ever since my sister gave me an " awakening," i have been somewhat obsessed with the failings of the religion i was born into.

i am especially outraged at the article i read about how the elders are supposed to deal with accusations of sexual abuse (jwfacts.com/watchtower/paedophelia.php).

i myself suffered sexual and emotional abuse from a family "friend"/ministerial servant in a neighboring congregation.

I would think you would only have a case if the elders had some knowledge of his behavior prior to his harming you. Otherwise, it's not something the Watchtower could have prevented. Conti won because the elders knew about her abuser, as he had been accused in a prior case, but they still allowed him to go out door to door with her.

If the scumbag that molested you had later gone on to molest someone else, then they might have a case, depending on the circumstances. But you should contact an attorney to be sure, laws vary from place to place.

Your thoughts on Halloween , yes, no or maybe ?

well its that time again when the ghouls come out to play.

i personally think halloween is a bit irresponsible and inappropriate from a sociological perspective.. there's something about the intent of frightening young impressionable children minds with frightening objests.

and feeding them candy which most likely cause tooth decay and stomachs is irresponsible activity conducted by adults.

I am totally for it. It's a big deal in my neighborhood, we get 600 trick or treaters on average. Their aren't actually many children here, but it has gotten a reputation as a good place to trick or treat, so we have just gone with it. We decorate and wear costumes and sit on our porch and hand out candy. My husband and I are minions this year. We love seeing the little ones in their costumes.

I think the scary aspect of it is fine, you are showing your kids that things can look scary, but they are just pretend, it's a way for them to confront their fears and learn to deal with them, I think it fills a need. Of course if you have a fearful child you just don't take them out at night, there are plenty of daytime activities for the little ones. I can tell you that every child I see is having a really, really good time.

As for the candy, I don't think something you do once a year is going to harm you, it's the day to day sugar consumption that will do you in. being able to indulge once a year is one of the fun things about it. We keep buying more and more candy hoping to have a few left, but that hasn't happens yet, we spent $60 on candy this year.

Disfellowshipped at a funeral

recently at a funeral for an active jw, death was sudden and tragic.

was surprised that that one of the disfellowshipped children of the deceased was comforted by the jw's at the funeral.

i would say the majority hugged and said a few short words to the disfellowshipped child on the recieving line to comfort the family.

Yeah, I was surprised to get a hug last year from my uber strict JW sister-in-law, who shuns her own children, at my brothers memorial service. It seems that no matter how much much they have been conditioned to shun, there is a part of them that doesn't want to.

It makes sense to me that older people would have more problems with changes in the organization than younger people. I am only slightly younger than this group, I find making changes is harder than it used to be, when you like something you dont want to give it up, you want things to stay the same.

They have had more time with the organization as it used to be, now they are expected to junk all that and accept this shiny new organization, It must be very distressing. The religion they believed in doesn't really exist anymore. It's kind of sad though because the fact that the religion has morphed into this slick new marketing engine proves it was never the truth in the first place. But that is probably not something they could get their head around.

I feel bad for them.

The rigid, outdated biblical stance on sex outside of marriage is a prescription for sexual problems. Masturbation is forbidden, which create problems as it forces young people to marry quickly for sexual relief, often before they are mature and can make a rational choices, and without fully getting to know their partner. Also, many young women who do not masturbate do not know what turns them on, so will struggle reaching sexual climax, and their inexperienced partner often will not figure it out either.

If two people are sexually incompatible, they will not find out until after marriage, at which points they are stuck, trapped in an unfulfilling marriage. Prudish attitudes about sex keep people from enjoying their sexuality and finding a suitable partner. A fulfilling, vibrant sex life is possible for everyone, but not if they are taught that sex is dirty unless it is between two married people.

grew up in east la in a bad neighborhood to a black mother and white father.

i never knew my father because he died in a car accident when i was a few weeks old.

my mother converted as a jw soon after when two sisters came to her door and offered her comfort, which was something she needed.

I hope your mother appreciates the sacrifice you made for her. I am sorry you had to give up your dream, that is really, truly sad. If I had my life to live over I would have left the religion when I was 18 and not looked back, you have to live your own life.

Ugh, that was painful to watch. The word apostate isn't even in the bible, so how could anyone have warned of them? And "wolves in sheep's clothing" are people who pretend to be believers but who are not. Apostates, otherwise known as people who left their former religion, are open about what they believe.

The only wolf in this scenario is rubber Lips Lett and his partners in crime.

Reasons Santa must be God:

He delivers presents to children all over the earth in one night, so obviously he is all powerful.

Millions believe in their hearts that he exists.

He has a white beard, so obviously he is old, so he must be very wise, therefore God.

I cannot accept a world without Santa, I know in my heart he must exist.

The poem that starts "twas the night before Christmas" speaks of him, it's been around a long time, many have read it, proving his existence

He has a magic sleigh and flying reindeer, and thousands of elves working for him, therefore God

And the number one thing that proves Santa must exist:

No one can prove he doesn't .

i insisted it was handwritten.

a few days go by and i decided to write this woman back.

Her "friendship" was conditional on you continuing to study with her and progress in the religion. She would eventually have dumped you as a friend if you did not progress to meeting attendance and baptism, and you could never get baptized as a practicing gay person. It's hard to lose someone you are friends with, but it's probably best for you to move on.

In my experience, as a former member for thirty years, the long term outlook is not good. Being in a religion like this, her thoughts and emotions have been manipulated. She may be in love with you, but eventually the guilt over the relationship will get to her. If she does stay with you, her religion will be a factor in your relationship.

If you get married, she will feel obligated to raise your children in the religion. They discourage higher education, have strict requirements for attendance and door to door work. They do not allow blood transfusions, voting, holidays or association with non believers. They believe they are the only true religion, all other people will he destroyed at Armageddon, which will he soon.

I get that you love her and you think you can make this work out, but you should know what you are up againet. It's a cult, and they also are highly critical of other Christian religions, especially Catholicism.
