I believe the culture is very similar. I knew an ex Mormon, she was a born in, but knew at an early age it was not for her. At 16, she got a job, had a friends mom help her rent an apartment, and just moved out on her own. Tough girl, she didn't want to get married at 18 and pump out a bunch of babies like all her sisters. Her mom would not even speak to her, but sent the elders around (this was years later) . Her roommate told them she was turning tricks down on Colfax (known prostitution area) I had a good laugh about that, she was actually a flight attendent.

Just visited ex-Mormon site
by Phizzy infor some reason i thought i'd have a look see at an ex-mormon site.
very similar experiences, difficulties, pain etc for them , as us.. one girl made a statement that really stood out, she said that for a born-in , especially one whose family had been in for years , it was like " losing citizenship in a country that contained all of your history, all of your culture, and all of your heritage.".
i think that is so true, we leave and are immigrants in a strange land and culture that we know nothing about, no wonder it takes us a while to adjust..

Why aren't you an Atheist?
by Bloody Hotdogs! inlong time lurker, first time poster.. .
i'm an ms (accounts servant) in a large congregation in canada.
over the last several years i've faught a hard-won battle to rid my mind of all religous and supernatural beleifs.

I have not really been able to figure out what I am. Athiest seems to require a conviction I do not feel. Agnostic doesn't seem to fit either. I believe there is something out there bigger than ourselves, although what, I cannot say. You would think after 12 years out of the cult I would have a better idea, but after being so darn sure I had the *only* true religion, then finding out it was all a lie, I find I am OK with some ambiguity.

How many of you have lost your faith on JWN
by Most Noble injust curious, if anyone had lost faith whilst on jwn and do u think it is an honorable experience?..
-

I had already been out quite a while before I found JWN. It did help me resolve a few lingering questions, and it was great finding others who had been through the same thing. I am glad it is here.

How Many Hours Did You Spend Going to the Meetings and Ministry?
by God_Delusion ini spent far too many.
in fact, i recently created a spreadsheet and documented how many hours i spent in total per week.
it's so depressing.

I once did a calculation like that. As a working mom, doing all that was needed for my family (cooking, cleaning, homework, etc) plus all the Society required, I would have maybe 6 hours or so in the week to call my own. I think I kind of gave up a little then. I didn't think that was enough for any person to have any kind od happy life. I stayed for another ten years, but I stoped caring if I missed meetings, or field service. I just did the minimum.

I always thought the rumors about homosexuality were spread by the GB themselves to deflect attention from the real reason. One comment in the right ear and it would be all over Watchtowerdom by the next day. The dubs do love a juicy piece of gossip.

You Know You Are In The Wrong Religion When:
by Vanderhoven7 inhere is a list i've started...but hope will be added to.. .
you know you are in the wrong religion when:.
1. the all important question is not: "do you believe in the lord jesus christ?"....but....

You know you are in the wrong religion when you are taught to distrust your own thoughts.
and you are told to shun your own family.
and you are told to kill yourself or a child by refusing a blood transfusion.
When you are told "A generation" can be more than "one generation".
When you were told you didn't need college because you would not have time for a career in this system and now you a card carrying member of AARP.

can't make this up
by pontoon inso this 70 something yr old brother, ex bethelite, ex spec pioneer, current pioneer with over 50 yrs of full time service is lamenting he might have to step down as an elder because he is computer ignorant.
i guess the org uses the internet to communicate with elders and having internet access is required of elders.
anyway he's going to dunkin donuts with his wife and he sees free wifi.

My in laws are in their 80's, they each have their own computers, Internet access etc.
I do feel sorry for older ones that have never had one and now feel left out, but there are classes out there. I volunteer for a program that reaches out to the elderly and helps them get computer training, if they want that. We help them develop any skill they would like to pursue.

We want you to feel guilty!
by solomon inthis is another fine spiritual gem from the january 2013 study edition.. .
as the great tribulation nears, we do not want to be plagued with such anxious thoughts as these:'could i have done more in god's service?
didn't i pioneer when i had the opportunity?
-
LisaRose
That was the worst thing about this religion. The constant unremitting guilt. You could never do enough, or be good enough for the WTBTS. Finally I just gave up. What was the point? No matter what you did you felt guilty. I couldn't believe God intended us to feel this way. So goodbye JWs and guilt, hello happy life.

Weird stuff that only an exJW would know
by biblecheck ini was thinking tonight about all the wierd stuff that i viewed as totally normal being brought up as a jw.... here's my list.... - eating broken easter eggs after easter was not a sin.
- your car always had to be clean in time for the co visit.
- being assigned to the car park at a convention, with a walkie talkie, meant you had powerful connections.. - the amount of lines and hand writing on your sunday watchtower, spoke volumes of your spirituality.

If you buy things at a garage sale, they could be demonized and you will then have to burn them.
Smufs toys are demonized and will get up and walk out of the kingdom hall.
