Well they say that it would displease Jehovah if you attended a church but the real reason has to be that they worry that the witnesses will like the other church better and start going there. They might like the liturgy, or the sermon. They might find out that other churches too believe the world will end and that they are not the ones with exclusive rights to Jesus millenial reign.

Lets go to the church but stand outside
by Wordly Andre ini am so sick of this!
i have a split family, some non-jw and some jw, and ever since i was a young kid, ive noticed this silly fear of entering a church, i remember i must have been about 9 years old when my uncle died and my family went to the funeral, but we stood outside, and even at that young age i remember it felt wrong, like we were disrespecting my dead uncle and his family.
like ive wrote on this board before, i told my parents when at 15 i didnt want to go to meetings anymore and was never baptized, when i was 18 my great uncle died and at the funeral i went into the church for mass, when it was over i walked outside all the rest of my family were outside waiting, they all gave me dirty looks like i was just caught with a prostitute.

Meddling mother
by meems1000 ini've posted a few times on this site but really just like to read the posts.. i wanted to know if anyone can tell me about a book for teens that the dubs have.
my mother gave it to my 13 year old son and i'm really angry.
i have made it very clear i want nothing to do with those people and do not want my children exposed to it.

wow, that is the sort of thing that would really upset me if somebody tried that with my kids.I feel your frustration.
Does your son understand why you have no interest to be involved with the Jehovah's witnesses? You can explain that you are not upset because grandma gave him a book behind your back but because of what that book represents, an invitation to a religion that is closeminded and oppressive and what that religion did to you personaly. ( Mention the no birthday, no christmas, rules-that would squash any interest in JWism if I were a 13 yr old)

What outward signs of apostacy are evident in your house?
by AK - Jeff inif the elders came and inspected your home - what would they find?.
a casual look around reveals a box of "narnia" tissues on my desk, 12 or 14 non-witness translations of bibles on my shelves, many non approved novels [wifey's] on the reading table, plenty of 'apostate literature', a book or two on meditation, a hypnosis cd for weight loss, prob many toys that are not witness approved in the g-kids room, a half eaten birthday cake, a birthday balloon, xmas wrapping paper in the closet , a couple of r rated movies, music that is not acceptable.. that is just at first blush.
how is your house?

So,quick question-I do not mean to change the subject, the Narnia books are something the witnesses are allowed to read????

Proverbs 8:22
by Ade ini would like to know if there are trinitarians here and please could you share with me your thoughts on proverbs 8:22 - 36
where it appears to be teaching of jesus being bought forth by yahweh, as the beginning of his way (however not the begging for god has none ).
alternately non trinitarians put your views forward.

There is no english equivelant for the greek word "proskineo" so translators tend to apply their doctrinal views when they translate it. When Jesus said 'You shall worship the Lord your God and him only you shall serve" In Mathew 4:10 the greek word translated as "worship" is the word "proskineo".But of course as your friend pointed out it is also the same word in the parable of the unforgiving servant in Mathew 18: 23-35 where the servant prostrates himself in front of the ruler and then in front of the other servant who he owed money to. ( i personally believe that in the new testament people bow down either to worship or to beg for mercy but I m not a scholar so my opinion is irrelevant).
But look at what the "Kingdom interlinear translation of the greek scriptures " says in the foreword pg 10: To each major (greek) word we have assigned one meaning and have held to that meaning as far as the context permited" . If that was the case and since there is no english equivilant for that word they should have used maybe the word "prostrate themselves" or "bowed down" or something like that both for God, Jesus and whoever else it happened to and they would let the reader draw their own conclusion.
So if you want to go back to that argument with your friend bring up Revelation 5:13, 14
"And every creature that is in heaven and on earth and underneath the earth and on the sea and all the things in them, I heard them saying:"to the one sitting on the throne and to the lamb be the blessing and the honor and the glory and the might forever and ever"And the four living creatures went saying:"Amen!"and the elders fell down and worshipped. (New world translation) Sound like worship to me.
Also when several women fell down and wept or poured myrh on jesus' feet and wiped with their hair... that sound kind of like worship too...

"Before me there was no god formed nor shall there be after me" Isaiah 43:10
If Proverbs 8:22 are refering to Jesus being created that would be quite a huge contradiction...

JEHOVAH'S NAME IN NEW TESTAMENT
by dobbie inhi i've noticed in one of the posts that the jw bible put gods name into the new testament, and that it shouldn't be there.
i admit that i'm not the brightest pebble on the beach, but when i was studying they told me that the name jehovah was restored to where it was originally and that the nwt was the most accurately translated bible around.
just wondering how they have got away with doing that if they have blatantly inserted it where it bible scholars would immediately see it shouldn't be?also is there any such thing as the most accurate bible translation cos i'd like to try reading it my myself(without the aid of watchtower publications), but don't know now if i can trust nwt or not.

I like the new king James version because it flows well and it is easy to read while remaining literal(meaning word by word translated from the original).Obviously no translation is perfect. And you are right I would not trust the NWT especially in the rendering of John 1:1. Their translation defies greek grammar and syntax rules(I am greek so I should know)

The meaning of the word "version"
by elatwra ini have a question.
i was recently talking to some jw acquaintances and was told that the king james version, niv all the other translations i was mentioning are just "versions " of the bible whereas the nwt is a translation.
i was stunned and could not come back with an inteligent and scholarly reply(well aint that the pot calling the kettle black did not sound neither inteligent nor scholarly).
