  What you have posted is exactly what I am saying...........low self esteem is a huge problem to society.........neglect and abuse of kids creates adults with no sense of their own worth, the effects are obvious and huge.

  What I call Twaddle is this yoyo of meaning and subject matter that Terry pontificates about in this thread, all loosely based around a 'false sense of self esteem'.........now wait a minute I mean Politcal Correctness..............no actually I did mean a false sense of self esteem........ and the 'DESTROYING of society' that this results in. I think the term 'DESTROYING society' is way to dramatic and is actually false itself.

  I agree political correctness is a pain in the arse............and I have a term for the people who promote this 'Yoghurt Knitters' (kinda similar to Do Gooders at all costs).

  But on this occasion (and its rare) I think Terrys argument and reasoning is there to be shot at!

  I get the point of these articles and I agree, praise for your kids needs to be true and sincere........it can though be based on knowing your child has made the best effort they are capable of which may or may not mean they produce the best result in class or something. My nephew is dyslexic, he has additional lessons (out of class) to help him with this, before this was identified he really struggled to keep up with the other kids in class but at 12 he has a fantastic mind when it comes to all things mechanical. He understands how an engine works and he can fix and repair things that would leave the rest of us standing (his dad has spent a lot of time teaching him this stuff). So when does he deserve praise................. when he trys his socks off in a piece of written work for school and gets a grade c or b, compared to the kids with natural ability in this area who breeze a grade a or when he fixes your fan belt on your car?

  I understand what it is you are saying, but I guess I see it from the other side of the fence.............because there are plenty of people with unrecognised, unpraised ability and talent that suffer with low self esteem because they never were praised or encouraged and that to me does not seem right either.

  I think you are confusing self esteem with intelligence or genius in a certain sphere.

  Self esteem is how one feels about themselves regardless of disability, intelligence or iq.

  People who have the relevant skills and intelligence to become doctors will become doctors.............people that dont wont.

  People who have self esteem recognise there value whether they are a parent, postman or doctor. They feel good about their contribution. They feel happy and know they have the right to feel as happy and fulfilled as the next person.

  You talk about people being 'blind' to differences and pretending that one person is equal to another...............I dont see that in our society...............to put it bluntly, thick people dont qualify to go onto further education to become doctors, lawyers, vets etc........they lack the capability.........society has in place a system where you have to qualify to wield te surgeons knife so to speak. The wheel chair bound person does not expect to be playing for Manchester United.

  But can those people who wont gain entry to university or make it onto the football team contribute to society? Can they lead fulfilled lives? Can they be happy? Can they have a high level of self esteem?

  Where exactly do you see this 'false sense' of self esteem being encouraged?

  In my experience it is probably the other way round in that good self esteem is not encouraged and developed in people.

  I dont think telling someone with no legs, someone who has a severe disfigurment, who has dyslexia, who is blind, deaf or just plain stupid that they are okay is wrong..............I guess it depends on what you mean by okay..............I am sure that anyone of the above is fully aware of the differences between themselves and those who do not suffer with same impediment.

  Are they okay............can they still love and be loved...............can they still work hard and achieve things.

  Should we cater for the needs of any of the above by providing parking that makes it easier for them to access the store......God forbid I dont mind the extra walk and I certainly dont begrudge disabled people the provision made for them.

  I undertsand the slight on political correctness but it concerns me more that its wrong for our kids to learn baa baa black sheep or for the teacher to use the black board.

  All should be encouraged whatever their personal circunstances..........encouragement and love should start with the parents..........self esteem is only about accepting and valuing oneself, no matter what your circumstances.................and being productive and acheiving are only part of the equation.

  Big News or rumor!

  a friend just informed me that the c/o in his hall will be instructing the elders that anyone with a child in college will be stripped of privileges in the hall.

  i am not sure if this is true this is just what i was told.

  it could be that it is only a campaign directed at him as he has some ties to ex-jw's and some how got found out.

  If this big news or rumour proves to have any credibility.......................I am personally going to write an article dishing all such dirt on the jw organisation and got to every major tabloid in this country with this story.

  It stinks.................people's lives go down the pan for this religion and people should be aware of what they are getting involved in when those 'meek' people knock on their doors.

  Brilliant book on Brainwashing

  i recently finished the book brainwashing - the science of thought control by kathleen taylor (oxford university press inc., new york, 2004).

  this presents an excellent summary of current research into the biology and psychology of the brain and identifies how organizations use this for the purposes of control.

  it discusses well known research such as by lifton and festinger, but also goes into a lot of scientific research into the biology of the brain.

  When you think of the illustration of the river and water passing down it, it is worthwhile considering that this same process applies to all thoughts in our minds............this can benefit us if we can examine and master the thought process..............people with low self esteem can examine the thoughts that enable them to under value their worth and replace such negative thoughts with ones that will build self esteem and a sense of worth.

  As for the watchtower organisation...........I have long chuckled at the way in which we all happily accepted the 'answer from the paragraph' approach they have to study...............they literally had us brainwashing ourselves. We tell you what to think and then we get you to repeat it parrot like to yourself. Amazing that we were all sucked in!!!! And thank God we woke up to it!
