I as raised a JW. Knew nothing else. I was jealous of the kids with birthday cake, and I cannot have any. I did sneak my own 'birthday' in grade 2. My friend encouraged me to tell the teacher it was my birthday. My birtday is in December and this was about June/July. The class sang happy birthday and I conned my mom in making crumpets for the whole class. In hindsight she (teacher) must have been in on it as she knew I was a JW and when my birthday was! I did not do that again in case I was found out.
The whole school knew of me of course. The flag issue and not joining in singing the anthem etc etc makes you stand out! LOL
My parents gave little interest in my grades. They did not go to parent/teacher evenings. Strangely enough they did allow me to go the Matric Farewell, (Prom night in the USA) They joined the other parents at the dinner as well! And my father was an elder then too. Now that I think of it, it was strange.....
But I digress. I regret not forcing my parents to send me to University, or trying to get a scholarship. I just gave in to the 'no education' thing. And of course the military issue in South Africa at the time had only one outcome for a good JW boy, Military prison, or 6 years community service. I got the latter sentence, me and a whole lot of JW kids.
I short, it sucked big time!!!!

An Assembly "Experience"-and the rest of the story
by CaptainSchmideo ina brother was on the program for the saturday afternoon session as one of those "life experiences" interviews.
tells the tale about how he left a lucrative, well paying position to "help where the need was greater.
" moved from a major metropolitan area to a congregation in the rurals, was told by managers that the job he was going to was "a dead end".

I recall a story told at an assembly where the bro used to be a member of the special forces for the (then) Rhodesia army. Now Zimbabwe.
His mom was a JW and he wanted out of the army and his part in the intelligence gathering part of it. He 'found 'the thruth' etc etc, blah blah ad nauseum. He got a letter in his hotel room, slipped under the door, telling him he can get out and will not be investigated if he leaves for South Africa that night. Transport was aranged etc.
I was 10yrs old or so and ask my father, an elder already, if that was true. Sounded like BS, (I did not say it like that though. LOL) He said it must be true if Jah allowed it to be said at a convention. The bro's at Bethel check these things. And the the clincher, if it turns out to be a lie, his lack of faith will show, and he won't come to meetings and be disfellowshipped.
See? All bases covered ALL the time.
(To the tune of Jingle Bells)
BS, BS, BS all the way.......

The faithfull and discreet slave is a parable. If you want to take that literaly, then there should be a 10 virgin class as well, as these two parables were told together to make the same point. Which was be prepared for Christ's return. Correct? You cannot keep one part and dismiss the other.
Then you mentioned the 144000, who happens to be in heaven. Where is the great crowd? In front of the throne. They are in heaven too. Go have a look. read it as it was meant to be understood. If you take the number as literal, then WHO they are must be literal too. Agreed? Then they should be Jews, from the 12 tribes of Isreal, and they must be virgins! You cannot read real and fairy tale into the same scripture. Jehovah is not like that. If he gave the writer inspiration to record his message, He will give it straight. No crooked mind bending maneuvres to understand the meaning,
Last point and I will stop, promise.
If Russel, Rutherford, Knorr, etc etc were inspired by God, or the holy spirit, then their writings would be just that. "Inspired writings" Good enough to be included in the Bible, not so? Not only are they out of print, they are not referred to by other Wtactower publications. They are full of writings that would now be considered 'apostate'. Astrology, Occult references, Pyramidology etc ect. If Jesus had to pick a Faithfull and discreet slave in 1914 when he started reign, he would NOT have picked Russel. (Who claimed to be the F&D slave, by the way) Thus their writings are NOT inspired or directed by God as God does not make mistakes. Ever.

Society developing anti-apostate software for JW's computers
by yaddayadda inheard a rumour that the society is working on an 'anti-apostate' software programme for jw's to purchase thru the congregation and instal on their home pc's to block access to apostate websites.
it will be based on standard anti-porn software and on the 500 most commonly used words on apostate websites.

I know this thread is nonsense, but I can well imagine that someone in Brooklyn must have thought about it. Seems logical to control yet another part of the rank & file's lives.
Scotsman, you remind me of myself a few years ago. I would agressively 'defend' the 'Truth' to anyone and everyone. But listen to someone who had to humbly accept that he was duped. I had to admit that mistakes, blunders, and unsubstantiated claims (read prophecies) were made in the organization, and it was not admitted. In fact it was covered up, misdirection is used, and lies told to reduce the damage. You have been lied to my friend. And you are still being lied to. You cannot see it because you have been trained not to see it.
When the Watergate scandal broke, did Nixon admit he made a horrendous error in judgement? Nope, a team of people covered up, lied threatened etc etc to keep 'the truth' from coming out. And if it wasn't for determined journalists it would have been lost as footnote on a police report.
Investigation is not a crime. The "truth' has nothing be afraid of. Check the facts, it is not fabricated, I assure you.

How did you feel when first posting on JWD?
by R.F. ini was in heavy doubt about the organization, but still in the back of my mind i was a bit hesitant of posting because it was the "unforgivable sin".
i think it took me 20 minutes to type my first post.
i still felt that once i submitted my post that a bolt of lightning was going to come down upon me, so my hands were shaking as i was typing.

I was not comfortable at all to make that first post. The guilt and 'are they watching' thing was ever present. When I posted a brief story of my life as a JW, I thought that someone is going to be able to identify me and I will have the elders on my doorstep in 24 hours, and a JC 10 minutes after that! Seriously!
I still lurk more often than I post. But I have no 'fear of men' anymore. Let them come, I have ammunition now! And I will use it!
I sometimes wonder if there are elders or someone from Bethel reading our posts and trying to figure out who we are. Very Orwellian huh? 1984 and big (bad) brother watching us. Has anyone seen "Equilibrium"? The JW mindset is so similar to that film. For me anyway.
