Computer problems: Jittering MP3s

i'm hoping someone can help me with this problem.. i just got a "new" computer at work, and it's a hunk of shit.

it's running winxp pro (the word "pro" is questionable imo).

i listen to mp3 cds at work, and i've never had a problem with winnt or win98.

Have you enabled digital CD audio for your CD-ROM?

In windows explorer right click on the drive and select properties, select hardware tab, select drive again, select properties, and again! and make sure the box is checked to enable digital cd audio.

Check you have the correct drivers for your sound hardware. If it is built in you may need to fit a sound card as onboard sound systems are usually naff.

There used to be a bus mastering setting on drives, called DMA, which usually had to be enabled but it seems to have disappeared on my system!

Also, are you reading off rewritable cds? Does it skip if you are reading off the hard disk? Just a thought, your CD drive may not like the brand of discs you are using. Mine absolutely refused to play re-writable discs even though they were supposed to be compatible. Also, I think some cd drives get so hot they inadvertantly 'format' writable discs!

CD drives are weird things, mine , for example, won't read after I've connected to the internet - I have to reboot to reset it everytime I've been on the net! Never have figured that one out.

...and, under oath and in court, this elder says that the witnesses do not use the word shun and would gladly help out a disfellowshipped person but are not able to discuss spiritual matters.. further, the elder repeatedly says under oath that disfellowshipping is a congregational matter, not a family matter; therefore, families would not be required to shun their disassociated or disfellowshipped loved ones.. excuse me if most of you have seen this already...i stumbled across it on my own.. grace.

i cannot get the link to copy here, but google "witnesses of jehovah video" and you will see about six down there is a link talking about an elder twisting the truth in court.

In fact, if a son was a drunkard and a glutton, his parents were to bring him before the judges, and if he was unrepentant, the parents were to share in the just executing of him, ‘to clear away what is bad from the midst of Israel.’ (Deuteronomy 21:18-21) You can appreciate that this would not have been easy for them. Imagine, too, how the wrongdoer’s brothers, sisters, or grandparents felt. Yet, their putting loyalty to their righteous God before family affection could be lifesaving for them.

A question about the ladies

ok firstly i have nothing against ladies, especially any of the lovely ones here - some of whom i recently had the pleasure of meeting in the flesh at englishmans bbq, and i must say what a great group of girls we have here!.

anyway back to my question, a number of times i have noticed that some women seem to go quiet on you rather than tell you what they feel.

almost like pushing you away because they can't speak about whatever it is.

I've not had many relationships so I'm guessing here.

I would say men are just as likely to do the same thing, and I think it's to do with feelings of guilt...or maybe they are feeling unhappy but just can't articulate why. Perhaps a person gets like that in order to provoke the other partner into breaking up the relationship so the responsibility isn't theirs. I personally find it easier to be dumped than be the dumper because I can cope with my own pain but find it traumatic to think about pain I'd caused others.

An interesting question but I would think there are multiple answers.

Time is their enemy

tick, tick, tick.. the governing body is dying one by one, faster now.. young people who thought they would never see themselves getting old now take meds for cholesterol, alzheimers, diabetes, blood pressure.. the end isn't here.. tick, tick, tick.. kids who walked away from the wt after being warned that they would die like a dog in the streets instead are very successful young people with real jobs, families, and assets.. empty threats stop having an effect.

apathy sets in.

automatons attend the meetings.

Abso-bloody-lutely it is. Time is their greatest enemy.

I remember many years ago, when I realised the JWs had no more idea about God’s plans than the ant on my sandwich, telling an elder that the ‘generation of 1914’ WOULD pass away. It was inevitable. And sure enough it did, with the Society forced to readjust the meaning of scripture with the passage of time. That elder told me the scripture was absolutely clear and irrefutable. He is still an elder; he is still waiting for that which will never come.

I feel sorry for my ex-wife, who pushed out a man who loved her for the sake of her religion. In 40-50 years time she will die a bitter and lonely old woman still waiting for Armageddon to solve her problems.

Time IS their greatest enemy. But it will be a slow death.

Finally out of Hiding

well i finally came out and told my parents i did not believe in the wts doctrines.. for me the last straw was seeing honesty's simple clear proof of the wrongness of 607.

'course i couldn't remember all the refs last night but now i've printed them out.. told them about the ngo thing.

of course they said the "ebul 'postates" were twisting the whole thing.. my dad tried to "reason with me" thusly:.

End result: You KNOW this is the truth, you just don't want to live by it!

That's the bottom line for ALL JWs. In the end, there's no honourable way out - they will demonize you no matter what you say.

I don't think they can DF you for simply stopping believing, but if you come out strongly saying you don't believe then you will be classed as disassociating yourself.

Play it clever and talk 'doubts and issues' but don't be definite if you don't want to be kicked out. It will give you time to prepare to leave on your own terms.

Shocking Announcement: Society feels Armaggedon coming this year?

a rumor alert indeed, but it could be related to the distribution of kingdom news no.37, "false religions end is near.".

the following is posted from e-watchman's forum.. make of it what you will, but in light of all the rhetoric about "deliverance at hand" and "independent thinking", nothing would surprise me anymore.. http://e-jehovahs-witnesses.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1502&st=0 we posted about an announcement it was only local to our cong.

however we have found out that there is going to be an announcement sometime in september and it is supposed to be shocking.

It depends on how you define 'special'. What is special to them will utterly bore us - like an announcment that there will be a 'special' one day assembly.

I don't think they would be so stupid as to announce Armageddon is here, that would really be shooting themselves in the foot. They will be looking to the long term as the upper echelons of the Org know Armageddon ain't coming anytime soon.

Men and their BBQs

this is so true ladies.... as i am sure you know from first-hand experience!.

when a man volunteers to do the bbq the following chain of events are put into motion:.

routine:the woman buys the food; andthe woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, makes dessert; andthe woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand.here comes the important part: the man places the meat on the grill.the woman goes inside to organise the plates and cutlery; andthe woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning.

I've always hated barbecues - to me it's always meant hot, burning sun, flies, burnt but raw meat, uncomfortable outdoor furniture and rice salad.

I always felt the same. But the trick is to light the BBQ an hour before you need it and let it settle down. My brother did one last week and he put the food on 3 minutes after dowsing the BBQ with petrol and it was too fierce - so the meat was charcoal on the outside and raw inside. Meat has to be cooked carefully, long and slow.

Also, I do BBQs in the evening, after a scorching day, when it's still warm but not really sunny (not that we get many such days in the UK!).

I buy and prepare all the stuff myself but I don't bother with salad anymore, nobody is interested, they just want MEAT at a BBQ. Not a balanced meal I admit but hey, it's only once in a blue moon! I put some chips 'n' dips out while the meat is cooking.

I do everything - cutting and buttering the rolls, getting the plates, nibbles, sauces, drinks and entertaining the kids. And I clean it all up afterwards. I'm one of those guys that likes the kitchen to myself so I guess that extends to the outside as well!

BBQs for me are an event, not just a meal; a time for family and friends to bathe in the warm afterglow of a cracking day and celebrate what it is to belong to such a great group of people.
