Whether it's the Great Smokies or the Cascades it's better to see any mountains then another house. My wife and I spent over a year looking at view property and it was frustrating at times but we did not give up. We decided to look in another more remote county and had nine listings to chase down on one Saturday. The third piece we looked at grabbed us right away. Wihtin ten minutes we knew this was the place to build.
The property has been listed for six years at $36k with no offers so we offered $34k and got it. We got our 4 bed. 2 bath house built for $68 which included having a 100' well drilled.
For anyone that wants to get out of the rat race and have some breathing room it's not as expensive as you may think. If the area does not have alot of people then it's usually affordable.
One of the downsides is we do have alot of power outages and sometimes it take a while for them to be fixed. We use a wood stove for heat and have a 6.5KW generator for backup power so it is not to inconvenient. My wife is having some health issues and all of the diagnostics and specialists are 30-40 miles away which can be a real pain sometimes.
If it's your dream to live in the hills or country it can be done and I can say it's 100% worth it. The silence out here is deafening and the stars on a clear night are incredible.
Make it happen!
