Looking for advice from anyone out there with grad or advanced degrees
by NYCkid inhey, i'm finishing up my last year in undergrad school and am considering pursuing grad school.
i am hoping to chat with individuals privately, who are attending grad school or have a graduate/advanced degrees for advice about the practicalities and expenses relating to attending grad school later in life (mid-30s +).. i'm not pursing medicine, law or business, so i'm concerned that the effort and expense of grad school may not be worth it.. thanks,.
nyckid.

Have you ever researched your family history, any tips?
by restrangled ini have been researching on and off and just started up again for my dad.
i've gotten back to 1869 and could get further, but all i run into is adds to pay on line companies.
has anyone ever subscribed or used one of these out fits.

My favorite website, in addition to the ones mentioned, is onegreatfamily.com. It is subscription based. The census records are a great place to gather information. Also, the ellisisland.org if your family immigrated to the US.

Bad Dream
by PoppyR in4am in the uk, and i was jolted awake by a dream about my mother dying, she is not in good health.
i felt overwhelmingly sad that if this happens, she will die in sadness over me.
and also very upset because she is my mum and i want her to love me and be interested in my life and that just isn't the case any longer.. i realise i am 'luckier' than some on here because at least she speaks to me.

Poppy--I feel your pain. Last year when I was booted, I lost all my sibs except one, all my lifelong friends and I left hubby. It was lonely at first, but I very determinedly went out and made a new life for myself. You have a huge support system here so you are not alone!

That is funny! Did she learn to open the door or did she sneak in when you weren't looking? My cat likes to hide too, but she has never made it into the fridge.

What Positive Things Have You Achieved Since Leaving?
by sweet pea inpurps' wonderful thread about love made me wonder about something else.
what have you achieved/become since leaving the organisation that proves there is a happy, successful life outside being a jehovah's witness?
for me, although it's only been a very short time, too short to achieve much, i count becoming: non-judgemental of my fellow man; a mum that can give her kids all the room to grow and blossom without fear of 'sinning' or being kicked out for bad behaviour; a person that can feel comfortable worshipping in a church or not, depending on whatever i feel like doing; someone who can love and give freely and celebrate life in all it's glory (i just love birthdays!

A life, a BBA, dating some interesting men, a small group of genuine friends who care about me no matter what & vice versa. The list could go on. I enjoy life each day rather than looking into a tunnel into a future in Stepford Paradise.

Photuris Female / Photinus Male and the Watchtower
by Blueblades insomething i read about.
photuris is a killer female of one genus of firefly.
she plays a deadly trick on the males of another firefly genus, photinus.. understandably, the photinus males scrupulously avoid contact with the bloodthirsty photuris females.. but through the centuries of experience, the female hunters have located a weakness in their prey, a special blinking courtship code by which members of the victims' species tell one another they are ready to mate.. somehow, the photuris female has cracked the photinus courtship code.

I finally took my stand.
by Orgull ini just missed two meetings for the first time in five years.. this past week i went "on vacation", housesitting for relatives nearby.
i told my bookstudy overseer i'd be "away", even though i was only a twenty minute drive from the kingdom hall.
i spent the entire week away from my insane family, away from the meetings and away from my "brothers and sisters".. it felt great.. coming home felt... not so great.. but the first brick in my fade has been laid.

What ever pace you choose, it is important to build a support system completely outside the borg realm. This is a great place to start--you can blow steam here & keep the facade up in the dublife.
