sdas in the states looked like they were being influenced by the more charasmatic a of g people because many were raising there hands like the aof g do.. there was nothing too unusual until about two thirds through when some marines marched in with the yanky flag with a marine either side complete with rifle .
the remainder of the concert was dedicated to nationalistic hyms of which i cant recall the titles.

Having not seen most of America, I can't answer your question with any degree of authority. I can tell you though, that the Christian music market is pretty healthy out in the Bible Belt. If you've never heard of the Bible Belt--and anyone feel free to correct me if I leave out some areas--it stretches from Oklahoma and Texas through the lower Midwest and the South.
Another way to explain it is the differences between "Red States" and "Blue States." That DVD was probably filmed in a "Red State," or a [Bible Belt] state that gave its electoral votes to President Bush in 2004. This is not to say that a religious concert of that nature can't take place in a Blue State, but it probably wouldn't happen there. -

Why baptise young ones?
by dobbie injust had two months worth of mags shoved through my door(thank goodness i wasn't in but out with kids having fun!
)had a flick through them but what caught my attention was the july 1st watchtower 2nd study article "youths, make it your choice to serve jehovah".
it seems to be basically encouraging all the young ones to get baptised, and mentions one boy who was only thirteen!i was'nt born into the jws but i know that in my early teen years i would personally never have been emotionally ready for such a major commitment.

Good story...
I'd say it won't happen as quickly as that, but dropping the Awake doesn't seem too farfetched, what with the recent printing reduction. I would like to see them get hit with a landmark lawsuit, though... -

Finally downloaded the application for America's Next Top Model. :)
by stillAwitness inwell, i been "living in sin" for about 5 days now and aside from an elder asking if i was gonna still do a talk i was scheduled for this past monday (i told him no of course.
he knows i moved out and only asked about my literature) i finally worked the nerve to download the application for this season's america's next top model.
i've been modeling for some time now and i figured what the hell...i have nothing to lose but $3.95 in postage.

You really got to sweat the small stuff when it comes to staying under the radar. Those little mistakes will nail you every time. I would really think about rearanging your room so the back of the monitor faces the door. And one more thing - Even when JWD is minimized, you can still see "Jehovah's Witness Dis" very clearly at the bottom of the screen. BTW, if your Dad is on the prowl make SURE you use a good program like CCleaner to sanitize your system after EVERY use. I would also recommend that you look into PGP Personal Edition. It comes with PGP disk, and can be very handy.
--Justice-One
I don't think I can rearrange my room so that my monitor faces away from the door. You have to peek around the corner to see it. I do usually remember to keep an unrelated tab open for quick minimization. The only reason why I got caught was because I was busy reading something else away from the comp, and it hadn't gone to screensaver yet. Otherwise I can sense people coming, no matter what I'm doing (sixth sense I guess) and hide it.
Thankfully, my dad respects my privacy, though that one time was an exception. I wouldn't expect him to get on my computer.
However, I will check out CCleaner and PGP Personal Edition.
