There must be a lot of joy in Columbia Heights. These properties will now become tax resources as they are converted into private and public use. And the residents and business people will be relieved to have people living there that will contribute to the community rather than to the Watchtower.

How does 1914 + 31/2 = 1919 ?
by UnConfused ini know it must but.... satan is cast down in oct 1914. revelation says in 3 1/2 years jesus inspection comes;.
oct 1915 = 1 year.
oct 1916 = 2 years.

did he appoint the people?

Someone should have told Rutherford that there was a FDS appointed by God in 1919. He ruled the organization as a tyrant and allowed no disagreement with his opinions and rules while he was at the helm. The only reason he identified the FDS as a "class" was to take the title away from Russell.

by kwr ini was watching one of the extras on the knocking dvd and a woman commentator talked about a scandalous letter from the jw's to hitler and the nazi party in 1933. does anyone know where i can read this letter at?.

The Watchtower has tried to make a feeble excuse for the "Declaration." It even tried to blame the leadership at the German Bethel for its contents. However, at the time, Rutherford saw fit to publish it in the 1934 Yearbook without any disclaimers. So, one can only assume that it had his full approval at the time. One has to wonder how many German JWs that were taken to the concentration camps were involved in the distribution of that tract in the campaign that followed the announcement.
However, the letter to Hitler was a blatant attempt to compromise Watchtower "neutrality" to save its property. There is simply no excuse for such detestable conduct.

I used the same argument in the early 1950s when I became a JW. I just knew that conditions in the world couldn't get any worse than they were. Now, over 50 years later I look back and smile at my naivite.
C.T. Russell used the same argument when he dated 1799 - 1914 as the "time of the end." Russell was wrong in spite of his sincerity. We look back now on those dates prior to WW I as the "good old days."
Christians down through the centuries thought their time was the "end time" because of terrible conditions that existed that seem to fulfill the same Bible prophecies. But they were wrong, too.
The Watchtower has a deplorable record concerning "end time" dates: 1799, 1874, 1878, 1914, 1918, 1925, 1943, 1975. This should, at least, raise a flag of caution among its members that the Watchtower Society has not been a reliable source of prophetic interpretation.

All the "proof" is in the interpretation of the events by the Watchtower. JWs did not see Christ. They did not see Satan. There was no visible evidence that Jehovah selected the Watchtower. (In fact, the organization was pretty much in disarray at the time in 1919.) Since Russell had predicted that the Bible students would be raptured in 1914 or thereabout, many were disappointed when nothing happened. So a few of the diehard faithful relied on Rutherford and his interpretation of scripture to explain away Russell's failures. The shifting of the date from 1874 to 1914 was one way. And the identification of 1914 as the beginning of the time of the end instead of its end was another.
It reminds me of what happened to the Adventist movement after Miller's failure. Some said that Christ had come to the heavenly sanctuary (invisibly) and was "tarrying" until he came on the clouds to render judgment. It was a convenient interpretation that could not be proven. SDA church still holds to this explanation, I believe.
It will be interesting to see how the Watchtower will deal with the 1914 date as we approach the 100 year anniversary in 2014.

I have no doubt about the bavery and sacrifice that individual Jehovah's Witnesses made when they went to the Nazi concentration camps because of their faith. And the Holocaust museums have made recognition of this. However, it should be clear that the Watchtower organization demonstrated its cowardice and compromise in an effort to save its property in Magdeburg, Germany in 1933. This disgraceful conduct is an indelible stain on the history of the Watchtower Society.

One has to understand that the teachings of the Watchtower Society were evolving at this early time. Rutherford was introducing new thoughts with regard to the "end" from what Russell had taught. He had to destroy the influence that Russell had among the Bible Students. By making new pronouncements, he was erasing the importance of Russell as "the faithful and discreet slave." However, many who remained faithful to Russell left the organization at the time.
To me it is significant that JWs always point to events that can't be proven to "prove" that the organization has "the truth." Examples: 1914 as the date of Christ's INVISIBLE presence, 1914 as the date of Satan's ouster from heaven. 1919 Date that God selects the Watchtower to represent Him. etc. This is one of the reasons that JWs have to cling to these dates even though no real evidence is forthcoming.
