Yes, very much so. I have always been timid in a way so being raised a JW and forced to go d2d, give talks, & comment at WT study was always torture. Although I was mentally independent, at the same time I was shy & timid. Not sure that makes sense but I have always just felt really screwed up. I could never allow myself to depend on anyone else - always had to be able to take care of myself. I always had a lack of trust of people and had a hard time letting anyone get really close. When I did, I was always disappointed. I subconsiously put up walls and keep people at a distance. Even now in my late 50s I feel like a loner. They have a singles group here in the new community I'm in but I haven't gotten up the nerve to go. I don't like to go somewhere new by myself so here I sit. - - - As far as family goes they only shunned me for about a year one time when I was living w/ a boyfriend. Once we broke up they spoke to me again. So now I pretty much avoid them cause I feel they don't really like me. I am the same person I was when he was around & they showed me what they really thought of me with the shunning. [They never shunned my sisters that did the same thing.] - - - I just don't know how much is genes and how much is WTS.

Socially Stunted?...you betcha.
by Lumptard inmy apologies if this has been done to death, but i was just curious how many of you feel that you have been socially crippled as a result of your association with the jws?
granted, this probably affects people who were raised as jws more than those who chose for themselves, but i just wanted to see if anyone else has had the same experience...also, how did you work through it if you were able to?

Sue? - NO, I don't think it would be worth the trouble. - - - Hate Crime? - YES. Prosecute the drunken adult perps celebrating NY Eve & make sure all relevant facts are presented in court about WTS. - - - At first I thought insisting you be allowed to speak to the congregation at the KH might be a good idea (in addition to prosecution). After further thought - they would probably announce to everyone to not come to the meeting that night - just like they told everyone to not watch Dateline the night they aired the pedofile story.

No physical retaliation. It would just make you look bad. - - A letter to the editor of a local paper and letters (& copy of the Police report) to the local PO and CO if you can get his address. If not, I would send his copy to Brooklyn. Especially since they have so much family around (if I recall what you said correctly). The local PO would probably just cover it up.

No, never. Guess I was just born too independent for WTS. At one meeting when just old enough to talk, my grandmother had taken me out for a whipping for not sitting still. On the way back in she asked me, "Are you gonna behave?" I said, "I do it agin." And I probably did! - - I also got a divorce without "scriptual grounds". One elder called me at home fussing at me telling me I had sinned. I wish I could remember what I told him. - - Growing up I always thought my mom was mean to my dad (away from the WTS) but now it all makes sense. I think it was her way of not submitting to his authority or at least making him 'pay' for it.

Yesterday I was in Linens & Things and they had the RED Exerciser that I had been seeing on TV infomercials. It was only $99 & I had the 20% off coupon so I had to buy it. They are about $175 on TV. Hope it works.

Austerity to lavish and back again How does it affect JWs?

the halls themselves were not by any means lavish or comfortable.
the seats were plain stacking chairs with no padding and uncomfortable enough to keep you awake.

With all the millions/billions they take in every year??? - - - And they don't even do any charitable work (that I am aware of). Isn't everything they "give" a loan - to be repaid with interest? - - - I also left in the mid 1980s. They were beginning to put in the comfortable theatre seats. Must have been the late 1970s, I visited a hall south of Atlanta had a sunken stage that gave you a feeling of being in a theatre.

Thanks - I figured out how to do it! I customized two topics one for Jehovahs Witness and another on Watchtower Bible and moved both to the top of the lists so you see them first. It picked up articles on both topics. One reporter wrote a pretty glowing article about JWs in Gainesville GA. I think I will send him an email and suggest that he take a look at the information on silent lambs. Perhaps he may want to do a follow up story.

Have you read the other thread dated 12/27 titled "Confused about the JW dating system"? That will give you some good points to think about. - - - Be aware that JWs do not do charity work as you are familiar with. Their "charity" is knocking on doors passing out literature. They should not be a member of service orgs - it takes time away from their "passing out literature work". - - - They definitely are not allowed to be involved in political activity. Several people on this website have suggested reading the book "Combatting Cult Mind Control" by Steven Hassan. I ordered a copy from www.half.ebay.com for a few $$ and just received it. You may want to get a copy to help you understand the position this girl is in mentally if she is a true JW.
