  how would bush justify this war if hussein was willing to leave the country?

  he wouldnt have had to. had hussein left, and the entire regime stepped down, we wouldve simply marched into the country and taken over until an interim government could be put in place, and we wouldve had our 300,000 inspectors start searching for wmd, as they are now. or perhaps larger scale u.n. inspections wouldve continued....its hard to say at this point. we will never know.

  how would he justify that these negotiations were not made public?

  they would have been made public if they ever took place, thats the whole point (ad nauseum).

  how would he justify that the UN was not informed?

  the u.n. wouldve been informed....it would serve no purpose to keep this info from the u.n.

  he told the US public that he wants hussein out or the war would start...

  but once hussein is willing to leave the US says no no we were not serious.

  when was hussein ever willing to leave? he wasnt, not at any point in time.....you are still fabricating this idea.

  . If you're offended by it, ignore it. I ignore baseless pro-war comments and insults. A harmless flag should be ignored if you don't like it.

  personally, i agree....there are a lot of things on any board that may or may not be offensive to somebody, but that somebody can simply ignore it. ignore the yellow ribbon if it insults you, how hard is that?

  Like I said, I think people are opposed to it because it is a sign that we roundly reject Bush's explanations for his little war, that we love America (which they can't understand), but that we still think that a peaceful way is a better way.

  i would just like to say that i am on the "prowar" side, and i do respect the beliefs of those that think there is a peaceful solution. i do fully understand that you can love america and hate this war, and i dont think im a minority on that one (i could be wrong). i think blanket implications are made on both sides, and its ridiculous. cant i be "prowar" but also accept the reasons for the "antiwar" movement? you have the right to be against the war, and you have the right to say it. we dont have to agree on it, and i dont have to believe you are anti-america bc of your views. i take issue with the way some people go about protesting, but thats a different story.

  a lot of us can have different opinions about going war... some can support it... other can protest it... and thats what freedom of speech is all about.

  but there's a threshold and we're past that threshold... we're at war.

  so no matter what your opinions were before or even now no one can change the fact that we are at war and that won't change no matter how much those that oppose it try.

  i realize what simon was trying to do, and i already said i dont think he had bad motives. i just think you can plant an idea, and then watch it explode. the yellow ribbon was clearly defined by email before anyone started posting it, and it was defined in a way that i believe left no possible chance for anyone to be offended by it. but, even with this definition, if you then reply by saying "this might make the antiwar posters put up their own symbols", guess what? they read it and say "good idea". self-fulfilling prophesy. would the antiwar posters have ever "countered" with symbols on their own? its possible i guess, we will never know.

  i noticed on the other thread that you added "flags" to the list of offensive symbols that are "in your face". this sounds like it could get out of hand pretty quick, if we are now stating that even supporting our own countries with a symbol is "offensive". simon has never, in the past, objected to political symbols (as the threads he just posted show), and now we are being told "this is not a political forum", and please refrain from posting political symbols. i think its tough when you start censoring what may or may not offend someone. personally, i find it offensive when simon claims that showing support with ribbons is just a worthless gesture, but i dont think his words should be censored because of it. oh well, i said i wasnt interseted in carrying on about this, yet im still here, so i should digress.

  Would it be better to have a halt to war topics ?

  unfortunately, it seems that people are unable or unwilling to debate or discuss the war and stay civil.

  people are accused of all sorts of extremes such as "advocating child torture and rape" if you are against the war or "being a mass murderer and war criminal" if you support it.. some people seem to want to be able to post anything they want and it be accepted verbatim while other people are denied an opinion that doesn't agree with theirs.. i for one am sick of it and i suspect that other people are too.. this is supposed to be a site for jw related issues.

  not exclusively but primarily.

  I'm all for topics for discussion but frequently there is no intent to discuss things, just repeat rhetoric and so forth.

  well, by the title of this thread you implied that you wanted our opinions of the war topics issue, and i think i made some pretty valid points about friends and current events. maybe you just have to start making some judgement calls, and everyone else will have to deal with it.

  i will add this (after reading pleasures post).....you do have posters on this site willing to make your points for you, regardless of my opinions (or anyone elses). im not sure if these ideas wouldve sprung up or not, had this issue not been made from the start....but now that its an issue, your stance is completely validated by others.

  This is supposed to be a site for JW related issues. Not exclusively but primarily. Sure, we have some subject areas for world affairs but this should be for big events and not a blow-bly-blow account of the war as news dribbles out. This war is likely to go on for weeks or months, maybe even longer and there a danger it will just take over. How many topics currently for instance are about the war compared to everything else?

  There are plenty of forums that are specifically about the war which people can use if they want it.

  There are plenty of sites that have news about the war that people will read if they want ...

  there might be other forums specifically about the war, but there are many friends here that only talk to each other here, so its natural for one of the biggest events in the last decade to get over-coverage here. during 9/11, how many threads were devoted to the tragedy, the latest news, the victims, the vigils, etc? the majority of the posts on the main page, i can guarantee that.....and it certainly wasnt a jw related issue. i guess the difference is we were predominantly united on that issue, whereas the current issues are divided heavily, which creates a lot of tension. the tension gets old for many, im sure, but im not sure how you could cut down the amounts of posts without hurting a lot of feelings. maybe blow-by-blow isnt what some want to see, but maybe others are very interested in the chopper that went down today, and would like to discuss it with their friends (that again, they only see here). i can see your points, but i can also see even more discontent and harder feelings if one persons post/thread is deemed "not as important" as someone elses because it isnt a "major event". tough dilemma.
