maybe point out the pride and the audacity in actually thinking that they know everything.Point out that even in the bible oftentimes the acts of people are merely mentioned and judgement is not passed (especially in genesis). And then the JW come and claim to personally have all the answers. I find churches that say "we do not have all the answers yet" honest and refreshing...

When religious people get actual power in their hands the results are tragic. Whats the difference? True and undefiled religion is to take care of widows and orphans. Everything else is a matter of interpretation...

by Shepherd Book inthis is my first post here ever.
i was hoping some may be able to tell me the author(s) of any of the watchtower books - especially those from the last couple of decades.

While it's no doubt true that most of the members of the New World Translation Comittee had no training in Greek, I'm assuming that Gangas had received fairly extensive training in Biblical Greek. He was from Greece and it would be very hard for anyone who went to school in Geece to avoid studying the Greek of Homer or the New Testament. They're very proud of their linguistic heritage.
indeed, greeks(myself included) are annoyingly proud of their linguistic heritage. And yet I am very curious as to what Gangas' credentials were because if he was remotely honest with himself and read John 1:1 he would have known how their theological theories are baseless. It is greek at its simplest form. It does get more complicated though especially when Paul is the writer so if he had just studied Homer in high school he would be able to understand it but not necessarily produce an accurate translation as the variations in tenses and are subtle and theology is often based on the type of a hypothetical speech or verb tense -lets just say it gets really complicated. I studied ancient greek for two years and biblical greek for one. I can spot some mistakes or "tweeks" in the New world translation (or any other translation for that matter)but by no means am I qualified to translate it myself. I guess what I m saying it that understanding something and accurately translating exactly what the author meant ot say-and what the readers understood it to say at that time period is two completely different things.

Missing Books of JW bible
by Wordly Andre in- vitally important phrase completely removed.

The verses worldly Andre mentioned are not in the Nestle Aland new testament so there are legitimate reasons thwey are missing from the NWT. However Atlantis mentined a lot of great points where the NWT has messed with the original scripture. I 'd like to add two:
NIVLuke 23:43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."
NWT Luke 23:43 And he said to him"Truly I tell you today, you will be with me in paradise"
With a comma placement they manage to postpone paradise by a few thousand years- even though there are no commas in the original manuscripts!!!
NIV John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
NWT John 3:16For god loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten son in order that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destryed but have everlasting life.
Turning simple faith to a complicated religious experience. How do I get saved? Well first you begin with a bible study and if we deem you worthy you could go door to door............

The Greek phrase for "I am" is ego eimi. Here eimi is in the
present tense. However, in Greek, as in many languages such as French, a
present tense is often used as a past tense. For example, a French speaker
might want to say:"I went there ten years ago."
He would say:
"Je suis alle la il y a dix ans."
Literally:
"I am gone there it there has ten years."
The word for "am" is "suis" and is in the present tense. But by standard
usage, the past tense is almost always rendered by two constructions that
are something like "I am gone" or "I have gone" in EnglishI do not know french however in the greek you cannot translate a present tense as a past tense. It is a clear quotation of the septuagint who had god say " i am" at the burning bush. Why would they try to stone him instead of dismissing him as a lunatic?
57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" 58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

Brad Pitt support for gay marriage
by BizzyBee inwhat a clever way to avoid tying the knot!.
new york - brad pitt, ever the social activist, says he won't be marrying angelina jolie until the restrictions on who can marry whom are dropped.
"angie and i will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able," the 42-year-old actor reveals in esquire magazine's october issue, on newsstands sept. 19.. is brad pitt morphing into tom cruise, or is that just my imagination?.

Well, Brad did not make that one up.That was what Charlize Theron said when reporters asked her if she would marry Stewart Townsend a long time ago. If someone who has never been married says it it actually sounds like an intresting point of view. When someone who just got divorced says it, it sounds like a cop out. Because the prohibition of gay marriage did not stop them from marrying the first time. What, were they not as socialy aware then?

I think that if you do a couple of studies with them without saying much, they will think that the have you convinced. When they ask you how you like the book, tell them it's too simple and then step up your game and attack.

JWs at my door - A new Twist
by Amazing insince i gave testimony against the society almost three years ago, i have not had a single jw call at my door.
historically, when they did come, i would take different positions in debate, and not reveal my ex-jw background.
once they could see that i was not impressed by their message, and was able to seriously challenge them, they would start looking for a qick out.

Why has the BAPTISM Q changed?
by artcritic in"on the basis of this faith in god and in his provision for.
salvation, have you dedicated yourself unreservedly to do.
gods will henceforth as he reveals to you through.
-

So, now, like a pledge of allegiance to an authority, that is subscribed to as being binding as an oath, the revised baptismal questions make it clear to the new convert that he vows allegiance, not just incidently to jehover and jezzzuz, but to the ORGANISATION. If he sues, or threatens to, the WTS attorneys mail the malefactor a bulky package in the form of a legal brief wherin they cite the above Supreme Court quote, which permits the WTS to act as a "government" and "ecclesiastical court" They then remind the potential dissenter of his "oath" in baptism. So rather than face a potentially damaging court procedure, they invite the person to formally disassociate themselves
Then somebody should sue them for not making clear how binding the baptism "oath" is. Also they should not be allowed to baptize people under the age of 18 since they cannot making such a legaly binding decision yet.

(true) God
by elatwra ini was reading auld souls post on a different thread and i noticed that in 1st chronicles the nwt has the word (true) inserted in parenthesis in front of the word god.1 chronicles 15:25-16:6. and david and the older men of israel and the chiefs of the thousands came to be the ones walking along to bring up the ark of the covenant of jehovah from the house of obed-edom with rejoicing.
and it came about when the [true] god helped the levites while carrying the ark of the covenant of jehovah that they proceeded to sacrifice seven young bulls and seven rams.
and david was dressed in a sleeveless coat of fine fabric, and also all the levites carrying the ark and the singers and chenaniah the chief of the carrying by the singers; but upon david there was an ephod of linen.

ha-'elohim = (definite) article ha + elohim, meaning "god(s)". Literally, then, "the G/god(s)"
Ok im feeling a little dense this morning so bear with me as I am trying to understand hebrew. Ha+elohim means both the god and the gods, it could be both singular and plural. Am I getting this right?
