something no one ever seems to mention is vocational school - I never went to college, in fact turned down a really good scholarship. Although if the truth is told, I turned it down as much out of extreme boredom as I did because I was told to. Between meetings and school I was bored out of my mind and the thought of spending time in a classroom was enough to make me scream. However -- eventually I went to a trade school to learn a skill that would earn me more than minimum wage. I loved it, was successful, eventually became a teacher in the school I attended, and now I own and have been operating for 15 years my own trade school. I feel I do a real service in the world, because most of our students are middle-aged women with no skills trying to enter the work force or improve their skills, and when they finish our course, they are able to earn much more than minimum wage. So in the end, I no longer regret missing college, I was so lucky to go to a trade school and learn a useful skill. So, college isn't necessarily the only answer - learn a useful skill that is needed and get out there and make $$$.

I don't know your sister, so don't know how accurate the letter is. Not my business, anyway. I don't have any problem with calling a spade a spade - if your sister is greedy and materialistic but feels righteous because she can shun you, well, it doesn't hurt to point it out to her. Just don't expect anything good to come from it - it's hard to be humble enough to hear criticism and accept it, especially if it comes from someone so obviously "wicked" that they have to be shunned. Personally, I write lots of letters I don't send, it allows me to vent and to organize my thoughts, and quite often I am satisfied with understanding my feelings and expressing them and I don't have to engage in pointless debate with someone who isn't going to be able to hear me, anyway. Also keeps me from making a real ass of myself now and then, when I read over something particularly nasty and spiteful and decide that it might be the course of wisdom to let it go...

my favorite is the pitukupf in james Doss's mysteries set on the Ute reservation. The pitukupf is a mythical creature that was an oracle to shamans - and James Doss writes really good mysteries with more fun in them than Tony Hillerman, who takes himself rather seriously.

Views of worldy folk as a witness
by fifi40 ini bring this subject up because personally i dont get it.. i have noticed that some posters use words such as 'evil' or 'stinking goats' to describe the view (either their own adopted view or that of the jw org) they had of worldly people whilst a jehovahs witness.. the reason i find this difficult to understand is because i never felt that way toward 'people of the world' whislt being a believer of of the teachings of the jw organisation.
and i didnt pick up on it being rammed down my throat by the org either.
now i wonder if i was ignorant of something, not paying enough attention or if it is just each individuals approach toward life that makes the difference.. what were your views of 'people of the world and why?.

i remember that non-believers were called goats and there was a lot of lick-lipping about the destruction of the wicked. There was a schizophrenic kind of thing, though, in that the JWs I knew, at least, could be friendly and pleasant to/about individual non-believers, while at the same time saying pretty horrific things about them as a group. One of the shocking things I still remember was a discussion from the platform about why Jehovah would kill children as well as their parents at armageddon. The speaker said that baby rattlesnakes were still rattlesnakes, and if you came across one you'd kill it whether it was a baby or an adult. I still can't believe that supposedly loving people would say and believe something like that. I remember a friend telling me about her father, a life-long JW, who at the end of his life said that no one liked him because he was going to live forever and they weren't. Same sort of smug arrogance as a lot of christian bumperstickers that essentially say "neener neener I'm saved and you aren't." And yet, I can remember some compassionate, loving JWs - but they went along with the belief that god is going to destroy 99% of the world and that they are the only ones who will be saved, and they felt OK with the idea that they would see the destruction of nearly everyone on earth in front of their own eyes.

"who knew that 640 kb of RAM would never be enough" That is also very funny - my first computer was a 256 and I paid $2K for it and thought it a bargain. It also had windows before "windows" was ever heard of - don't remember what kind of operating system it was. guess I was being a hothead - sorry! I didn't see that the original post pointed to another discussion, went back and checked, in fact, but still couldn't see that it was pointing to another discussion. I guess I am missing something.

why is it skeptics are "arrogant" and christians are "sincere?" I calls em as I sees em. I've had enough preaching to last several lives, and don't want to hear any more of it. Discussion means everyone gets to chip in and say something. Freedom of speech means other people get to say things we may not want to hear, BUT we don't have to listen if we don't want to. But preaching is shoving dogmatism down other people's throats and expecting them to just simply agree without pointing out any flaws or expressing any doubts or citing any contrary evidence. I like this forum for the most part, I am probably a little more skeptical and pissed off than most but I try to behave.

laughed until I cried - so funny! My husband frequently tells about the time when we were newly married and I tried waxing my own armpits, he came into the bedroom to find me sitting stark naked with an icepack under each armpit - he laughed until he cried that time. I've never tried waxing my pits since then - let em grow, let em grow.

no such thing as demons and no such thing as jehovah so it doesn't matter a whole lot except maybe to anthropologists. Saw a wonderful bumper sticker today - "who would Jesus bomb?"

in the people's republic of china, a very repressive government, they have the "grandmother" system. In each block some old lady has the job of spying on everyone and turning them in, even going so far as doing things like checking someone's birth control pills to see if she is taking them. an ugly society where they all spy on each other, because if they don't they'll get in trouble. See the resemblance? Repressive government, repressive religion using fear and making people spy on each other as part of the control system. When I went to China for the first time, our translator kindly took one of our group to a store to buy something he needed. In the translation process and changing money between "people's money" and foreign exchange certificates, she made a mistake of about two cents. When we got back to the hospital, she was called on the carpet and condemned for cheating a foreigner - someone had turned her in to her work unit before we even got back there! JWs are just as crazy and just as much control freaks and just as evil as the Chinese government.
