Hey, I have used the Mormons as examples in my discussions with JWs too. I found a book called Leaving the Saints written by Martha Beck (check the Internet) to be a very interesting look into the wackier side of their religion, including descriptions of the temple ceremonies, wife and child abuse, apostate treatment, spying, lying, etc. It is the kind of book that I devoured in one day of hard reading. I think it is a step if your wife would be willing to think about these other groups as being cultic (Honey, why do the Mormons fit this description?) to then seeing if the JWs could possibly also fit and to examine her own beliefs.

What do I tell my wife about the MORMONS?
by OnTheWayOut ina mormon declared his intention to run for president of the usa.. my wife starts talking about it and says that they are mainstream christianity.
except for the multiple-wives issue.. i told her that the official church doesn't allow the multiple wives, but i cannot .
see them as a normal mainstream religion.

How do you stay sane? I'm acting the part of the "interested study" to try and share information that they have never, never seen or heard. It is very hard!!!!! But at least we get relief when they walk out the door after the study. However, to be living it day in and out must be torture on your conscience.

As a parent to daughters, I can sort of see what the father's point was, since I go into alarm mode too whenever I sense a male within striking distance of my beauties! LOL! And we actually do have a "third nerd" policy for travelling. However, I think that he went about expressing his concerns in an unloving way. And, as you have admitted, your attitude was a little testy--that never helps the matter.
As already mentioned, why was the daughter walking alone so far from home? I wouldn't have allowed that.
Secondly, he should have thanked you for having the common decency to go the biblical "extra mile" and give the girl a ride home.
Third, had you and he ever had a conversation about not being alone with the daughter? If not, then how would you know that was his preference?
Fourth, it seems that the daugther should have been aware of the father's preference and should have said "Thanks, but I'm not supposed to travel unchaperoned".
Fifth, maybe you should take it as a compliment--you must be such a stud that the father was worried about his daughter succumbing to your obvious personal charms! Girls of that age are notorious for crushing on older guys like yourself. Maybe she's been talking about you ever since...
Here's how I would have done it: "Thank you so much for bringing daughter so and so home, it was so thoughtful of you to save her the walk. However, I would prefer in the future for there to be someone else in the car too. I hope you don't mind, but that is a rule we have, and I have already reinforced that again with daughter so and so. "
Live and learn, right?

Something is in the basement...
by frozen one inthis morning i was doing my typical sunday morning routine, which consists of pretty much nothing, and went to the kitchen for a coffee.
i noticed that one of my cats was sitting next to the basement door which was an odd place for the cat to be sitting but i didn't give it a second thought.
a bit later i went to refill my coffee cup and the cat was in the same place.

Your stories are so funny, lol!
It has been cold here so I don't fault the bird for getting in. I have a heated bird bath that gets heaps of visits. A couple of neighborhood stray cats have been enjoying the heated cat shelter out back during this cold snap. Those two have been trying to sneak into the house but I don't think my cats would appreciate it much if they made it in.
A heated bird bath? Is that like a hot tub for birds? A heated cat shelter? Sounds like a feline sauna. No wonder you are having stray visitors: the word has gotten around the animal kingdom that you are the place to go for some tropical R&R (sort of like when the Canadians go to Florida for the winter).

Listen, if I were a bird these frozen days, I would find a way to get in to a nice warm cosy house, cat or no cat!

Hi guys:
I've been reading the above posts with interest. I have tried to explore the original issue with the local JWs I study with: How do you know you are annointed? How could more people become annointed when 144,000 is the limit, and that is supposed to take into account the last 2000 years. How is it that someone today could suddenly feel that they were annointed?
The answers:
A. From a pioneer
A shrug.
"I don't know"
"It's just something that you feel inside"
"It is not for us to judge"
"I have no desire to be of the heavenly class"
B. From Superelder:
(In a conspiratorial whisper)"Well, the reality is that those people who now claim to be of the annointed have mental problems.
There you have it, folks, according to the society, if you are annointed then you must be deranged.

One thing you should be aware of is that the Alpha Course teaches that the sign gifts of the Holy Spirit are still active today (speaking in tongues, prophecy, etc.) It is a part of the Third Wave movement of charismatic teaching. Many churches that use the program omit the Holy Spirit teaching in order to avoid this. The churches that would omit the tapes are "cessasionists", that is, they believe that certain of the gifts (aka "sign gifts") were active in the apostolic era for the confirmation of the new revelation being given to the Jews at the time re: the New Covenant and early Christian church. It is believed that these specific gifts of tongues, prophecy and healing then died out by the end of the first century AD.
I have just finished reading an interesting book called Charismatic Chaos by John MacArthur Jr. which clearly explains this. If you are interested in these things, do a search on the Internet for more info or PM me for specific articles.
Without knowing the church that is hosting the weekend, it would be impossible to say if they are cessasionist or not. If they aren't, then it could be a wild ride!

How about National Treasure for it's masonic symbolism? Then check the Proclaimer's Book and see the same symbols on the old WT mags.
I absolutely recommend watching The Visual Bible--available in Matthew and Acts. It is a word for word reading of the the New International Version with the drama (high quality). It really gives a flow to the life of Christ and the early church and emphasizes things that you might miss by hitting verses here and there. Also the portrayal of Jesus is beautiful--he's not a wimp in this version, but is fun, brotherly, loving, very physical. It moved this ol' heart of mine.
Acts made me realize how much the apostles said (over and over again) they were doing things in THE NAME OF JESUS, not the name of JEHOVAH!
And you get 2 discs for only $12.99, so it is not a money-grubbing operation either.
ABR, you would probably really enjoy these!
