Disco Banned?

i am a bit too young to remember this but, was disco really banned by the jw's??

?

I remember visiting Bethel in the early 80's and there was a standing Friday night dance at a local club attended by many Bethelites. And didn't they find a secret disco in the basement somewhere? I don't think that was a Bethel legend...I seem to think that really happened...then they clamped down on all of it.

I remember in the 70's having a garage party with several elders in attendance...we did the twist and limbo...it was just a dance party for chissakes! INNOCENT as can be...just dancing! Then some young OR newbie gets out a mag article and goes to other elders and raises a big o stink. I think that was in '72.

But in the long run...it sure didn't stop any of us from going out and dancing, thankfully.

ARREST IN JONBENET RAMSEY CASE!

boulder, colo. - a man suspected in the slaying of 6-year-old beauty queen jonbenet ramsey nearly a decade ago was arrested wednesday in thailand, the district attorney said in the long-awaited breakthrough in one of the nation's most lurid unsolved murder cases.

district attorney mary lacey said the arrest followed several months of work.

I sure hope that DNA matches...ugh.

As far as the Ramsey's are concerned, Patsy I'm sure was sedated during the hoopla, (you'd HAVE to be!!), I know I would have been. That would account for what seemed like an unemotional demeanor. IMHO. It disturbed me at first when the father moved her and took off the tape over her mouth (ugh...just awful), and tried to remove her constraints. But an FBI profiler last night said it is normal that a parent would want to release the child, not thinking about crime scene contamination, that would be way to methodical in a time of absolute crises and horror.

I hope crime agencies all over will learn from this horrendous bungling by the Boulder police department.

i've been reading here for a while now.

i kept having problems logging in...so i hope that is over now.. i'm a fader, 5 years this summer.

my family came in in the 30's, and most all still are in... po's, elders, reg pios, pillars...you know the story.

Did anyone meet brother Ted Jaracz, what's he like?

He was our CO in the late 60's and gave my baptism talk.

I sat at his table twice when I visited Bethel. He did not converse at all. Nuttin. He looked mortified one day with us all sitting there waiting until his wife came. I think he is shy on top of being old and puritanical. He gave the closing remarks at our DC a few years ago. It was clinical at best.

We were spoiled because we had Sidlik several times at our DC, as well as he was a visitor to our hall over the years. When he talked it felt like he was giving you a hug, and I think he really meant to. One day he said in that booming voice "You people are BEAUTIFUL!! God bless you!!"

Celebrating holidays

just wondering if you still abstain from celebrating christmas birthdays etc or if you do celebrate them how long did it take to feel comfy with doing it after you'd left the jws?i'm fading at the moment but although me and hubby have talked about spending xmas with our nonjw families and i told him i was going to start sending bday cards to my family, the thought of it scares me like its a big huge sin.does it ever feel natural to celebrate holidays?i used to love all that sort of thing before i was a witness but when my mum and stepdad wished me happy bday last month it felt really odd and i was uneasy.i find it v confusing cos i can sort of see that jesus wasn't born in dec. but maybe he can have 2 bdays like the queen!also not being able to send fathers day cards this year was the final straw for me i felt so bad about it so i have lots of making up to do but just hope i can enjoy it all without feeling bad.

i know they say some bday things have pagan origins but there are things jws can have or do that also are pagan.wedding rings for example.thanks

Well I just love the warm and fuzziness of it all.

I remember a few years ago writing what I thought was a brilliant witness regarding holidays and birthdays to a workmate. Oh I was so proud, the reasoning was so sound...all about "loving truth" blah blah blah. And I'll never forget the look on his face, it was like "but I like to just go to a party and have a fun time" type look. And I remember wondering, where did I miss?

Now...fa getaboutit! I love the holiday season...but I'm not there just yet with Xmas. I get gifts for my workmates around that time and I genuinely LOVE doing it. I am doing birthdays...it felt REALLY odd at first. But I know that as far as my workmates are concerned, it is that they are thinking of you. I am always touched by the little think they give you, and you know they saw it and thought about you. I think that is what it is all about really, just honoring your life here on earth.

Some my family, ones that are no longer JW. have started the Family Day in ernest. We go absolutely crazy...I guess it was all those years of no presents. EAch year I tell them we can pick names...but it seems we all just like the chore of finding something for each other. And wrapping...and well the kids just go nuts...and it is such a happy time.

Ease into it or jump right in with both feet...do what is right for you.

Regrets of Being Brought up as a Witness

ive never really been one to say a whole lot against the organisation, even though i was really unhappy in the years leading up to getting out of it, i still think theres so many good, peace loving and genuine people in it.

that said i was brought up as a witness and sometimes feel like ive been robbed of a true childhood.. my dad was a lot older than my mum, and was almost 50 when i was born.

he was the po in the cong and being a witness was, and still is, everything to him.

I echo the thoughts of those here, if you have the courage to make the break when you are young, the happier you will be.

"Regrets...I've had a few" also. I was raised VERY strictly, three scripture sermons presenting the Babylon book when I was 5, in the TMS at the same time (how cute...NOT). I realize now I was too intimidated to follow my heart as I grew older...that "New World carrot" along with the fear of Armageddon did a number on me.

I don't want to feel regretful, but the fact is I do at times, and it is probably mixed with some anger, and it is for the wasted years. I'm not dead yet...of course...there is plenty of life left to live But there is no reason on God's green earth we shouldn't explore life to the fullest, learn the lessons as they come...and stand before our judge on the day with the glowing feeling that "I did it MY way." The anger is lesser and lesser as time goes on, and I work at that. But the freedom of worship, being able to question whatever you want...not being judged by the hours on your report slip makes it easier and easier.

I wish you strength for the journey.

Hi all! I've been reading here for a while now. I kept having problems logging in...so I hope that is over now.

I'm a fader, 5 years this summer. My family came in in the 30's, and most all still are in... PO's, elders, reg pios, pillars...you know the story. I've enjoyed everybody's candor on this website. While I stopped and understandably lost quite a few friends, almost all of my association is still with JW's. I honestly have not had the time to pursue friendships elsewhere.

We have a unique journey those of us who have taken the plunge to dare to question the almighty Tower. I applaud Simon and all have provided this place...and I'm telling you...your humor just saves the day sometimes.

Thanks again to all the contributors that keep us up to date with what's going on.
