Alleged Prophecies Fulfilled by Jesus
by JanH inmost exjws are familiar with the claims that the gospel accounts about jesus "fulfills" around 300 prophecies in the old testament.
this claim is taken verbatim from christian fundamentalists.
checking out these so-called prophecies will reveal that they do not stand up to scrutiny.

For many of us the grave disappointment and conflict we faced in religion was how the words of Jesus were overwhelmed by the claims of the religious interpreters of the NT.
Jesus said he stood on his teachings. that is in the accepted canon of scripture and the heretical (so-called)gospels.
It is clear in the gospels, inspite of religion, that religion should never claim our conscience.
Getting thrown out of the synagoge should be a badge of honor for a christian--but no church will teach that!

Ex- Jehovers Witnesses finds Christ...
by new hope and happiness inrecentley i read ray franz book " christian freedom" and it occurd to me if he had lost his faith and become athiest the society would have delighted in that.
i think had ray turned athiest it would have been more easily " justified" in the mags what a " evil man he was" ....but maintaining his faith left the possibillity the society could be wrong.. .
i am athiest but i kept this to myself when i left... any comments?.

Very interesting OP and conversation.
It's hard to unravel the God thing altogether.
It is one thing to throw over a lying destructive cult. And next you question all religion. and then question the experiences you have had and attributed to God. And THEN ask why the hell you believe in any of the cock-and-bull stories that have come down these past 6000+ years of other people's stories about god.
It is a weight to have to lift. I know of too many "miracles" that I had to allow that happen by chance. Not hearsay. but wonderful personal events. But I know that these things have also happened or not happened to others in a fashion so random that my own experience cannot be attributed to god. There is no reason for me to believe a loving god is so inconsiderate and inconsistent.
Illustration that helped me think:My sister has a pet box turtle she acquired when she opened her door in central Arkansas on New Years day--at the foot of the steps a wash of leaves with crusts of frost on them she saw a new hatched turtle, complete with a bump on its beak(egg "tooth"). I saw it with my own eyes afew days later.
No lies, no miracle, a strange event neverthe less. There had to be a series of natural events that made that turtle as amazing as Moses in the bulrushes.
And he ain't even a christian.
But I have no trouble with the scant evidence that a carpenter during the roman occupation of Judea broke out with a Pete Seeger message to the poor.
Religion serves good teachings a BAD TURN. Teachings are valuable when they build love and friendship. Bad teachings only make you followers. When teachings fail to help you become self-reflectively honest and loving then they are shams.
As for Ray--I love that Ray wrote what he did. I don't know quite how my religious friends will deal with me as my own understanding of god has changed.....
I'm listening to you, New Hope, Kate, Lucid, Punky....

Pete Seeger, the great peace activist and folk singer, has passed
by designs inpete seeger wrote songs that became the heart and soul of the civil rights movement- where have all the flowers gone, if i had a hammer, turn turn turn, waist depp in the big muddy, we shall overcome.... we traveled to the newport folk festival, which pete helped establish, and got to sing with the great man himself.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y2siieqy34.

I feel sorry for the R.Catholic's that got hoodwinked by the J.W.watchtower cult
by bobld inthey are now apostates in the eyes of the church.they are ostracized by family and friends.they have lost the privilege of confessing their sins to a priest and the blessed sacrament of the holy eucharist.just imagine and 18 yr old getting the boot from the parents to leave home.. now,the brainwashed cult member has the audacity to tell family and friends(if allowed) that the r.c.c.
lied to him/her and said that they could not read and understand the bible w/o the help of the priest.heaven forbid,if they read the publications of the watchtower, the faithful slave(gb) tells j.w.
that they cannot read the bible on their own and understand it w/o the help of the slave.it is in one ear and out the other.. r.c.c would not ostracize their members..

Not enough difference between them in the end. Transubstantiation. the Immaculate Conception of Mary(that is SHE is immaculately conceived--not Jesus)and various other things that have involved flip-flops for which burning at the stake was the remedy--How about the "filioque", the mish-mash of teachings on contraception ,unmarried priests. Galileo.
I loved a lot about catholicism from my childhood.
Stories of St. Francis, incense, the spooky-cool statues.
And they could kill each other. My dad's gun crew dug in near a German town in WWII and dad said it was great--the RRChurch was the same al over the world, he told me--he went to mass in a town where the men had gone to war against his countrymen.
cool--the same church for all.
Messed up.The JWs don't get to follow Jesus and the Catholics are f#@ked up about it too. They follow the leader--and I don't mean Jesus.
Religion constipates faith.

The relationship between the Father and Son. What's your opinion?
by DATA-DOG ini am curious about this.
ever since i realized that there is no proof that jesus=michael the archangel, i wondered about who jesus was.
that's how i think of the father and the son, or the word.

Words reflect our earthy experience--we invent words. That's why we are stuck with anthropomorphic terms to refer to god.
If there were god there is no true, clear way to talk to each other nor understand truly, clearly what we are describing.
Some Jesus writings refer to the "All" or the "Good" when speaking of God. How to describe the relationship? I can't say.
Good OP

Hello, hamsterbait,
Sorry you have to deal with cancer. I have nothing as comprehensive to advise as cofty laid out. My cancer was not in the same class as colo-rectal. Mine was anal canal, a squamous cell cancer. The chemo drug was called 5FU (fluorouricil) which I fondly referred to as fu**you5.
On the use of pot: Nausea was a problem. They gave me drugs for it . A fine young fellow (xJW)kindly brought me some high quality pot that I preferred for the nausea, though I didn't often use it. My nurse practicioner inquired on my drug regimin warned that if I used pot and didn't know if it was pure, clean(as in the regulated medical marijuana) to not use it.
I drank a lot of water and took probiotic suppliments.I frankly had trouble eating--I usually have a hearty appetite. It wasn't until after my 6 weeks of radiation/chemo (no surgery) that my appetite came back.
Go for it, Ham. This may sound bizarre, but use the time to pull the loves of your life close, really close and revel in it. That is the good part.

The Truth is Always Simple to Grasp.
by objectivetruth ini would like to share my understanding of armageddon & the end of the 1,000 year reign.
i would really appreciate any criticism, or facts that dispute this understanding... especially if the facts are from the bible.. - adam & eve were perfect and they sinned with a perfect mind & body.. - all mankind that has lived since adam & eve have been imperfect, none have had the ability to resist sin, nor have they had the ability to see or understant absolute truth that can only originate from god.. - if imperfect humans were judged, while still imperfect, one could reason that adam & eve had been given a better chance at life then what the rest of humanity was given.. - 1 john 4:8,9.
- 1 timothy 2:6. armageddon.

Objectivetruth,
Read the so-called gnostic gospels. They are short. Ask yourself why they are heresies. ask yourself why the teachings of Jesus took a second place to having to believe a resurrection saves.
I have other readings but this is pertinent--for me.
Sorry, gotta go--look forward to your comments.

You have a very limited pool of facts to draw from in the bible--That is if we share the same definition of the word "fact".
What "fact" can you present that Armageddon and the 1,000 year reign are even from Jesus or his Father? Without any facts to support this subject---what does it matter about other bible "facts"?
Objectivetruth, when some of us left the JWs we often learned of the distortion and lies of religion. We are wary of accepting cock-and-bull stories. Also the long accretions of control that becomes imbedded in the "so-called knowledge" of men--Oh, not just men--HOLY men makes your "simple" understanding sound like just another chaotic theological puzzle. The problem with these puzzles is there get to be only claims from a select few to interpret them properly.
Show me facts first.
