There is a scathing letter Armstrong wrote to Roderick Meredith March 14, 1980 at www.servantsnews.com/docs/merlet02.htm
I read the first sections of Meredith's booklet on tithing and that's enough for me. Just another money grabbing cult.

In 1985 my elder father and the rest of the JW family did their unofficial DF when my male friend moved into my home with me.
The relationship only lasted about a year and once he moved out the shunning stopped and everything went back to 'normal'.
They still try to get me to watch their WT videos and try to give me the mags occasionally but I have always declined. They haven't pushed going to the meetings in a very long time. I told my mother about 15 years ago she was brainwashed by the WTS. She still talked to me.
They have not shunned others in the family that have been DFed so they are a little more liberal in their old age than many I read about here. -

Do you like being a parent or grandparent better?
by avidbiblereader ini would have never thought that i would like being grandfather but i enjoy it more than being a parent, anyone else feel the same way?.
oh, by the way, my darlings are my new avatar, it is so fun being a grandfather and seeing the next generation come along, anyone else feel this way?.

Grandparent - I have so enjoyed my grandson. I am more relaxed and have the time to just have fun with him. We have gone bicycling, made day trips to the Aquarium, to Callaway Gardens & the butterfly house. When he was 5 we were on a day trip, I gave him the map and showed him where we were and where we were going. I told him he could be our navigator.
A little while later he told me he was our 'gator'. -

Query about how they work their numbers
by LaniB insince i have never officially disassociated myself but became inactive and just drifted away does that mean they still count me as one of their numbers in each year book?.
hmmm, never thought of it that way.
if so i am off to write my disassociated letter, but i did think how funny it would be if everyone who was like me suddenly opted out at once and they still counted us until then.

I believe those numbers are just 'active' publishers that are turning in field service time.

update on my divorce situation
by depressed ini'm shocked!
if you remember my experience, in a nutshell, basically my ex-bethelite ex pioneer husband cheated on me with an older "worldly woman" from his job and left me suddenly.
i had no idea that we had trouble with our marriage, however, when i discovered the love letters from the other woman, he moved out, and a week after that, i received divorce papers.

With a PO father, a pioneer mother and a Gilead sister I'm afraid he is pretty much 'teflon coated'.
Their attitude thus far should tell you they have no interest in taking any action other than protecting him.
Your anger is understandable but it's probably time to let it and him go.
Go for a hike - climb a mountain - work out that anger. It is a wonderful & beautiful world out there. -

Welcome to the board. I left the WTS close to 30 years ago. I find I still have a problem getting close to people especially now that I am retired. I am again feeling the issues with social skills.
There is a singles group in my community but I haven't gotten up the nerve yet to join in.
I just found this board last year. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. -

How polite are you?
by JH inoften i'm following someone into a building and entering the same door, and most of the times, the person in front won't even try to keep the door open so that it wont close in my face.
knowing that someone is right behind me, i'll even wait a second or two and hold the door open for that person.
i guess it has to do with being well educated.

I go out of my way to assist people but not to an extreme. I do hold doors, let others go ahead of me in a store if I have a cart full and they only have a few things.
I do not let people take advantage though (at least not for long). For instance, in a rest room a lady dropped her purse and everything spilled out on the floor. I bent down and started picking up her things to help her. When I realized she was not picking up anything but was standing there letting me do it all I stood up and walked out and left her things on the floor.
Both my kids have very good manners. I did have to correct my daughter once when she was learning to drive. She was giving other people the right of way that could have caused a wreck. Good manners only work when they don't put you or others in danger. -

Went to San Antonio and didn't talk to mil
by hambeak ini haven't spoken to my mil in a week and took a sunday off for myself and went to san antonio.
saw the alamo and had a late lunch at joes crab shack yuck!.
i had a good time and walked on the river walk and it was beautiful.. i am a bit tired but mentally refreshed i am told that i am being selfish and uncaring.
-
MeneMene
I am glad you enjoyed your day in San Antonio. Have you ever been on the Riverwalk during December when everything is decorated with Christmas lights? The first time I was there was the first part of December and they had just turned on the lights. What a fantasy land. I loved it. (I went back again during the spring and it just wasn't the same without the lights.)
No, I personally do not think you are being selfish or uncaring. From what you have said in the past it sounds like your mil's family has really been taking advantage of you. Take a few weeks for yourself.
If you like to cook, maybe after a while you might want to start cooking a meal once a month or once every other month for them. Whatever is comfortable for you. Maybe schedule something ahead so they can look forward to it - like Sunday April 15 and then Sunday May 27.
It's fun cooking for a crowd when you want to do it. When people come to expect it - and demand it - it is no longer a pleasure.
Take care of yourself. -

Lecithin?.....
by Pahpa indoes anyone remember the brouhaha over lecithin in candies and other food items?
i remember one sister writing to all the manufacturers of these products to inquire whether or not the lecithin was from a blood source.
there were even lists of products to avoid that were circulated in the congregation.
-
MeneMene
Yes I remember - must have been back in the early 60s. Probably as a result of the articles blondie referenced. Everyone was looking for Lecithin on the food labels.
Now I just try to find stuff without High Fructose Corn Syrup!!
