Baumgartner's pitching was epic, but the Giants don't have a lock, they won two in a row already in this series, it could happen again.

Using the "C-Word" With My Wife
by breakfast of champions inmonths ago, i commented on another thread about a strategy i was using to introduce my wife to the way cults work--without using the word "cult" and scaring her away.
here's my first comment on that thread:.
i pulled hassan's bite model off the internet and imported it into my word processor.

Great job on that. I would think that once a person see that the manipulations of the Watchtower for what they it would become very hard to keep attending meetings. The meetings exist simply to reinforce the mind control, but it only works on the uninformed.

I don't understand the psyche of JW
by bobld inthe majority have good jobs, drive newer vehicles, have nice homes,go on vacations.all in all they have the smarts.. however, rwhen it comes to their religion, they are dummer than a sack of hammers.they drive around in circles to get two hours of service time.they can't differentiate what the fds/gb say is from jehovah god, when in reality it is the stuff that comes out of a horses ass.what the horse eats(as it were food at the proper time from the gb) comes out of the horse as manure(shit sounds better) as a loving provision from jehovah.. .

What I don't get is that reasonably intelligent people will not believe in evolution, dispite massive evidence for it, but believe in demons, despite zero evidence for it. I get it in a way, because I was a dub, I understand the Watchtower's manipulations, but most of the time I was in we didn't have the internet. Now that all JWs have access to the internet why are they still choosing to remain ignorant?

Dear brothers.
For medical reasons, I no longer wish to be known as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. I am allergic to hypocrisy, I find I can no longer digest lies and I am pedophile intolerant. My doctor advices me that I must be in a supportive, gossip free environment at all times, and, a I find sitting through hours of meetings gives me a sore backside. Going door to door to tell people they will be destroyed by God just makes me wheeze, so that's out, and the thought of going to a summer convention cause me to break out in hives.
My doctor suggests I engage in regular enjoyable recreation, have freedom of thought and speech and make my own choices in entertainment. For life long good health I am instructed to make personal education and employment goals and to take doses of science and logic, which means I must give up pretending I don't believe in evolution.
So, as you can see, being a Jehovah's Witness just isn't good for me any more.
Sincere yours
Lisa Rose

It was weird, I thought something was going on with Voglesong, I could tell by his face his head wasn't in it, he just looked weird, and then he did a meltdown. Hopefully he feels better knowing it didn't hurt his team any. We all have those moments when the stress gets to us.

Do you believe that we are living in the last days, and why?
by new light init has been a long time.. thanks to jw.org, i was reading some jw material (what does the bible teach i believe).
it was the first time reading a "book study" book in many years and i was blown away by the controlling, cultish writing.
this question especially struck me as manipulative: do you believe that we are living in the last days, and why?.

Sorry New Light, we did get off the point of your topic. Yes, the Watchtower is very good at using leading questions to direct your thinking. It's a subtle manipulation. In politics it's known as a push poll. A pollster asks leading questions that are designed to push the person towards a particular response. It can be very effective.
Here is an example from Wikipedia:
Perhaps the most famous use of push polls is in the 2000 United States Republican Party primaries, when it was alleged that George W. Bush's campaign used push polling to torpedo the campaign of Senator John McCain. Voters in South Carolina reportedly were asked "Would you be more likely or less likely to vote for John McCain for president if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?" This hypothetical question seemed like a suggestion, although without substance. It was heard by thousands of primary voters. [8] McCain and his wife had in fact adopted a Bengali girl.
The Watchtower is really good at this kind of thing. They even use pictures. They might have a picture of an atom bomb explosion, while asking "Is this world doomed?". The assumption is that of course it is, because we have atom bombs, we must be.

Mental Disorders among JW's
by Blackfalcon98 inhi everyone, im begining to notice patterns of mental issues in the congregations and among the witnesses as a group.
do you think this is a trend in the entire world or is it exagerated in this organization?.
.

It's a cult, so it's not surprising that it attracts some mentally unstable people. I don't recall there being a much higher number of people with severe mental illness, but those people were probably weeded out through disfellowshiping. I knew of one brother that was disfellowshipped, he was hearing voices, they thought he was demonized, it seemed like schizophrenia to me. I also knew a woman who seemed bipolar who was disfellowshipped for adultery.
If you are stalking about milder forms of mental issues like depression, it sure seemed, at least anecdotally, there was a lot. It isn't surprising to me that an organization that demands so much but gives back so little would cause a lot of depression.
So many things are not really supportive of the individual, like:
High demands on personal time for meetings and field service
An environment that constantly emphasizes the bad in the world
Elders that are not trained in mental health issues, but think they are
A culture that doesnt allow criticism of the hierarchy
Secret judicial committee that harshly judge and punish
Lack of personal choice in dress and grooming
An environment that discourages higher education and setting personal career goals
Entertainment and recreation are frowned upon
Women are demeaned and given no responsibilities in the congregation
Children made to sit through hours of boring meetings every week
Congregations offer little social support, people gossip and have cliques
People are judged and "marked" by others over minor personal choice issues
Families are split apart by disfellowshipping
Friendships are conditional
With all that, the question isn't why are so many depressed, it's why isn't every one.

People naturally have a me centric point of view. If you lived during the time of the crusades or the bubonic plague you might think you were in the last days also. Charles Russel though he was in the last days. People tend to worry and focus on the bad, so it's easy to things couldn't get much worse. The reality is that some things are bad, some things are pretty good. Your chances of dying from disease or war are probably fairly low right now. Crime is decreasing in many areas.
Don't say that to a JW though, they have been brainwashed to believe life is hopeless and things are terrible. Of course if you are a JW your life probably is terrible.
