1985 and baptism...I wish I had read this before today

i am posting a link as to being legally bound to jw rules at time of baptism.

i only did a quick skim, but what i gathered is interesting, and what it says about 1985 may be of use to some hoping to just fade and not be bothered.

in 1985, the questions were changed at baptism for legal purposes so they could have causation to defend themselves should you decide to sue for whatever reason.

The excerpt that you quote from the Revelation book where it says the great crowd "bow down" to the anointed slave should be read in context. At the beginning of the section "They Will Bow Down to You", page 60 para.11, it reads:

Hence, Jesus promises [the congregation in Philadelphia] fruitage: "Look! I will give those from the synagogue of Satan who say they are Jews, and yet they are not but are lying - look! I will make them come and do obeisance before your feet [bow down before your feet, ESV, NASB] and make them know I have loved you." (Revelation 3:9) ... Their 'doing obeisance' will likely be in the manner described by Paul at 1 Corinthians 14:24, 25, so that they actually repent and become Christians, fully appreciating Jesus' great love in surrendering even his soul in behalf of his disciples. - John 15:12, 13.

So, references to bowing down are echoing what the scripture says at Revelation 3:9, and refer to the congregation of anointed Christians, not just the governing body. Remember that at the time the Revelation book was written, the "slave" was understood to be all anointed Christians remaining on earth.

smiddy, the two baptism questions in 1960 were (The Watchtower, July 1, 1956, p.407) :

1) Have you recognized yourself before Jehovah God as a sinner who needs salvation, and have you acknowledged to him that this salvation proceeds from him the Father through his Son Jesus Christ?

2) On the basis of this faith in God and in his provision for salvation, have you dedicated yourself unreservedly to God to do his will henceforth as he reveals it to you through Jesus Christ and through the Bible under the enlightenment of the holy spirit?

In view of The Watchtower, July 1, 1955, p.411, it was not unusual to be reminded in the baptism talk that you were not symbolizing your dedication to a man, or to an organization, but in the name of the Father, the Son and the holy spirit.

Let's see what the Court decides. Certainly, if "multiple videos of his sexual offences" are presented in Court there will be no doubt of his guilt, but at the moment this is "alleged".

The ABC news report says that "police allege two of the victims tried to report to religious elders and 'were chastised, not believed and ostracised' and accused of being homosexual, before they went to police."

If there were two witnesses there would have to be a judicial committee. The alleged offences occurred between 2008-2018 and, after the ARC (2013-2017) and the Child Safeguarding Policy of Jehovah's Witnesses in Australia (March 2017), the elders would know the ramifications of allowing someone to remain in a position of trust after abusing children.

In this post-ARC age it doesn't ring true.

ABC news reported today that :

The accused man withdrew his application for bail after documents showed he owns up to five properties and holds multiple passports. He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on October 28.

Police allege the sex acts against several men, including ex-bible study students, occurred over years at several properties on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane.

Police allege two of the victims tried to report to religious elders and "were chastised, not believed and ostracised" and accused of being homosexual, before they went to police.

It also reports that his wife claims the alleged victims have "an axe to grind" with the Jehovah's Witnesses church.

In an affidavit tendered to the Maroochydore Magistrates Court the woman called the people who had made allegations against her husband "apostates". She clarified the term meant the group were "formerly members of our church who are now against our church".

Sea Breeze : I wonder if he was an elder; anyone know?

In a 7NEWS Brisbane news report, they said that "police allege he's an elder in a Jehovah's Witness community on the Sunshine Coast and that he used that position of power to commit these offences".

News reports say he was arrested in Maloolaba, a suburb of Maroochydore, where there is a congregation. It may be true that where there is smoke there is fire, but there are aspects of this report which incline me to doubt and I await the judgement of the Court with interest.

Fisherman : Usually, in a medical emergency of a child or when deemed medically necessary to save its life, the child is a ward of the State when parents refuse its “lifesaving” medical treatment.

That's true, Fisherman, but it still needs a court order in most countries. What makes this case different is that there was no medical emergency and the child's life was not in immediate danger. The child was actuellement une bonne condition ("currently in good condition"). The doctor informed the Court that 90% of extremely premature babies need blood transfusion at some stage of their treatment and so the Court order was requested in anticipation that a blood transfusion would be required.

While I understand why a doctor would want such a court order before an emergency occurred, this doesn't seem to me what the law intended and I would be surprised if there was not an appeal.

Article 16 of the Code civil du Québec ("C.C.Q.") states:

The authorization of the court is necessary in the event of unjustified impediment or refusal by a person who can consent to care required by the state of health of a minor ...

At the time the matter was brought to Court a blood transfusion was not required, just anticipated.

The actual ruling on the case which yalbmert99 refers to can be read here (in French).

The case was heard on 19th August 2022 and the parties were the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Québec – Université Laval ("CHUQ") as Applicant and the parents of the infant, RC and MP, as Defendants. The case was heard before Judge Philippe Cantin with the hospital's Legal Affairs Dept. representing CHUQ, and W. Glen How representing the parents.

The context of the case was that the child of the defendants was born at 26 weeks and 6 days pregnant, which is extremely premature. The hospital was seeking authorization to administer blood products which the parents opposed because of their religious beliefs.

The doctor explained that the child was hospitalized in the intensive care unit and, although it was currently in good condition, that was likely to deteriorate rapidly. Urgent transfusions might be required should there be active bleeding, surgery, or clinical degradation associated with anemia, thrombocytopenia, or bleeding disorder.

The parents argued that authorization should not be granted since the current state of their child's health did not require a transfusion.

The Court held that the preponderance of the evidence showed that the state of the child's health did require the care offered by CHUQ.

It authorized CHUQ to administer transfusions of blood products if it is deemed medically appropriate, but ordered them to minimize this to the extent that the child's state of health permits. It also directed them to inform the parents each time a transfusion of blood products is to be administered to the child and to provide them with any reasonable explanation for this procedure.
