Creationism hiding in plain sight
by FireNBandits ina friend pointed out to me that "theistic evolution" is, in essence, no different than intelligent design.
both postulate a creator that is behind creation.
both use the words "creation" and "creator.

I think my responses make my position quite clear. Evolution is fact, science. God is a belief, and a mystical experience. That's not science, except insofar as neuorology is mapping the brain, discovering which parts of the brain are responsible for various mystical experiences. Might there be more to it than simply neurochemistry? Perhaps...but that's faith, not science.
Martin I understand what you are saying and what you have said.
My question is to do with how God was involved in evolution. Do you leave that aspect open because at present it isn't/can't be understood ? Do you have an inkling of it mystically?

hi fireNbandits
I'm a theistsic evolutionst, but I sure as HELL don't want it taught in a science classsroom! WHOSE "creator" are we going to proclaim? There's nothing the least bit scientific about my belief in "theistic" evolution! God is outisde the realm and methodology of science! (Something fundies are unable to either grasp or see the significance of).
I'm curious about what you mean by theistic evolution - care to explain.
thanks

How the Religious View Homosexuality
by serotonin_wraith infor people who are still religious, what are your views on gays?.
for me (an atheist) it goes against my own morality to think of them as sinners or somehow doing wrong, and yet in the bible it teaches that it is wrong.
it's one of the main reasons i could never go along with the jws.. i'm curious how religious people address this issue.

but atheists don't believe in god or do theybernadette
, by your reasoning, if moving away from scripture (the word of God apparently) is a good thing, then atheists are the most worthy in God's eyes!Personally I don't believe that the bible is the word of god but I view it an authoritative work of sincere believers in god who claim that it is of divine origin.

Why is it then, that such change in attitude is always a few steps behind a people not governed by Scripture, and never the other way around?
The teachings attributed to Jesus Christ were radically different and they killed him. It seems to me that some of his teachings were looking forward to a time when people wouldn't be governed by scripture (or moral absolutes). To me that's what it means to be fully human. So in answer to your question - we are getting there - imo its something to aim for.

Sirona I agree with your points
the Sins of Scripture by John Shelby Spong takes a look at homosexuality from a modern day spiritual religious perspective.
If modern day christianity has made changes in perspective with regard to birth control, divorce etc that christians are accepting of and comfortable with why not homosexuality too?

My parents wanted me to do a degree and follow a professional career - they had such high hopes for me. My husband's parents wanted him to do one too, they were livid when he dropped out of doing his A'levels to pioneer.
I really feel like I'd like to complete my education now though but am unsure what in - religious studies. I was never very good at mathematics at school and now feel quite motivated to maybe do a year long highschool level course in maths. Get the old grey cells going - feeling excited thinking about it - good topic restrangled.

I like your raging fire that is the watchtower society analogy - so true, who can remain whole especially as they actively shut one's conscious mind.
