WELCOME MIL!
*****
Why don?t you currently have a relationship with your daughter or grandkids? You can say it?s because of me or the world or blame your daughter or the grandkids and probably garner a great deal sympathy within the WTS. Then eventually that will fade?you will grow older as we all do?you will eventually need help?and who will be there to take care of you? The WTS old folks home? Who?s kidding whom? Your family?the daughter you shunned.
******
this is my situation almost exactly! my mother shunned me during different periods of my life even when I was an active JW! people are always dumbfounded at how she treats me and my siblings and like your MIL, she gets much sympathy from the crazies in the organization that can't see the situation for what it truly is. she doesn't even know for sure that I am out of the org. but she has shunned me already for so long that it wouldn't matter either way.
good for your wife for questioning and getting away from the dysfunctinal relationship with her mother.
your letter is very good, however I don't think it will make your MIL question anything. It will probably make her harsh stand even more determined. people like her have closed hearts and minds. I'm sure writing it made you feel much better though.

Say You're a Bethelite & Monitoring JWD - How Would You Feel About THESE??
by Seeker4 ini'm talking about the new posters, like kitten whiskers, who started posting today (hope this works: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/120817/1.ashx).
and it seems like we're getting a few like this nearly every day.
people who were raised jws, really worry that they are doing the right thing in leaving, yet who have been made to feel not good enough by the wts, who felt they never measured up, who struggled with it, but came to realize that what they'd been brought up to believe was just not the truth.. the same stories are told over and over again, and they come from sincere, good people - not whiny, fault-finding apostates like the rest of us riffraff around here!

*****I hope you dad stays in for a while. Recently a Sister spent much time describing why she wanted to go to college so that she would be able to support her young children. I fully supported her decision and career path, she is pursuing a RN Degree. She calls me the liberal elder. Maybe your dad can help others as well. If one can push the limits somewhat the "truth" can be rewarding experience. I would leave but have no idea where to go and I worry about those left behind. Give your dad a hug if you see him and tell him to keep up the fine work.*****
I think for most of us, and like my dad you get to a point where you can't stand the negative atmosphere any longer and it starts to be detrimental to your own sanity and physical health so you have to leave. I do agree with you though that as long as you are able to you should stay in because you will probably be able to help someone out. I know I defied the "recommended way" many times because it just felt wrong to treat people some ways the society says we should. who knows how that may pay off one day.
I feel for you. I can imagine the frustration you must feel trying to get people to see a more loving way to deal with people. -

your sentiments are just like my dad right now. He is an elder also and is mentally out of the org. though still going through the motions. He feels like he wants to be able to help from within - or at least help some out before he leaves.
as far as bethelites monitoring this site - they most likely assign the biggest dweebs around to monitor this site, (if they even do that.) maybe a few *monitors* will get out, but not likely IMO.
Welcome to the board Zarco!
nice to have another elder around here for your perspective.

for Christians: How did you decide on the Bible?
by BlackSwan of Memphis infor those of you who are christian and accept the bible as nothing less then the word of god, how did you come to that conclusion?
how much research did you do into the bible to get to the point where you sat back and said, this is it?
or was it zero research and more a leap of faith?.

BSofM-
I don't believe the bible to be inspired but I do think there is some sage old words in it. I don't think it's any greater than other holy books I've read. I do have to say that reading the bible (a different translation than NWT) when I was first exiting the org. did help me tremendously. I read the gospels with an open mind and found beauty in the scriptures that I never saw before. However, that was the beginning of my journey and my journey has not left me a xian by todays standards and definition of xianity. what I mean by this is that I think Jesus was the ultimate apostate, and I dig what he did, or what the bible says he did. So I dig jesus, but I'm not a xian.
The things I have a problem with is this.....Honesty says he had a major experience in life that left him a believer and I've heard countless other xians say the same thing - However, they've never shared what that experience was for them. I'm not saying this to have someone share something they'd rather keep private. If that's the case, that's cool with me - but I am genuinely curious about these experiences I hear about.
cool thread btw. -

Buddhism bigger than JWs in US - Why? Does It Appeal to YOU!
by Seeker4 inthere is an article on yahoo news today that says buddhists now-number over 1.5 million in the us, compared to about 1 million jws, and that they grew 170% in the 1990s.
here are a couple of points they make in the article:.
"what is drawing people (after that fascination with zen buddhism in the '50s and '60s)?

it appeals to me, but I feel as GBL. It's not all ABSOLUTE TRUTH-
it really has helped me wade through many issues and spiritual crisis in my mind though.....
interesting article. thanks for posting this. -

Hiding in the Organization
by purplesofa ini have to tell a bit of background to get to the point of this post.
it will probably be long.. my brother called last night.
he is still very upset about our younger brothers suicide recently.

Purps-
this is so my mom and stepfather!! they have 3 kids that won't have anything to do with them anymore and they continue to lie and slander us about how horrid we all are.
they hide in the org. behind this facade of "christianity" and it makes me want to vomit.
your mom and my mom live in this bubble of illusion and stepping out of this dream would just be too much honesty for them.
it's sad, but what are you going to do.
I'm glad you have your siblings. I have mine also, and it helps you get through the mess that was your life when you were a kid. -
