It's too bad the modern Society had to deny everything that Russel taught, plmkrzy. They could certainly use that advice right there.

Question about shunning from someone who has never been a JW....
by whyizit ini wondered, since the jws claim that jesus is their teacher, what evidence do they have of jesus shunning "bad associations"?
it seems to me, from reading the bible, that the religious people of his day really gave him a hard time, because he actually spent the majority of his time with "bad associates", rather than shunning them.
thomas, though he followed jesus, wasn't totally convinced.

James Taylor (he spent time in a mental instituition...he's probably demon influenced. Again)
Dang undercover, you had some paranoid parents. Taylor's music is some of the most chill songs I've ever heard.
I went through a phase. I used to listen to Korn, Godsmack, Powerman 5000, and other makers of loud music. I threw it out because I was listening to that stuff all the time, and it was loud and negative. So I collected it all and headed off to a dumpster, along with a couple of video games I had hidden from my folks. In retrospect, I could've sold all those things, but just getting rid of them was cathartic. Plus, I hadn't been caught for playing those games, and I decided to end it without getting found out!

jws celebrate birthdays?!
by dobbie ini was speaking to a friend last night, trying to explain why i don't go to meetings etc,(waste of time though she just can't seem to understand my point whatever i say), anyway she said as long as i don't d'a myself she can still speak to me.
she said they only d'f you if you commit a gross sin.
i refuted this saying if they knew i didn't agree with some of the teachings, sent a fathers day card etc and you weren't sorry they'd get rid of you.

My family has technically celebrated Thanksgiving a few times. My aunt and uncle would come down from Oakland and we would eat turkey sometime during the holiday weekend. We would never compare it to Thanksgiving, but it's certainly doing the same thing to celebrate!

Our P.O. said, "Boy, if you don't think armageddon is around the corner, then you haven't gotten anything out of the DC!"
The only thing that I can be sure is around the corner is food and sleep.

SirNose, I have the same reservations about referring a youth in trouble to the elders for support. An addict needs a healthy support network to help overcome his problems. The last thing he needs is to be booted out on his own.
The only reason kid-M still goes to the meetings is because of convenience. That guy and his best friend both have a problem with underage drinking, and if not going to the meetings carried no penalty, they would leave right now. Only the fear of loosing out on social contacts, and convenience, keeps them in.
If I had visual proof of their drunkenness, I would suggest a teen AA program. I will suggest it to my friend as an avenue of help, but there's no telling how those two will take it. After all, the four of us are good friends, so I'm trying to develop a way to suggest to them that they need help, but to do it as a friend, not as an MS or anything. One night, Kid-M got drunk and made his younger friend drive home. The guy he made drive the car is in trouble with the law because they got pulled over. I really don't want to see them dead on the road from an accident, or in jail from getting in a bar fight.

At what point did the WTS become overly controlling?
by jambon1 ini used to hear about good `ol days when people were happy dubs.
people had fun, did things together and it seems by the tone of the converstaions that there was less control over every tiny detail of the brothers lives.. i remember the 1st time someone told me as an unbaptised publisher that i would eventually be 'counceled' for not wearing a suit.
i was utterly stunned!

I noted that things also became a lot more controlling when the wts started admonishing us to be leary of the ones we call brothers and sisters, those in the cong. Before that we were mainly worried about " worldly association" but now it was more than that. We were to not associate with anyone whe decided we needed to mark within the cong. Cong picnics ceased and everything became an invite type thing, and then a lot of people began to be left out. I have heard people say " just b/c someone is reinstated does not mean i have to associate with them, I'm not forced to associate with anyone". The jws became a very unfriendly and unloving place. gone where the days when the weak were encourged and invited to gatherings to upbuild them. Now they were shunned. It became a sad place to be, with no one to assocate with. You were not supoosed to have worldy friends and if the jws deeemed you unworthy, then you also did not have jws friends. And they wonder why so many are depressed. now I am told that the inactive can be viewed as DA by the individual jws if they choose. now people divorce if the mate becomes weak. This did not used to happen. This are so paranoid they have shut out everyone.
I know what you're saying, wednesday. All the goodie two shoes in my hall will be at one sort of party, and if you're not on the BoE's good side, you just don't hear about it. I will never see some of my friends invited to certain gatherings ever again. They won't get an invite because people don't like them. I'll get an invite...so I can hang out with the gossipers and the boring kids.

JW and Home Schooling WHY, WHY, WHY????????
by Wordly Andre ini just heard that my nephew will not be attending high school, instead will be doing home schooling, why do jws pressure their kids into home schooling?
i really do love my nephew he is a bright kid, i think he would do really great in high school, and hopefully attend college, but i was informed yesterday that he will not be going to high school because its not safe, and besides he made the decision not to go.
i am sorry but he should go, i know what they got planned for him, home school and full time service, this is the time of his life where he needs to concentrate on his education, he will end up just like his mother, who also never attended high school, seems that when your totally lost into the society, covering all aspects of your life, that leaves you socially inept, depressed, and have a distorted view of the world.

SirNose586
The thought is admirable--keep kids out of high school and you can keep them from all the bad things that come with HS culture. Public schools are bad, especially in San Diego since there's an evident lack of funding. If you home school your kids, just do it for high school, or middle school. There are two kids in my hall who have been home schooled their whole lives. You have never met more boring, naive, humorless, little sensitive Watchtower salespersons in your life. They are so sheltered that I actually hope the sheltering goes on for the rest of their lives. If they get a job around normal people, watch out! They're gonna freak out and not want to work ever again. Those kids are socially stunted.
Home school your kids if you must, but make sure they know how to interact with society independently.
