I love the recent all star wars episode! My favorite is the Emperor taking the call from Darth Vader after the first Death Star is blown up "by a bunch of teenagers." lol
my non-jw son just called from another state.
i asked him if he's attending any fireworks display tomorrow in observance of our nation's birthday.
he laughed, knowing that i was digging the lack of birthday celebrations amongst jw's.
I remember when we were studying, the couple studying with us invited us to go watch the fireworks. And we did, but I was thinking it was kind of weird.
Also, this same couple invited us later that year to go drive around with them and look at the Christmas light displays all around the town and countryside. We said no to that one. It was funny because the husband kind of chastised his wife after we told them no.
just reading frequent flyer miles on the subject of feeling guilty for having a happy marriage with a non-jw.. in our congregation which i haven't attended for about a year, i can only think of two or three who seem to be happy.
of course, i don't know what happens behind closed doors, but i know of several who admit they are unhappy.
i wrote out a long list of couples who have divorced over the last 20 years--including three elders (one is on his second divorce).
I know of 6 couples who have happy marriages without having to think too hard about it. My wife and me (I'm technically still a witness)...we're still best friends after all these years. The couple we visited this past weekend. Two of their daugthers are in happy marriages. And two elders in my congregation. All of these couples have something in common--keeping things in a good balance and not letting the FDS doctrine be too strict in their lives. They all do more of a partnership than headship.

Anybody JW (and JW's are the majority of the readers of this study article) that raises "troubling" questions about Watchtower doctrine is not commended. They are treated as faithless or disrespectful toward Jehovah (i.e., the organization). They may even have been told as much by the elders, and may even be told to just shut up about it (have faith in Jehovah, wait on him, i.e. do NOTHING).
I actually attended this meeting. My first in a year or so. We went to our friends' house last weekend. They don't know the extent of my fading, but they do know I'm inactive yet don't care. They recognize my old congregation is the worst one in the area, and they know my reasons.
Anyway, my wife wrote up in the margin and showed me during the meeting while we were studying this paragraph, "Why ok to question God but not to question the elders for allowing injustice?" Wow...there is hope for her yet! She was only applying that to our own congregation, though. She has questioned the PO and another elder about the injustices, but she thinks she may be viewed as disrespectful. I think she did great to question things! And according to this article, it should be ok, right?

when i was a witness , like a lot of you, remember we'd all scramble around at the end of the month asking each other, ( or your book study conductor would remind you) to turn our time in for field ministry ?
They would just find another way to know who participates. A roll call or
attendance sheet being kept at each service meeting, for example, would
fulfill that very nicely. Or turning in a monthly participation sheet to the
bookstudy overlord without listing times, just dates. After all, field service
is mandatory for a "Christian" who wants to be in good standing, isn't it?
Then they'd have everyone meet up later for an after-service head count to
try to ensure everyone did go out in service. To quelch any idea of showing
up for the meetings without actually going out in service just to get their names
on the paper, they'd be sure to have monthly guilt trip parts talking about just that.
If there was absolutely no accounting of it at all, then field service would drop by 75%,
I would think. Just the eager beavers wanting to get ahead in the organization
would actually go...and those wanting to look down on others...and a couple
honest-but-stupid ones.

hi everyone, i never was baptized but studied for a very long time before i finally got my sanity back and realized that although the individual jws for the most part were good people and doing what they thought was right the org itself was total b.s.
anyway ive been lurking here off and on for a while and figured i would stop being lazy and register.
so hello, i enjoy everyones posts and hope to be around for a while!
Hurray for you to see it before you took the plunge. I wish so much now that I, too, had been smart like that.

did any of your prayers ever get answered while being a jw even if they where small maybe insignificant?
pesonnally i never really needed my prayers to be answered but one time while the co visited us i was going to work with him durining saturady service i get there at 0930 but service started at 0900. i felt i missed my chance to work with him and show i was commited and i wanted to asked him how i can reconcile the fact i did not believe that noah's flood existed globally with the way the society views it.
i left the kingdom hall pissed off thinking i fu*ked things up, so i kinda said to jah well i messed up gettin some clarity to to my quandry.
No, but I do remember one particular prayer being answered at a bowling alley long before I was a dub. I was with my church's youth group and hadn't bowled a strike yet. This was maybe my second time ever bowling, and I was really bad at it. The youth pastor had us all huddle in a group and said a prayer to give me a strike. (I know, how insignificant and frivelous was that?) Then my turn came up, and I did make a strike on that turn and the next. Honest. That was really weird.
From an objective point of view, I'd have to say that it is more power-of-suggestion/positive-thinking than some angel directing my hand as I participate in some pointless game. Coincidence? Beginner's luck? Maybe I just focused more because I felt the pressure was on after that embarassingly loud group prayer in front of all the customers?
Maybe when I die and get resurrected or go to heaven or wake up in whatever afterlife awaits, they'll replay my life and point to that occasion and tell me what was really happening then. Until then, who knows?

So the brother picked a very irresponsible sister for the interview, I see. She may have finished a 4-year degree, which is a notable achievement in itself, but she obviously didn't choose a realistic major that would give her "a real job." It looks like she didn't do her research into what kind of job she could expect from such a field as that until it was too late. Sounds like she got a bit lazy at the end of it and just settled on the too-much-time/financial excuses. It also appears she went for the partying. So, this is a very discouraging talk for those responsible people in the audience who may be looking at how to prepare for a successful future. They are using her example and suggesting to the several thousand in attendance that the default college experience will be just like that...overall financial failure, immoral situations, and waste of time.
So after that disappointing career choice and after her "immoral" (from a JW-standpoint) times in college, she settled for the JW faith which takes in depressed, self-loathing, self-conscious ones and makes them feel good about themselves by telling them they are special for believing the "truth." And now she is in a good enough standing to be used in an interview at a convention. I bet she feels so top-of-the-world right about now.
What a crazy, mixed up world they live in.
