I've been a Julia Sweeney fan a long time. Since the SNL days of 'Pat'. I love her humorous take on difficult life issues and even tragedies. Watch her monologe on her brother's cancer. The Letting go of God piece is moving and funny. She put into words many things I had thought of but to afraid to openly state. Holy Smokes, is that Lighting I see coming at me? I'm not saying I believe or do not believe in a god or God. At this point I don't know much except I do not ever want to be afraid of my religion again. Julia helped me realize the god I know would never condem me for asking questions.

The Princess Bride Didn't see that on anyone's list. One of the BEST. Do some consider it not a comedy??? Someone put in Cockoo Nest and I kind of don't think of that as a comedy.
Waking Ned Devin, if you've missed this, you need to get it asap. All that great dry humor. 'how about some of those expensive friuty soaps'
This is really fun. I should start another thread but.....has anyone seen 8 1/2 ? No, not a comedy, i knowww. I have it coming from Netflix.

oh yes, I was told the Dinosaur bones were fake and from the Devil. All that carbon dating was set up by Satan. I loved reading about dinosaurs so this broke my heart. We went to the LA museum of Natural History and those Big Bones, a real....er.....FAKE dinosaur. I told all the kids in school they were fake and my teacher was upset and gave me a bad grade. I proceded to go all through school believeing everything the science teachers taught were Lies! Never did pass biology becasue I refused to believe evolution.....oh the shame

Some years back when the internet was first getting started I was on a email list of "JW Friends, Things to Share" or something like that. We got all kinds of sicky sweet notes and lots of 'experiences'
One was about a young women studing with JW and her father was extremely opposed and also in the Mafia. He threatened her to stop going to meetings and study but she did not so he cut off one of her fingers. She continued to study and eventually he cut off several fingers before he saw the LIGHT. Somehow he began looking into the literature himself and low and behold he turned around his life and became a witless....er....witness. And the story goes this was an experience given at an assembly and the father and daughter were introduced to the audiance with the women holding up her fingerless hand.
Now I live in a small town so everybody got this same 'experience' and all talked about it. One young handycapped sister even cried when she read it and talked to me about it. I was so angry that I did some writing to the moderator of the JW Friends site and ragged on her to STOP with the baloney.
Another story went that a JW was invited to the White House as part of a school event and 'slipped' a Live Forever book to Pres Clinton. The secret service caught this but they backed off because they could see this literature could change the world.....er....yadda yadda....something about angels in there too.
OMG!!!!! the majority of Dubs believe the stuff, that's the part that really scares me.

My dad always named all our cats DC - Damn Cat. He loved cats but sometimes it was a 'love / hate' relationship.
We love our kitty, Sushi, with all the kids grown we had an empty nest until she came along. She gets into every cubbyhole and places she could be harmed, including the fridge. Thank goodness she has a loud siamese meow. The only time I get annoyed is when she sleeps on my sweaters and leaves fur on everything.

I am....er Was, 3rd gen. My grandfather heard the 'Millions now living' talk and signed up that very day. My mother married a non-beliver but she raised 4 kids as JW. I was the only one to stay IN and raised my 4 children as Dubs.....Oh the Shame I feel. Only 1 son is still IN and an elder, yikes that hurts. He will not have children so hopefully the 4th gen will end with him.
My mother 89, does not know I am OUT as she lives in another state but I said to her to other day 'how about the 'millions now living will never die' talk that grandpa heard, do you think he would have become a witness if that promise had not hooked him? She did not really have an answer, just something about 'new light' and I dropped the subject but it does give her something to think about. That is when she is awake, 89 = lots of naps.

Dominican Republic- Does Anyone Live There ?
by gumby inhey folks, i want to know if anybody from here lives there or has lived there.

I know a couple, JW Missionaries living there. They come home to the US every few years. I really do not keep in contact with them these days but they always said the Dominican is beautiful and a great vacation bargin. This was a few years back but they said you could rent a beach house for under $50 a day, with a housekeeper. In my younger more adventurous days I would have thought nothing of testing the waters in a 3rd world country. I did my share of travel, but now, hum.....I need a little more security and comfort that the developed world offers.
As others have said, if you can handle the lack of 911 available 24/7 and 'don't drink the water' I think the Dominican would be a fabulous place to explore. Just be aware and 'A-LERT' because as we know the world needs more 'Lerts' (very old joke-I couldn't help myself)

For Those That Married JW, Did You Have Sex Before Your Wedding?
by Good Girl or Bad Girl? ini'm sure this has been covered before.
i'm wondering, though, how many who got married as a jehovah's witness actually waited for their wedding day?
it's for a "good cause," namely my peace of mind.

ditto of Seeker......Yes and No.....this was 69 so we did EVERYTHING but the Big One. I was a little teeny bit guily but got over it and never told anyone. Some years later when we were missing a few meetings and elder came over to investigate and asked all about our pre-marriage. He said 'maybe Jehovah is witholding his spirit because you are guilty of something. He may even hold back his spirit from the whole congergation becasue of you! AS IF! Even though I was young and a koolaid drinker at the time, I didn't fall for that over-rightous baloney. We did start back to meeting and became very stong but never Nazi-witness's.
I do know many many young couples at the time did 'Do It' Some were reproved and not much else, some were DF'd years later when it came out. I was very subjective. Depended on how well connected you were to the Boys Club---JC.

I also remember the Truth Book illustration, would you wear a gun if your mother was murdered with one? I used that one on Bible students to get them to give up there gold cross jewerly. One of my girls had a cross from her grandmother and I got her to toss it. Sooo Sorry Melissa. Now I know better so I do better.
