I still look at the latest Awake, Watchtower, and books my Dad has (he's semi-involved). And I can understand how people let themselves believe, they're so soothing and pre digested and do all your thinking for you. Smoothing out the wrinkles and worries into starched placidness. Lushly colored illustrations of people with gorgeous hair in meadows. Seriously, apparently after Armageddon Pantene will pour out of the bathroom taps. And above of all that carrot on the string of The New World coming annnnnnnnnny minute. Yep, any minute now, yes sure. Sure would be a shame to miss it wouldn't it? And the books are so small and tidy and easy to organize, as sterile and rote as The Society's wrapping the bible in a clear couch slipcover, to keep the fingerprints off. Looking through the bound volumes of The Watchtower they really have only four or five topics, the cover just keeps changing is all.

The only reason I don't like being tall is that I can't get a cloak and a mask and have a make up year trick or treating. It's so much fun to see every one dressed up.

I made contact after 15+ years
by Jourles ini finally made contact with an exjw sister that i knew while growing up.
let me explain.... when i was young(pre-teen to late teens), my family met at her parents house for book study.
her family was always considered one of the more "spiritual" families in the hall, if not the entire surrounding area.

This is like what I always heard about ones who had left, that they were now broke, preganant, drug addicts, living in hell holes. Only to find out they were happy, married, and getting on with their lives.

Were you afraid of what they thought about you in the Kingdom Hall?

throughout my tenure as one of jehovah's witnesses, i could not help notice how individuals.
became so conscious of what others thought about them.

Yeah I could never get when I read the literature about how we were so much better than Christendom because there were no rivalries or petty jealousies in our congregations, and we all got along and love, love, loved each other and how this was illustrated with dozens and dozens of carefully staged photographs. And then the reality than in my KH at least were some of the meanest, pettiest people imaginable that smiled at you while making a list of everything they thought wrong with you.

Your going to the meetings whether you like it or not!
by Atlantis inyour going to the meetings whether you like it or not!
thousands of jehovah's witness children have heard those threatening words backed-up with spankings, whippings, or even severe beatings.
but what if they are too small to understand?

Add another for the "damn I thought it was going to be a paradise because there were going to be no meetings ever, ever, again" pile. My parents were kind but I still hated all the meetings except the book study cause it was neat to be at someone else's house, but I never understood how the watchtower took about five minutes to read but about eleventy hours to talk about. Mainly I hated wearing an itchy dress and tight shoes, and the other girls who looked down on me because I didn't have a new dress every sunday and wore frilly dress socks instead of tights because I couldn't stand tights. And know that these were "good" girls, the only true christians, the happiest people on earth, the people who snickered and stopped talking when I walked by, the people I should count as my only associations. And that kids at school who were kind to me, and who wanted to invite me to their birthday parties were bad, immoral, and the kicker, Worldly. Did ever "Bad Associations Spoil Useful Habits" get tossed around my KH and house.

Visual Methodologies and Watchtower Illustrations
by slimboyfat ini have been reading a fascinating book about various strategies for studying the meaning of images: visual methodologies by gillian rose.
various approaches covered include compositional analysis, content analysis, psychoanalysis, semiology and discourse analysis.
it struck me how ripe watchtower imagery would be to such scrutiny, and how subtle trends in ideological emphases may be identified through the visual iconography that may be less apparent in the overt expositions of watcthower written texts.

I just love how blase the woman on the porch is, Justing leaning on her broom "aw she came back from the dead, how sweet"

When you read the watchtower.....................
by vitty inhow did you feel when you read the wts when you were still in the org.
after the fist couple of years of being in, i avoided it as much as i could.
it was like reading a day old newspaper over and over again.

That was me too, as a kid I thought the reason I couldn't get into The Watchtower because it was to serious and "deep" for a person my age. It's only now that when I look back at the odd bound volume I still have I see how simple and patting you on the head it is, "Jehovah is good, Jehovah is nice, the end of the system of things is coming annnnnnnny day now, be a pioneering pioneer who pioneers". When they were still mailed I did like getting them in the mail and looking at the pictures. And I still have a soft spot for Awake, I take a copy if my father has one (he occasionally goes to meetings).

Hee. And which gas stations have Cherry 7-UP, man even as a kid I knew that going to someone's house to tell them everything they believe is wrong wasn't the most productive way to get them to see your side.

There was a six foot inflateable spider at work with light up eyes and that wiggled its front legs that I'm kicking myself for not buying. And about the only time I don't like being tall is that I always wanted to get a cloak and mask and just go trick or treating once. Ah well, at least being a fromer JW means you can wait a day for the candy to go on clearance.
