Does that mean it would be ok for JWs to exchange gifts, wrapped in simple, clearly non-Christmas themed paper, on December 24 or 26 (or how about 22), so long as it was not done around a Christmas tree?

When is it ok to give gifts?
by Hoping4Change inso jw's don't "celebrate" christmas.
what exactly does it mean to "celebrate christmas"?
also, what are the dates (let's say between thanksgiving and new years) which jw's are forbidden to give/exchange gifts?

So JW's don't "celebrate" Christmas. What exactly does it mean to "celebrate Christmas"? Also, what are the dates (let's say between Thanksgiving and New Years) which JW's are forbidden to give/exchange gifts? (I know they can always receive them.) Is it during this entire stretch (Thanksgiving to New Years) that any gift giving would be viewed as 'celebrating' Christmas? Any 'light' on this subject would be appreciated.

JWs CAN CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS!
by Sirona inwhen a jw tells you christmas is pagan, therefore you shouldnt celebrate it, you can refer them to this article.
it is discussing wallpaper and other home decorations and what sorts are acceptable.. *** g76 12/22 14 are they idolatrous decorations?
so the christian needs to be primarily concerned about what?

Are there any scans available for all of these great references? Having copies of the article(s) these come from could prove invaluable in any Christmas discussion.

THE (predicted) FUTURE vs the ACTUAL FUTURE (in fiction)
by Terry ini think of flash gordon's bigscreen tv and dick tracey's wristwatch 2-way radio and i see there is a long wait for such technology to appear.in general, fiction writers are always a bit optimistic timewise.however, i'd posit it is the fiction writer's idea which sparks the forward motion on bringing to fruition the technology itself.the modern cellphone is mighty close to what captain kirk was using.
as far as i know, nobody anticipated the portable pc.
computers (in the early days) were hulking mammoths with blinking lights and a paper feed (for answers.

The Society's more permissive stance on blood fractions could kill my Mum!
by nicolaou inwe had my mum and dad down for a meal at the weekend.
me and mum have a kind of 'unspoken truce' going on where neither of us raise an issue in conversation that will lead to a discussion on any jw sensitive topics.
it's not perfect and it doesn't always work but at least we are maintaining a relationship of sorts.. anyway, knowing that this is the 'blood card' time of year i did take the chance on asking mum just what her personal stand on blood and fractions would be.

Don't these 'teachings on fractions' sound a little bit like 'medical advice' being given from the society, which is exactly what the Louderback-Wood article from last year uses to show why the society is 'responsible' for the medical decisions JWs make?

A reminder on Shunning family members again in the January 15th Watchtower!
by Gill injanuary 15th watchtower 2007 'remaining steadfast when a child rebels'.
'when discipline is severe'.
'if your child is unrepentant and is a baptized christian, he may receive the strongest form of discipline - being disfellowhipped from the congregation.

In what way does shunning (especially one's own children) imitate Jesus (or Jehovah)? Was David ever shunned? How would JW's answer these questions?

How well/far does the 'head of household' principle go? Dont they teach that the principle applies only so far as the HOH doesnt ask anything non-scriptual of the JW mate, at which point the JW mate should follow the bible and Jehovah, "as the WTBTS teaches"? It seems that anything an UBM may suggest that doesnt go along with current JW teachings could be deemed as 'non-scriptual' so a JW wife wouldnt have to go along with the HOH principle. Children are a good example. A HOH may say that a child is not to be raised with witness teachings, but the JW wife could claim this is 'unscriptual' and against her religious principles so she is allowed to ignore the HOH principle. I am guessing this gets sorted out differently for each case, but is there an 'official' JW stance on what a JW wife should do if their UBM doesnt or wont allow a child to be raised with JW teachings?

Perhaps there is another thread from the past on this, but how do families with one JW member (woman) and a non-member (male) cope with some of these issues with both parents being respectful (and non-insultive) of the others spirituality?
