The ex and I were pioneers and Tuesday was a big FS day for us. We were on our way to the KH and I was listening to sports talk when the host said that there were reports of a plane that hit the WTC.
After the meeting for FS, one of the elders wives got a call to turn on the news. We did and heard about the jets. We instantly went to the elders home and saw what happened. Then the Pentagon got hit. We had relatives in Washington DC, they were about 15 minutes from the Pentagon. They said they only heard sirens but were so busy working that they didn't know what was going on at the Pentagon till just before 10:00
We "preached" all day long. Didn't offer a damn piece of damn literature (I am proud of that) and just talked with people. Then around 4, there was a mad rush to the gas stations. Gasoline shot up close to $2.00/gal. (ironic to think about those prices now....) All the gas stations were fined by the state that day...... Somehow, I didn't get my money back....
I cleaned banks for a living... (insert funny ex JW joke here) and kept the TV news on at every bank. I kept thinking about the Great Tribulation. I will never forget me catching myself, literally grasping for a breath when I allowed myself this thought. I will never forget it. "This is exactly what we (JW) are saying is going to happen during Armageddon." I was never the same. That thought literally started what became an avalanche of free thought. Of honest thought. It awakened me to the fact that I hadn't listened to myself. I told myself this too: "We (JW's) mourn these people now, but when Armageddon comes, we are going to be happy?" My "faith" was never the same.
Later I realized that I was more caught up in moving up the company ladder and trying to please my ex then anything having to do with religous faith. But that day shook me from my JW faith forever. Even if it took me years to leave, I was never the same, to which I am thankful.
I know people died by the thousands that day. I mourn and think of them every day. From that day forward, I felt connected to the human race. That was the day I didn't want people to die needlessly anymore. It's weird, because as a JW, I use to talk about the death of billions like it was no big deal. Then I saw 9/11, and I saw that it was. If there is a loving god, he isn't a JW....

Guys: How do you show your interest?
by serendipity inguys, when you are trying to woo a woman, in the early days before you get physically intimate, how do you show your interest in her?

AllTimeJeff
*sigh*
I don't know. I am trying to figure that out. I don't want to come across as a pig. I smile, grin, smile some more and up till now, then go home.... lol
I would love to just talk, but I still get nervous. My JW hangover I guess......
At the end of it all though, if I like her, I say something like "You know, I really like you, and I would like to get together again." Thats my line!

Going against the grain was part and parcel of their claim to True Worship.
When you have full access to the history of JW's, you can see that they were totally interested only in being different. It's almost as if they pioneered (no pun intended) the idea of "no such thing as bad pub, only no pub...) They claim that the bible doesn't prophecy of a worldwide conversion to "Christianity", but in reality, they are marketing their bullshit to a niche market only. They don't care about worldwide conversion, they only care about making a fuss, controversy. They shake the tree and take whatever bad apples fall. They aren't talented enough to pick their own....
Beards. BEARDS!!! FACIAL HAIR!!!!! HAIR FOLICLES GOD PUT ON YOUR FACE!!!!!!
They so need to grow up.

Will the Book Study ever be dropped from the weekly meetings?
by RULES & REGULATIONS inthe book study is one of the most useless meetings.
the same books have been studied 3 or 4 times.the meeting takes only an hour but takes up most of your evening.
and, it is one of the least attended meetings.. why haven't they combined the watchtower study with just question and answer and then follow with the book study with just question and answer?

I remember our bookstudy conductor telling us that when the UN turns against the JWs, meeting in the KH wouldn't be an option.
Probably because the GB will have rented them out to the UN.....

It is the most useless of meetings to the R n F, but not to the GB. Reasons?
- The ability to divide into smaller groups and assigning an elder as a "B.S. Overseer" (pun intended) gives more ability to control and keep track of who is holding the company line.... It is borg policy to assign even the longtime inactive into a group. The idea behind this is that an elder has the responsibility to "shepherd" his little flock.
- For the reasons listed above, it is easier to single out those who are not regular in the all important preaching work........... (back from barfing at my own role in that...) Elders can make arrangements to take someone out in FS, even for an hour. Typicaly, an elder is better thought of is he is a BS Overseer and gets a few inactive to report some FS time.....
- Also, for controversial teachings as found in their "Daniel" and "Revelation" books, it is easier to convince a smaller groups and handle those who might question. (unless it is the elder who questions, which means you can have 30 minute book studies then get the hell home.... )
One CO put it this way if we feel to tired to go to meetings: "It isn't the meetings that are making you tired, it is the world!"
Since I have left, I have come to the conclusion that the GB is just as enslaved to their own traditions as the so called "false" religions that they claim do the same thing. There is no scriptural precedent at all for THREE meetings a week. Its just tradition. JW tradition. And for all of their self proclaimed "wisdom", the GB is unwilling to admit that having 4 days with obligations to the cult is causing stress, a lack of time and attention spent to children in families, and in general contributes to the mental and emotional stress that JW are feeling more and more. The GB KNOWS that the flock is feeling this way. They don't want to admit that it is their own teachings and workload that are causing it.
For those of you who still believe in the bible (disclosure: I don't)
(Matthew 23:4) 4 They bind up heavy loads and put them upon the shoulders of men, but they themselves are not willing to budge them with their finger.

Billions of Lives Depend On This?
by R.F. inthe greatest work of all time, never to be repeated, is supposedly done by jehovah's witnesses.
of course you know i'm referring to the door to door work they take part in.
so many lives are at stake and your life is dependent on if you "accept the good news" that they preach.. i surely don't believe this anymore.

One thing that really struck me upon reflection was how arbitrary the JW view of saving a life was.
How can someone be judged on the basis of a little boy or girl offering a magazine called the Watchtower? If they turn down that little presentation, that means according to WT theology they are going to be judged as a goat. Because they turned down a magazine?
The whole pov that this is a lifesaving work is very self serving. No matter your religous persuasion, or lack therof, the idea that billions of people will be judged worthy of death becase
- They didn't accept the WT and AW mags
- They didn't follow through the one time they did accept them and skimmed them over
IS NUTS!
If it is THAT serious, lets send out the heavyweights, lets train them right, and lets get the warning work done. The main reason though is to give the flock something to do. Keep em busy and distracted from all else that is wrong with this cult.
Great point about technology. (i.e. TV, radio, etc) They aren't interested in reaching the masses. They are interested in finding the fringe element of society, or at least the naieve and ill informed that are outcasts or misfits, and offers them something where they won't be viewed as a misfit... Won't they be surprised......

I've made up my mind :-)
by Redbeard inhi everyone, don't know if you remember me, i posted a topic a while ago because i was in need of advice about what to do in my life - so to all you who took your time and posted caring replys and good advice, i just want to say that i've made up my mind - i'm continuing my fade for the fourth month and i'm gone from the borg for good.
if some elders decide to stick their nose in it, i'll shut the door myself.
there's no future in staying in there for the sake of anyone else, lying to yourself and everyone else.

Why is the "Cross" an issue?
by Doug Mason inwhat does the wts hope to achieve by creating an issue of the shape of the implement that jesus was nailed to?
why are they prepared to go so far as to misrepresent authorities through selective quotations, such as of lipsius as well as of liddell and scott?
this is not about the shape of the implement, but to unearth the reason why the wts has this position.

I agree it is wrong to tell someone that they are idolotrous on anything. That is a common bullshit argument that the GB uses on a lot of things. How can anyone know what someone worships anyway? And if the cross is merely a reminder to believers, I would be offended by someone telling me I was worshiping something I wasn't worshiping at all!
This is JW making up the arguement, framing the arguement, answering their own made up questions, and then saying everyone else just lost the arguement. Typical.

Short of anyone pulling out a Polaroid, no one knows for sure. The real issue isn't what the cross represents (a penis? Give me a break) but what the WT does with it.
If you will go by the old maxim "The only bad publicity is no publicity" then all the GB wants is to stir things up. They know most believers won't go for it. And they also continue to need to promote themselves as "different and distinct" from any other religion out there. So make it a big deal if Jesus hands were supposedly over his head or at shoulder length.
From a purely theological point of view, JW's always had a much better arguement about the use of the cross as an idol, which both OT and NT condemn. I recall several times preaching that I pulled out the "Reasoning" book and showed them the JW stand that it represents a penis. As you can imagine, that doesn't work to well, esp with women at the door.. lol!
Not to be offensive to thiests, but no one knows for sure how he really died. The only thing likely is that the historical Jesus's life was somehow ended prematurly.
